Three counter-points. One, I'm the GM, so keeping info away from the players wouldn't be looked well upon, two, he honestly didn't think that it would KO the Absol, and three, how was I supposed to keep it secret? All the radar showed was a fast-moving ground-bound pokemon. It can't detect type or level, and the party wasn't about to split intentionally (Aside from the Psychic, who managed to talk one of the three Spoink we encountered into coming with him with help from his Ralts after spotting one of them bouncing above the bushes and going after it).
1 counter point to those counter points, based on knowledge that I have which is not 100% so what actually goes down would be different depending on the circumstances.

Unless the entire party is looking at the radar when the figure appears or it has an alarm system on it, only the one holding the radar would know about it is the holder of the radar, which I would figure would be the Capture Specialist himself. You could pass him a note with what HE sees on the radar and then it would then be up to HIM who to tell and who not to tell based on the information that you've given him. He could see the fast-moving Pokemon, determine it to be of value since it appears to be the only one capable of moving that swiftly compared to the rest, and choose who to tell about it for back-up is he deemed it necessary, or he could have held the MA back long enough to try again. Why wouldn't they think the fighter with the fighting type moves would knock out the Dark type Pokemon? Unless they've never encountered a Dark type, before, it should be relatively common knowledge, even off of a metagaming standpoint. They don't need to detect type or level, they just have to make solid judgements based on given facts on what's valuable and what's not. And you may be the GM, but you're SUPPOSED to keep some information from your players. Are you going to tell them about the Gengar lurking in their own shadows waiting to attack them? What about the evil villain planning on backstabbing them? If you're players have problems with that, then they should play more tabletop games.

Again, I do not have all information given to me. This is my response to the information I have been given by you and how I have read that information.

To make the situation clearer, I've taken the Engineer class' "Mad Tinker" aspect to the limit. The Pokedex and the radar in it have both been incorporated into my mech arm, and the radar display is a 3D dome display that projects from the mech arm's palm.

Now that changes everything. I thought the radar was more along the lines of the Dragonball Radar from DBZ and was just a little screen that displayed everything. I had no idea it was a 3D projection. Ingenious!

It never says specifically what *type* of display it uses, so a lot of that was artistic license. But a 3D display is really the only way to tell if you're looking at an airborne pokemon, or a ground-bound one.

Lockdown, I respect that awesome invention for the radar. It's incredible. However, a simple flat screen can show differences with airborn enemies, ground enemies and below ground enemies. A simple colour coding fixes this. Red for ground. Yellow for airborn and blue for below ground. The Radar in games like Armored Core was like this and worked flawlessly.

A few days ago our team was being chased by a pissed exploud. Our team researcher turns around and starts whistling the tetris theme song, trying to calm it down. We were all shouting for him to get the hell out of there, but he keeps going. Then through some miraculous rolls, he succeeds in calming it down, and he then proceeds to capture it. I'm still shocked.

I once threw my pc's in a medeival-themed game against a pack of feral zorua...

they learned the hard way the difference between "feral" and "wild". The shiny over-leveled pack leader was quite memorable.

Last session in my current game, had the guys run into a former classmate at the Rustboro Pokemon Academy in town after healing up their pokemon. Sad classmate is a rich daddy-boy douche, who has just had one of his pokemon stolen by some guy in a hoodie (implied to be a Snagger). He sees my character, who he hates, and accuses him of being the thief.

Naturally, the rest of the party deny it, but the cop he was talking to said that at the moment my character's mecha arm was some decent circumstantial evidence, so he'd need more than just their word. Cue one of the party telling him that I'd caught a pokemon earlier. Cop checks the pokedex, compares the timestamp of the capture and then subsequent treatment of the pokemon at the pokemon center (I'm borrowing a concept from a fanfic author, Quill of Molliemon, that captured pokemon are "chipped" in order to keep them from being re-captured by unscrupulous trainers. Said chip also allows the govt to keep track of trainers relatively easily by when they last checked into which pokemon centers). Both timestamps confirm my innocence, cop leaves to do his job.

Douche, not satisfied with this outcome, challenges us to a match, two on one or mana-a-mano, he doesn't care. My character and another character, who iis a psychic, agree to the challenge, as we're his former classmates and bullying targets. He sends out two really rare pokemon, Aron and Cranidos. Both look like they've been dragged down thirty miles of bad road. And douche can't actually command both of them at once. I have a Treecko, Psychic has a Spoink, both level 7. Treecko leads off with an absorb, downs the Cranidos in one hit due to its weakened state. Spoink proceeds to make excellent use of the terrain, hopping into an upright pipe inches ahead of a mud slap. Our Breeder has gone after the cop, as the state the douche's pokemon are in is pretty much criminal.

While this is going on, the final party member that was officiating the match, a Martial Artist, catches sight of a figure that matches the thief's description. Tries to sneak up and clobber him. Failed his sneak test (Int+Dex), and was evaded handily. The Psychic managed to pick up a single thought from their head, a somewhat female voice going "That one is hasty, but he may be a good choice." The douche, in the meantime, has flipped his shit and is on the field yealling at his pokemon for being "stupid". Cop shows up, the douche is taken into custody, and it's implied that the Aron may be turned over to the Breeder if he can get through a vetting process after the mon has had some time to heal. The cranidos is going to a lab or a preserve for study and breeding, no ifs, ands, or buts. Douche is led away crying about how daddy won't let this stand. Cue curtain call, right?

Not quite. Our Martial Artist hears a pointed cough behind him. It's the thief, who not only thanks us for stepping in, but offers our Martial Artist the chance to train the pokemon he'd Snagged. And yes, the voice is most definitely male. A Riolu. When pressed as to why, the reasoning they got back was "He would not do well under me. His nature and mine are... not aligned well." The Martial Artist accepts, and the Snagger(?) snaps the pokeball that the Riolu had been in in half, to allow for capture.

Cue the Psychic trying to use Extrasensory on the thief. And having it accomplish nothing. The stranger nods, says "I'll see you again" and drops a Smoke Ball. And then vanishing when the smoke cloud clears. Cue curtain.
