I haven't seen a system for determining money paid out from trainers / situations yet (even a homebrew one like this), so I'm going to put this out there. I've used it once or twice, but I haven't had a chance to test it in a full long-term game or anything yet. Feel free to tell me about your money experiences or systems, or any other feedback!

Since the current prices are based on the item prices in the games, I figured I'd just work off of the payout system from the games; or, at least, how it's described in Bulbapedia page on payouts. I then modified it to be a little easier on human brains and calculators, mostly by going for multiples of 5 instead of multiples of 4.

The System:

  • First, you take the level of the Trainer's highest-level Pokemon that they used in the fight.
  • Then you find the Trainer's type, or an equivalent, in the chart below. Feel free to modify this based on the backstory of the particular trainer; you could totally have a Bugcatcher who happens to be really rich, for instance, or a Gentleman whose Pokemon simply aren't up to snuff.
  • Multiply the two, and you have the amount of money the Trainer gives to your heroes.

Trainer Payouts
Base CashTrainer Types
15Youngster, Bug Catcher
25Super Nerd, Roughneck
30Sailor, Hiker, Fisherman
40Policeman, Rancher, Reporter
50Engineer, Scientist, Teacher
75PokeManiac, Idol, Executive
100Linebacker, Boss, Veteran
125Gambler, Gym Leader, Elder
150Rich Boy, Lady, Interviewer
200Gentleman, Socialite, Champion

Example:
Youngster Joey's best (and only) Pokemon is his Rattata, at level 4. If you beat him, he'll give you (4 x 15 = 60) Pokedollars. If you then go and fight Falkner's Lv. 9 Pidgey and Lv. 13 Pidgeotto, he'll give you (13 x 125 = 1625) Pokedollars.

Notes / Caveats:
One thing to note is that since this is pulled from the games, it's meant mostly for relatively equal fights, where there are roughly about as many enemy Trainers as there are player-characters. If you ever have a situation where it's, say, the single Gym Leader somehow fighting all the PCs at once, you may want to multiply the money appropriately. Also, since the games have you fight a relatively large number of trainers, if your game doesn't feature many trainer fights for money, you may have to multiply this up further.

Again: Comments and feedback appreciated!

I typically have the trainers bet on their matches. I'll usually put a ceiling on how much cash certain types of NPCs have (I tend to categorize them similarly to what the table shows), and if the NPC cannot match the amount of cash the PC wants to bet on the match, they may offer items as collaterial or simply back out of the fight.

For example: A Youngster or Bug Catcher may only have $500-$1,000 in cash, but they may have some pokeballs and repels they could pony up as well, while a Rich Boy or Gentleman may have up to $10,000 in cash and some ultra balls if that isn't enough. So note that a PC could win 10k from a gentleman, but only if they have the same amount to bet on the match (or collaterial that the gentleman would accept).

Or they can just say "I only have 20p could we battle for that instead?"

usually we just use a simple system does the challenger look rich ,if yes bet 1000 for every 10 lvls your pokemon has (strongest pkmn only) , if no bet 100 for every 5 lvls your pkmn has (only strongest pkmn) and of course we can throw a few variables about age in there.

I have my player earn money from doing quests and such. Unless they choose to place a bet on the fight (whats illegal) they dont earn money for it.
However, later on, im going to let them appear on t.v shows that will pay them for their battles.
