Mega's are officially in-battle transformations caused by a certain item. It *appears* in the video to proc on certain attacks, but I think it's just as likely to be a 'low HP' transformation item.
Hm, interesting. Sturdy mons will like this, as will Substitute.

I doubt it's a low-HP item; I feel like it'd be something that could be activated anytime in battle. It'd be stupid if Lucario gets critical-hit and is down to red and suddenly transforms only to be KO'ed next turn because it's only got, like, 3 HP left. That'd kinda kill the epicness that the Mega forms are supposed to give off.

Random side note here. I'm currently playing through pokemon white for the first time. I noticed that on route eleven (east of the dragon gym city which opens after beating the main storyline) there were two backpackers who spoke French. In the Japanese version, one speaks English while the other speaks French. Backpackers, people who travel the world, are speaking the language of France, the location of generation six. It would make sense that these backpackers come from the new region. Foreshadowing anybody?

The low HP thing was purely my own speculation to what I think they might do, no indication from gamefreak towards that =P
it will be interesting how its implemented.

cosmic, that could be brilliant, if the dates for white release and the dates of research coincided. or it could be coincidence. any data on it? i'm interested to know if there is date correlation.

No data Balin. It was just something I noticed when doing the run of White that caused a brainwave. I verified on Serebii, but I haven't gone any further than that. What do you mean by dates of research?

Given that several other trainers in the game spoke other languages such as German, Spanish and Italian, it seems more coincidental.

By dates of research i ment the dates that game freak designers were in france doing research and if that happened to be before white and black were released

Well I've heard somewhere (I honestly can't remember) that Black and White, Heart Gold and Soul Silver, and Platinum where all in development at the same time (if at different stages). While Platinum was in the final stages, getting ready to be finalized and shipped out, HGSS was in the middle of development, while a team came to the US and worked with Nintendo of America, doing the research for BW.

DP came out in Japan in 2006, Platinum in Japan in 2008. HGSS in 2009 and finally BW in 2010. The release date of XY is this October, of 2013. Given that BW research started somewhere around mid-to late 2008, 2 years before its release, XY research could have been started around 2011, after BW's release. However, that is not to say it is impossible, they already demonstrated XY was developed differently from the rest, with the universal worldwide release.

I am landing on the side of coincidence, because there are several trainers who speak several languages in BW besides the native of your game.
