The marble architecture leading down the sparkling passage becomes more articulate the further on it goes, from a few wavy lines to a full-on ocean mural, depicting many aquatic Pokemon. The odd sparkling light reflects off of all sides, despite any source nearby... that is soon changed, however, when the passage fans outward to a bright, noisy clearing.

The tunnel ends atop a set of stairs leading downward a meter, which itself leads to a marble platform carved into the wall on this side of the chamber. The platform is essentially a stone dock; the rest of the chamber, under the level of that dock, is filled with water. How far down cannot be discerned, but what is certain is that this place was once tall and majestic. The tips of massive stonework buildings peak out of the surface of the water, waves crashing softly against the masonry. The tops of lower buildings form platforms that can be traversed with hearty jumps. Just as well, some buildings poke out even taller, gaining a story of space above the water level.

Above the water, the chamber resonates a white-blue reflection of the deep. Lanterns are strung up instead of being bolted to the wall, and the far wall stretches upward at an angle to meet the back wall in a triangle formation. The chamber is actually quite large as far as forward-backward goes, but who knows how far down it goes?

Easy enough to fix that as well! Barnaby bags the toolkit and takes the ladder back downstairs to the rotted carpet; a probable sign of structural weakness. The way he figured, there were still a couple more floors to this tower, assuming he could break through the floor. If he could find a particularly fragile spot, a Stomp from Stagstrong, or a Bulldoze from Dustermuch could easily make a new passage to the lower levels.

Barnaby finds himself a bare portion of floor; try as he might, though, the floor is thick concrete or stone or something. A Stomp wouldn't be enough to break through, despite it being fairly worn.

The colonel suddenly hears a pouring of something from outside the room he's in... water?

Barnaby recalls his pokemon and takes a look utside the window, preparing to exit the passage regardless. This building's a dead end; he'd have to try another.

The ladder would make for a good makeshift scaffold; he attempts to use it as a bridge between the window and outside ledges.

Barnaby is able to cross with the new ladder. Good show! He's back on the center platform.

The water does seem to be filling up a little bit... but he can't tell where the new water is coming from.

Hmm... clearly the water is coming from.........

A place of no concern! Realizing his window of opportunity is slowly leaving him, Barnaby crosses the pillars back to where he started. With his ladder in hand, the pillared path down to the base floor seemed more than tacklable.

He remembers briefly one of the others mentioning a frozen bay near the back of the area. With the water rising his ability to bring fire towards it was quickly going away! This might be his only chance to break ground where no explorer had gone before!

It's not anywhere close... but out the corner of his eye, between two buildings, Barnaby spots some kind of white sheet far at the back of the chamber. It's a hearty swim away, that's for sure.

Hmm! The water might be rising, but perhaps the temporary drainage might have shifted the ice to be more fragile. Still worth a look!

Barnaby recalled the rest of is group and send out Rippleweave to act as his swimming buddy. The two of them would take a dive off the pillar towards the icy sheet, and hopefully warm up once they got there.

Taking no damage from the dive, the two set off toward the ice pillar. The water is cool, but not overwhelmingly chilly.

(39)

A small shadow darts in front of Barnaby in the rising water, quickly out of his path.

Barnaby continues swimming down the path; without gills, goggles, or general fish parts he was dead in the water. Instead, he leaves investigation of the shadow to Rippleweave, whom he gives orders to dive below the surface and take a peek.

Hopefully the water wouldn't get too chilly.

Arriving in the Grotto, Jones takes another look around, trying to see if there's been a rise in the water levels, and to see if there's any other activity happening.
