The marble architecture leading down the sparkling passage becomes more articulate the further on it goes, from a few wavy lines to a full-on ocean mural, depicting many aquatic Pokemon. The odd sparkling light reflects off of all sides, despite any source nearby... that is soon changed, however, when the passage fans outward to a bright, noisy clearing.

The tunnel ends atop a set of stairs leading downward a meter, which itself leads to a marble platform carved into the wall on this side of the chamber. The platform is essentially a stone dock; the rest of the chamber, under the level of that dock, is filled with water. How far down cannot be discerned, but what is certain is that this place was once tall and majestic. The tips of massive stonework buildings peak out of the surface of the water, waves crashing softly against the masonry. The tops of lower buildings form platforms that can be traversed with hearty jumps. Just as well, some buildings poke out even taller, gaining a story of space above the water level.

Above the water, the chamber resonates a white-blue reflection of the deep. Lanterns are strung up instead of being bolted to the wall, and the far wall stretches upward at an angle to meet the back wall in a triangle formation. The chamber is actually quite large as far as forward-backward goes, but who knows how far down it goes?

The crown is just decor, but it's also quite shiny and sparkly. It would be worth something, if only Jones could get his hands on it.

(38) Barnaby sees very, very faint smoke in the distance, behind a tall pile of ice and snow.

Smoke?

Where there's smoke, there's fire! Barnaby heads straight for the location, wondering who or what could be starting a blaze in this sort of location, and if they needed help keeping warm.

Barnaby bounds toward the pile of ice, and finds the source of the fire easily. A peek over the small wall reveals something unexpected: there's a man in a torn-up black jumpsuit, stubble on his face, trying to start a fire... very unsuccessfully. The red R on his suit and the black beret gives two great big hints about his affiliation, but it looks a little big for him... or maybe he looks a little thin.

When he sees Barnaby, he jumps back and drops his sticks, failing to ignite the small amount of tinder he had smoking. He gets back on his knees, staring the Colonel in the face with terrified eyes. "You're not the guys from before... you gotta get me out of here!" His voice is raspy, and his speech is laced with horrid coughs.

That R... Barnaby recognized that R from somewhere...

That big red R is the telltale sign of Team Rocket, a criminal organization that seems similar to Kalos's own Team Flare... but for some reason, whenever it was brought up in conversation here, Team Rocket seemed like a laughingstock. This situation doesn't seem very funny.

A poacher. Nothing but a member of a scummy organization with nothing but ill will for all the creatures in this world. Barnaby would be better off leaving him to his own devices in the cold. Or better yet, letting his escorts deal with the intruder before he could cause more damage to their home. Either would likely be more than fitting.

But it wouldn't be right. Instead he sent out Clopperton, who used its fires to light the grunt's attempt at a fire.

"You're in no condition to escape on your own. Warm up for a while; this Ponyta will keep you warm in the cold."

Barnaby tossed the freezing grunt his safari coat, a warmer article than the torn suit, and sat down by the fire himself to regain some vigor from the swim. Whatever tortures this weather had done was more than enough of a punishment for his misdeeds. There would be no point to furthering that pain.

"I assume you are not on the explorer's list. Tell me, how did you end up on this frozen cove?"

Jones carefully pulls out the Ghost Gem that he'd found a couple of days ago. "Your majesty, I think you deserve a gem that's truly worth your while. I'd like to trade you this," and he shines the flashlight through the Ghost Gem, emphasizing the shine and mystique of the gem, "For the bauble that you're wearing now."

The Grunt, surprised, gratefully sidles up next to the Ponyta. "Th-Thank you... I came here with a few other Rockets, but we got separated. One of those explorers' Pokemon messed me up bad, and I couldn't get out..." He gulps, quickly donning the coat. "My legs are better now, but I can't make it out without getting arrested..." There's a timidness in his voice one wouldn't expect from a representative of a criminal organization.

"I just wanted a quick buck.... no one really wants to join the Rockets, they just want the quick money. But now I'm stuck here, waiting to die..." His stomach growls loudly as he speaks. "If I even try to get out, they'll catch me and put me in jail... I didn't want this!" He sounds truly remorseful.

The lord Kingler's beady eyes widen at the gem. The Krabby surrounding him try running for it immediately, but a quick succession of grunts stops them from advancing on Jones.

After a few moments of internal deliberation, the Kingler approaches Jones, and lays its big claw down in front of him, the Krabby clearing away. All the Pokemon stare at Jones, looking like they're expecting him to do something. Is this a challenge? No one seems hostile here, even now...

"If I help you, you need to make a promise. This pokemon provided you warmth. These ice pokemon will help find your way back to the entrance. There are many creatures like these who can provide good to those kind enough to reach for them."

"The poaching buisness stops now. You will take a stop by the local monks and apologize for what was done in these ruins, then you will return home with the help they will provide you from the kindness of their hearts."

Barnaby knew this grunt wasn't going anywhere with his current attire, so a new one would have to do. So a plan, to craft the grunt a disguise to escape with. Clopperton would burn all of the Rocket jumpsuit, save for a section of the pants to look like makeshift shorts. The professor then offered his undershirt and belt, with Smeargle staining the various black pieces into red. To top it all off, Barnaby would lend the crook his safari hat to cover the lad's face in shadows, keeping the witnesses to a minimum.

And after a few finishing touches here and there....

"Chin up, keep a smile on your face at all times. You are Dusty Jones, the archaeologist and spelunker that arrived late yesterday evening. Pull the act, walk straight out of the foyer, leave my hat somewhere outside, then dissapear without a trace. Your escape now depends on how good your acting is."

Jones gingerly places the gem into the claw, and looks at the Kingler expectantly.
