Tools that I use; Here is what I use in my game

I've noticed recently that a lot of new members have been asking for help for GMing this great game. So, I'm putting a list of tools that I use here, most of which are from this site and all credit goes to their creators.

Pokemon Auto-Statter: Just plug in the base stats and the level, and it does the rest for you. Saves a lot of time for unprepared for encounters

Random Encounter Table: While this doesn't have any Gen V pokemon on it (yet), it makes random encounters easier. Just figure out the habitat your players are currently in, open said file, roll 1d100 to get a rarity category, roll appropriate dice afterwards to see what they found (or what found them).

Fishing Rules Because at some point someone wants to catch a magikarp in a swimming pool.

And finally here's something I made on my own, inspired by what a GM did in a PbP game I'm in. Random Item Search Rules:

Standard item search. Roll 1d20+wis mod (even if it's negative), if result is 13 or above, GM rolls 1d100. Result shows item found.
70-100= find some berries. 90-100= find one, 80-90= find two, 75-79 find three, 70-74= find 4
40-69= find some apricorns. 60-69= find one, 50-60= find two, 40-50= find three
30-39= find a potion. 36-39= find a potion, 35= super potion, 34= ether, 33= hyper potion, 32= elixer, 31 max potion, 30= full restore
20-29= find a staus ailment. 28-29= Awakening, 26-27= Paralyze Heal, 24-25= Ice Heal, 22-23= Burn Heal, 21= Antidote, 20= Full Heal
15-19= find a repel. 17-19= repel, 16= super repel, 15= max repel
10-14= find a pokeball. 13-14= pokeball, 11-12= great ball, 10= Random special ball (excluding ultra and master balls.)
8-9= find a tm
6-7= find a held item
4-5= find a vitamin
2-3= find an evolutionary item
1= find a fossil

Notice that any item that can be obtained with a feature is relatively difficult to find using these rules, but still possible (10%<). This keeps those features valuable, but now players won't be able to gripe about not being able to get the items without forking over a ton-o-cash.

For random encounters I use a similar rule for finding items (1d20+wis mod, must get 13 or above to find something) only you don't count the wis mod if it's negative.

I hope this helps new and current GM's. Please post any tools you use that you would like to share here. If there is already a thread for said tool, please post a link and a short description to it. If requested, I'll copy-paste your tool to the first post here.

Added items:
DM Autostat tool: This is a website made by blazedd that will automatically stat a pokemon as long as you input the species, level, and if it's owned by a trainer or not. It will then display ALL the information for that pokemon, including XP value, Stats, and move list. Moves are still an update or two behind, but he's currently working on it. There's also a random encounter tool in it as well that includes Gen V pokemon. As long as you have internet, this looks to be a very promising tool. Please note that move info is outdated at the time of this post/edit, but it is still a great timesaver.

Elemental Knight's Spreadsheet: Seeing as his plug is right below this post, I won't say much. It does what just about all the tools I have listed above do. As long as your using Microsoft Excel, you get full functionality, but if your using another spreadsheet program, you'll notice a few functions not working. Still, this is the first all-in-one tool I've seen that doesn't require internet, thus making it a must-have for those who play in locations without it.

Pokemon Trainer Creator: This little knick-knack on DeviantArt lets you create a custom trainer image with little effort on your part. Go through the options until you have something that you like, then take a screenshot. Great way to get a trainer image without scouring the internet. This was shown to me by Elemental Knight on this very thread, though he is not the creator.

Well, you know I have to plug my spreadsheet here.

Feature highlights include:

  • Fully stat any Pokemon, either manually or automatically.
  • Generate a Pokemon's movelist, manually or automatically - with both Combat and Contest data available.
  • Includes the entries for all moves in PTA, easily looked up on the Pokemon's sheet.
  • Create full random encounters of up to six Pokemon, based on search criteria like level ranges, elemental types, evolution stages, or even Trainer types from the games.

Now, caveats: It's an Excel spreadsheet, and some of the more advanced features use macros - this means you need to have a full version of Excel to use it. It has limited functionality in OpenOffice, and (from what I've heard recently) no functionality in Numbers for Mac. So, obviously, it's not for everyone.

Great as I think my spreadsheet is, and as useful as those who've used it have called it, I'm pretty excited about the other tools popping up. So I'm looking forward to seeing what'll get added to this list in the future!

I have to say I use this spreadsheet a lot and it has made my whole campaign run so much smoother. I doubt we would be anywhere near as far in it without this. Again if you don't have the full version of Excel some of the things dont work but even still it helps so much as even just a quick reference tool.

Updated list with blazedd's website and Elemental Knight's excel sheet. Honestly thought I'd see more tools (or methods) be plugged here by now.

(Thread Necromancy, go! But it's relevant and whatnot, so it shouldn't be too bad.)

Here's another cool tool, a Trainer Creator.

Not sure if this has been posted to the forums before, but if not, that's a shame (and if so, I couldn't find it in a search). This lets you design your Trainer's look, so you can have a pretty picture on your character sheet.

It's not perfect, but it's got a whole lot of clothing options, plus every Pokemon up through B&W to pose with. I've had some fun with it!
