The last time I went fishing? Disrupted an entire Poliwag family, causing a Poliwrath to fling my Capture Specialist a good distance across Cinnabar Island. |

GM asks if it's OK to smoke. Host and other players say it's fine. GM brings out a baggie of weed. |

Yeah, after living in Cali for a few years, I learned that when people asked if it was okay to smoke, I had to make sure they clarified *what* they were wishing to smoke. |

Why do I not remember this?
As I currently live in Cali myself, I would like to point out that is a very good idea to ask about it. |

I couldn't help but laugh over this bit of mechanical nonsense. So, we're facing down a Mewtwo in our finale tomorrow, which is, as we know, a special-attacking Psychic Legendary. Now, the GM ruled that we could tutor in some moves that show up later in the movesets. I was planning on bringing my Shuckle into this final battle rather than my Machoke (because, really, that's like bringing a stick to a gunfight). I discovered that Shuckles have the move Power Split in their movesets. (For those not privy to this, Power Split averages your ATK or SATK with the foes respective stat) Now, this particular Shuckle is stated for ATK rather than SATK. Specifically, this Shuckle's SATK is 1. So, in other words, I accidentally found a way to halve the SATK of a Mewtwo. |

Mix in that you can then swap your Attack and Defense, and you have a god killer. An SE Bug Bite on him off of Shuckle's massive defense would hurt a lot, and it can still tank his Special Attack. |

