Time and effort, really. I've been genning up a campaign since June~ish, and there's still no way it'll be launchable this side of Christmas.. Think about it - you need to create a world from scratch. From scratch to fully populated. In DnD, or any other RPG system, you can just gen up monsters as and when you feel, using as many or as few as you like. But here, due to the "gotta-catch-em-all" phenomena, you have to make sure everything is obtainable - or, at least, seeable. That means prior planning. So too do the Gym Leaders. No good GM can use tall shrubs or boulders to railroad players in a set order - it's just disrespectful and demeaning to baby your players in such a way. True, great GM's can railroad without it seeming like a railroad at all, but for the rest of us we need to prepare for the worst. In my case, that meant stating up teams for each gym at multiple levels - each gym had seven potential teams in total. ... It quickly stacks up. That's still before developing plot and recurring characters. So - yeah. Honestly, i'm not surprised there are so few. The workload is, frankly, ludicrous. The only thing that does surprise me is how often we DO get GM's - there's at least a game recruiting each month. Shame so many die prematurely, but you can't blame them for dropping out. I just started genning up a game on Myth Weavers. Not even close to ready to accept players, since I am trying to be very ambitious in scope, but I'm trying. Keep an eye out a week or two from now, since I plan on devoting quite some time to it. |

Well, I do GM a game IRL every saturday evening, and I'm barely able to keep up with my players. However, despite running a game, I sill want to PLAY it myself, to sit on the other side of the screen for a while. |

GM'ing isn't so bad. I would love to GM a game at some point. Currently, it's a matter of time and commitment. I'm already a player in a campaign online, and am not sure i can commit the extra time to planning and running a session. |

I would be, but it would be for my home group if I did. Can't do one now though, just started GMing a Star Wars game, and I can't really GM two at once. Maybe someday, but I'm just too new to GMing. |

Why wouldn't someone want to GM? Really it's more responsibility than one would imagine at first glance. Without a GM, the rest of the players in most cases cannot really do much to progress the story. Altho has a nice twist where players can interact with one another on the side and that'd be nice to see in other campaigns. But besides that, devoting time to do specifics as others have said (planning settings, characters, interactions, etc) is a big reason. Another is that GMs are going to have to make decisions that may upset either themselves or the players. Not necessarily "I have to try and kill them", but dealing with reactions to decisions that may not be completely what the player would desire. If you actually care about the quality of your campaign and whether your players are enjoying it, these sorts of junctions weigh heavy on a GM's enjoyment on holding a session. I treat my games like I do any other roleplay that I do. Other factors come into play for both the GMs and the players. I am very strict in my belief that if something occurs in real life that you see as important in some way, shape or form (school work, family issues, etc) then those come before a session. I also believe that everyone is entitled to a break from things and if a player or the GM is in a bad state of mind or is going through a lot then that person should be excused from a session or so. Obviously, constantly doing this isn't exactly...productive, but you get my drift. Some people just have too active of a real life schedule to really do anything besides be a player. I'm not sure how similar/different from the norm I am, but really I make up about 90% of my plot, characters, settings, and whatnot on the fly (meaning, usually the night of the session). One thing I've learned from roleplaying and tabletop: You can never anticipate players' every move. I'd rather not spend time developing a deep plot point just to have players completely avoid it altogether. It's also not always in the best interest to 'railroad' players into something. Some people can't stand plans going to waste or having to come up with ideas constantly, and that's probably the GM's biggest challenge. /rant |

I've got the time and such and have GM'd alot of games before (sometimes 4 at a time on PBP threads) but I suppose my hang up on GMing is after doing it so much I wanna be a player again. That is without NPCing a person into the game to be played by me. I aggre with what Rio said in the above statements about the obligations of life and the responsibility. Like him I also kind of "fly by the seat of my pants" save a few planned points integral to the main plot. |

Well, I'm new, but I have an answer to this anyways. I don't GM for one simple reason. I suck at it. I tried it once, never again. (This obviously wasn't on this game, but it's still true.) |

A good chunk of people might want to learn the system first as players before running a game themselves. A new game can be really daunting when you first grab it. I'm not exactly keen on dming one right now just because of the immense world building that would be involved. Even just playing to one of the game's plot can be terribly heavy on just setting up the gym leaders and trainers on the route, not to mention wild pokemon. I have a neat idea, but it could take me almost a year to set up cause I have school and projects I need to work on as well. |
