That's certainly an option.

OR, you could realize that apricorns are plants that just happened to have the proper qualities as a result of skilled crafting hands.

In the end, it's the GM's call.

Fair enough.
I handle it via Tech rolls for mechanical construction, Petrology rolls for magic crystals, and Occult rolls for alchemy.
Just thought it would be cool if a fantasy splatbook had the final word on some of the unknown elements.

Honestly as a Player and particularly as a GM I HATE it when books say this is how it goes. While yes I can and probably will overwrite it with my own fluff there is always that one person that goes, "But this is what the book says" and I really don't need any assault and battery charges.

but playing devils advocate here this is a splat book its purpose can be seen as being a book that clearly expands upon and lays out a subject to reduce workload those who don't want things layed out for them could then just keep to the core rule book

My players are particularly tolerable when it comes to things like this. Rule 0 is the first rule they ever learned, and they never give me any trouble.

But the point of the splat among other things is to give you that fluff. Otherwise, why make it in the first place?

Meh, while it is called the Fantasy Splat, it should be more accurately be called the Medieval Fantasy Splat which covers the whole regime from low/no magic to high magic. Defining certain things like that would run into the exact same issues that defining fluff for certain aspects for core do (ie TMs/HMs, and even moves to some extent)

And honestly when I get a splat unless it is advertised as a fluff splat I am looking for hard rules, not fluff. I want new classes, mechanics, setting ideas, plot hooks, not fluff. (and yes I realize that some of you might put some of those things in the fluff category, I however do not)

In short I view splat books as a ignition point, not a finalized product. If I wanted a finished product I'd hunt down a setting book.

Then why have other things fluffed?

If you ask me a splat book that covers a genre(like fantasy or scifi)should basically help make the act of making a setting easier. for example back to the pokeballs the splat could give examples of fluff detailing how low, medium, and high magic/fantasy balls could work and then lay down hard rules for what the ramifications of balls working like this are. kinda like how there are separate example rules for tm discs vs. tm syringes depending on setting/taste in the core rulebook. this way a gm making a setting can choose his mechanic alacarte without pulling everything out of his hammer space and with little fear of of these setting specific mechanics being broken because they would have been playtested and peer reviewed before being published.