My players had just arrived in Mauville. Two of them, Ace/Chaser and Mystic/Shaman, decide to go to the Game Corner. Right away they both start getting lucky, good die rolls, good poker hands, etc. After a good night of gaming they are practically rolling in coins. The Shaman had also attracted the attention of the local Game Corner Courtesan. The Courtesan goads them into the back room. They quickly find out the backroom has illegal pokemon fights being held. They are illegal as they are deathmatches. Killing is expected. Having a mon with Pursuit was preferred as you could kill the opponent when the trainer tried to return him. They decided 'Hey! Lets get in on a battle.' They were explained the rules. Trainers aren't allowed inside the cages. Killing your opponent nets you 10% of all bets placed on your match vs. a small static sum. I told them to roll a d100 each to deteremine the difficulty of their opponents. Lower equaled difficult opponents. Ace rolled a 9 and Shaman rolled a 5. I decided with such amazingly low rolls, they are fighting the reigning tag-team champs who decided to go into the singles lineup. The battles would be 1v1. I asked them which mons they'd be using. The Ace chose his starter, a level 19 Sneasel and the Shaman chose his freshly caught but awesome level 15 Elekid (it had Ice Punch Tutor and Rolling Kick Egg move prepackaged). Keeping this in mind, I made their opponents. The Trainers were equal level Aces, and their mon were 10 levels higher. The Ace went up against a Venasuar (underleveled at level 29), and the Shaman against a level 25 Scyther. I made these match ups for two reasons. First, to give them a fair shot. If they landed an SE move, there was a good chance of them getting an OHKO. The problem was that the Sneasel would be too far away to hit the Venasuar round one and the Scyther was faster than the Elekid. So both had to survive a round against much more powerful mon. Battles start. Sneasel moves forward slightly, uses Screech (and misses). Shaman possesses the Elekid, who had yet to be released after his very sudden capture (it was a Quick Ball catch). Scyther uses Quick Attack, trainer fearing the Elekid was actually faster (it wasn't). Drops the Shaman/Elekid down to 9 HP. From a Quick Attack. It is at this point I mention the Scyther had X-Scissor and could have easily killed the Elekid and by extension the Shaman as well with an X-Scissor. Venasaur responds with a Critical Hit Sleep Powder, things looking very bad for both PCs. Shaman responds to the Quick Attack with an Ice Punch. He rolls a 19. Scyther Frozen and into single digit HP (he rolled low damage). Much rejoicing, he finishes off the Scyther with a Shockwave, not wanting to risk missing. The Sneasel crit fails his first Sleep Check. Now here is where it gets interesting. The Ace's backstory has him as a huge hater of Snaggers. To the point where he will derail the entire plot to track down and destroy a single Snag Machine. I knew this and thought the party hadn't had something to shake them up in a while. So I set up this shady, backroom betting parlour to introduce a personal villain for the Ace. In my notes I put "Captain Marken (the Snagger's name) will attempt to Snag the winning mon of whichever match ends quickest." I had 8 other battles going on and rolled randomly to see if any other ended quicker. None did. So guess what happens? Marken turns an Ultra Ball into a Snag ball and chucks it at the PC's Elekid. I will remind you the Shaman is still currently Possessing the Elekid and very low on HP. I roll, adding the Cap Spec modifiers. Get a -3. I. literally, just stole a PC. Marken makes a dash, the Shaman's opponent confused. Ace succeeds his Preception to notice the Snag Machine. Both the NPC opponents offer to help him retrieve his friends pokemon. Cue a chase scene through downtown Mauville. Ace is given a Tauros from his opponent to help him catch up, while the NPCs and teh Shaman's body (note: NPCs don't know why the Shaman is unconscious) on top of the Venasaur. The NPCs lag behind because that is far too much weight for the poor plant. During the chase, the Ace 'coincidentally' runs into the rest of the party one by one in a Scooby Doo like fashion. The Ace eventually closes the gap enough for his Joltik to get a Spider Web off if he can succeed a Threaded Shift to put him in range. Crit fail. Another PC (also an Ace), decides, screw this. Sends her Trapinch underground (through solid concrete), under Marken. One Bulldoze later, the battle starts, Marken releasing two (!) Gyarados. I will note at this point Marken is twice the level of the PCs and his team are all fully evolved (except one) and all level 25. The PCs strongest mon is a level 19 Sneasel. This was designed to be a tough fight. The Aces both engage Marken and his two Gyarados (one was a Zorua). The other PCs (Medic and Ninja) hang back trying to look like they aren't associated. Which fails as a quartet of Rangers show up behind them. Marken reveals he's a Captain in the Rangers and his 'repossession' of the Elekid was authorized. Anti-Snagger Ace gets (justifiably) pissed. Proceed with Battle, where the Gyarados dodges all attacks (I mean all. All attacks either had it in the AoE or were directed at him) for 3 rounds before taking any damage. Fast forward, PCs are getting their butts wooped (I made the encounter a bit too difficult). Wattson finally shows up, but is immediately shut down. Marken pulled rank on him. In my setting Rangers are funded by the League but technically separate. Through some stuff the PCs don't fully know yet, Marken out ranks any Gym Leader and threatened to arrest Wattson if he interfered. But, being cocky sunvabitch, Marken releases his newest capture to drive home how much authority he had and ordered it to attack Anti-Snagger Ace. But of course the Shaman is still in control of the Elekid and promptly Rolling Kick's him in the balls (no Flinch unfortunately). Marken gets pissed that the Elekid attacked him and tried to attack back with an Unarmed Arms Attack. Crit fail, auto-activating Static AND busting both is Snag Machine AND his Engineer arm. Init comes back around again, not a lot changing. The Gyara failed its Para roll, as did Marken and the rest of the PCs are Trapped and out of range of anything important. Shaman Ice Punches Marken, in the shins this time, dropping him into single digits. That is as far as the battle has gotten, but once the top of init comes, the Rangers are going to issue a retreat, with or without Marken's permission, dragging him with them if necessary. And all this because the PCs wanted some quick EXP and quick cash. |

I just started my official plot campaign yesterday. It involved my folks going to the Sinjoh Ruins due to weird dreams they've been having. They got locked in the cave, and then I took out my laptop, and played the Arceus Encounter music. Then I voiced Arceus ordering one of the trainers to fight him with their most precious pokémon (something I had required them to think of when they statted up) and proceeded to have Arceus murder their pokémon in front of them. They got better in the long run, but the looks on their faces were priceless. |
