The problem with talonflame is the n to f transition. You go from a closed n sound to needing to drop your tongue and jaw for the f. It's just awkward.

I actually really disliked talonflame's name when I first read it as well, but when someone pointed out the "inflame" bit on gamefaqs, it made it better. I mean, I was pronouncing it literally as "talon-flame," which does sound dumb. But if you say the word "inflame," you don't really have that n/f awkwardness, because inflame actually is a word most people are used to.

For me at least, if you pronounce it as "tal-inflame," thus making the n sound like an n in the middle of a word, rather than at the end of a word, it sounds infinitely better. It probably would have helped if they'd spelled it "talinflame," but then it looks kind of funny to me... Which I'm assuming is why they went with the o instead.

Hm, pronouncing it that way, it sounds a lot better. I'm slightly disappointed with it stylistically, which is a shame as I have a fondness for Fletchling and several other birds, and love the species that Talonflame is based on. Might just be that the first picture I saw was poor quality. I'm quietly hoping for a third form.

I'm personally betting on some form of mini-phoenix form for the third form. Unless Talonflame is actually its final evolution...

Flarrow doesnt work, as it would be a pun on flame-sparrow...and it's not a sparrow. And there is no reason to make a pun on (or even have the word) 'arrow'.

Flarawk isn't a pun at all, but at least it makes sense for the pokemon. I can't say I liked it any better than Talonflame even when I thought it was a mishmashed word as well, but in the end I'd prefer wordplay over ease of pronunciation to be honest.

I will agree that I hope it has a third form. Right now it's kind of underwhelming for a final-stage.

flame + arrow = flarrow or some other spelling of it and is such a better name.
flame + hawk = flarawk again so much better
and both are combinations of two words, that's not my issue with the name.

talonflame does not sound good to my ears when I say it out loud. saying it make me feel like I am saying something difficult to say. almost like it needs to be practiced for a presentation or something. it is an uneven and jarring name.

but each to their own opinion
... do you seriously think Flarrow or Flarawk is a good name for a pokemon? The first is absolutely horrid to say out loud and the second one is just plain awkward.

I find it very peculiar that you and I seem to have opposite opinions of the euphonics of talonflame and the ones you just stated.

However, as you said, to each their own.

We might differ euphonically because we have different accents from ogher parts of the country. Or we might have taken different languages in highschool. Who knows

I thought people already knew Talonflame's Japanese name is Faiarō. Unless you guys are talking about a potential "middle evolution" for Fletchling.

Bird feathers are sometimes used in the fletchings of arrows.

There is your reason.
