The morning that greets you is yet another typical summer one - bright and warm, but not yet too hot. Especially with the air conditioning of the Center. All of your Pokémon are fully rested and restored, and the day is ready to be Tackled.

The main floor lounge is much more abuzz with activity then it was last night, as people wake up, ready to seize the day. Evelyn in particular is fairly bouncy, seemingly anticipating watching the Gym battle tomorrow.

But, tomorrow has not yet arrived. And, as the sun begins its steady climb over Mauville, a day of preparation awaits. And perhaps seeing some of what the city has to offer - after all, the last visit was awfully short.

Maris trained her pokemon first thing, as per usual, trying to ignore the feeling of nervous anticipation building in her gut. Her pokemon heal up at the Pokemon Center, as much as they can be. She dropped Quinn, Malphite, and Galio in the PC, and after some careful consideration and whispered good-byes, sent off Jax and Aurelion to the HQ in Slateport, along with 7500 pokeyen and the '25% off hybrid' coupon she'd received what felt like so very long ago.

She spent some time training the two ghosts she'd caught at Mount Pyre; both Kindy and Nocturne were much stronger than she'd given them credit for, and each seemed eager to show off what they were capable of. By the end of the morning she'd convinced them to channel a bit of their power into becoming even stronger; Kindred evolved into a bit of an egotistical Haunter, while Nocturne kept up the competition by evolving into a Dusclops. But something about Kindy's personality didn't sit right with her; and so she resolved to go see that Jules Million fellow at some point during the day.

With them gone, she juggled her team, ending with Fizz, Viktor, Syndra, Kindred, Nocturne, and Azir.

"How about we spend a bit of time around town, and try to meet up for lunch?" she asked her companion as breakfast drew to a close. "I've got some shopping to do and a visiting mentor to seek out. Plus, the more we can gather about the gym, the better. Maybe even hit up the casino later?"

After a typical morning for a Trainer (going through those training motions, making sure one's ship was ship-shape and shapely as a... well-shaped... ship...? And, of course, getting some helpful pointers from a more persuasive Trainer, ie, Maris), Lieve found herself at the breakfast table as well.

Moreover, she found her team notably shaken up too, but first things first. "I hate to ask, but do you think you could spare, say, five-hundred units until I can pay you back? Something I kind of wanted to check out, but I'm just a little short on funds..."

Letting that request sit for a moment, Lieve then continued, "And yeah, the more information the better; if the Mauville Gym's as big a thing as it looks like, I'm sure between the three... Between the four of us we'll find something useful!" With a confident nod, she concluded, "Then we'll meet up back here for lunch, and see if the casino isn't calling. Sounds good."

Eddie wipes some flour off his cheek from where he'd been baking up some more treats with fruits and spices purchased from roadside vendors as they arrived in town. He'd spent the morning overseeing his team's warmups for the day while getting some batches of snacks ready. Including any requests from the girls (and a small sampling of treats for Evelyn). "I'm fine with doing a bit of tourism before the gym fight. Maybe meet up in the early afternoon, get some lunch and then go to the casino?

After having Somen evolve, he'd come to the conclusion that he needed to switch out some of his team. Salt had barely seen any use even after evolving, and it had been far too long since he'd seen Caram. Calling up his parents at the pokemon center, he'd arranged for the unique Bug to be sent to him in exchange for the aquatic Crustle.

Maris' transaction is swiftly completed, with her Pokémon and money being sent off, and a message returning.
Message

Thank you for your patronage. We hope to have your Pokémon returned to you within the next few days, once we are sure that their new form is stabilized, and that there are no problematic side effects. If there are any complications, we will make sure to inform you immediately. Otherwise, we will send you a message once everything is finalized, and your Pokémon has been returned.

Have a nice day!

"I'll go with Eddie," Evelyn says, after the plans have been drafted, "The rest of you seem to be mostly running errands, and I, uh, kinda want to see the city."

Once everyone's set, the group heads off on their own separate routes. Maris is able to go and see the Pokémon Whisperer, who is more than willing to take on any number of Pokémon, to be picked up in the evening, at a rate of 2500 pyen each and a note of what she'd like them to be like at the end.

Lieve swings by the shop where they sold the Shifter off before. The same man is still running the shop, and while he grumbles about exchanging back at the exact same price, he does seem to be relieved to get it back off of his hands.
Eddie eschews any shopping or errands, and instead wanders the town, with Evelyn tagging along, just taking in the sights - and also looking around for some information.

After everyone does some wandering and running their errands, the group meets back up at the Pokémon Center for lunch, wallets lighter, but with some information gained.

Maris tips the 500 pyen Lieve requested into her hands with a smile and hands it over, before heading off.

At the Whisperer, Maris brings out Kindred, who at first turns her great ghostly head up at the idea of being flawed at all. With an hour's coercing and Maris being very impressed by the man's methods, Kindred learns instead to open up to those around her and not try and take on the world by herself. This new cuddly side of her is far more beneficial, Maris thinks as she hands over 2500 pyen.

When she meets back up with the others, Maris is wearing a much sleeker outfit and an excited expression. "I've never been to a casino before," she says quietly. "I'm not really sure what to expect..." She then shares the information she learned about the gym.

Meeting the shopkeep's grumbles with plenty of apologies for his inconvenience, Lieve reobtained - and soon after claimed - the Shifter.

...some might call it foolish to have their star teammate undergo such a process with no chance of adjusting to it before their next big event, but... Okay, there wasn't really much of a but to it. Even so, undeterred, Lieve wasted no time in the application of her newest prize to her prized oldest.

All told, though, her plans left little room for Gym reconnaissance... Meeting back up (the same as always, more or less), and excited but with little to share, Lieve listened to what Maris had found, filled in any gaps she might have been able, then said, "Hmm. Can't say I've been to one, but I've heard they're loud and exciting. What's the word... Stimulating, or something. Make of that what you will, I think it ought to be fun!"

Eddie keeps one eye on Evelyn, while also taking in the street performers, stalls selling various goods both edible and non. He also keeps a close ear out for mentions of the gym and anything that could be of use to the group.

Lieve using the Shifter on Ieza's Pokéball produces a disappointing lack of effects. But, upon releasing the Klang from its ball, the changes are immediate. The gears are a much more purple-grey in tone, flickering a little. But, most pointedly, the main face now has a skull shape, with glowing eyes. There's something slightly unsettling about it.

Regardless of any changes to Pokémon, though, the plan doesn't change, and everyone meets back up for lunch. Pooling the information that they found, it seems as though the Gym Leader has some fondness for Normal-type Pokémon, though he almost never uses them exclusively. In addition, while whatever gimmick is in the Gym at any given time may seem random, there's always some logic to it. Once, for instance, there was a battlefield that seemed like a chessboard. If Pokémon didn't follow the piece's space that they were sent out on's movement pattern, they would take damage.

In addition, there's a bit of a warning. Going to some of the seedier places in Mauville, or the casino, could lead to people trying to influence you in certain ways. The Gym has a betting system in place during matches - run by the Gym Leader's wife, Scarlett - and while attempting to skew results ahead of time is technically against the rules, that doesn't always stop the more unscrupulous people from trying to do so. Of course... one could possibly make a lot of money if they don't get caught.

After Eddie gives his report on what they'd found out, he sighs and scratches his head. "So, given that the gym leader's wife runs the gambling... I'm thinking that whatever gimmick he's going to pull; it's going to be related to some kind of game. It's a bit of a stretch I know, but we don't have any other information to go off of right now." He pauses, before scratching his chin lightly. "Do you ladies want to go to the casino still? I'm kind of interested in seeing what kind of prizes they have."
