You yourself said:
That generally sounds like you're asking for advice in fixing a problem, especially when asking it in the tone of the first post. |

I mean, it is a problem - my players are criminals now. It's THEIR problem, but still definitely a problem that the party didn't have before. I should probably ramp up how many cops are after them, I guess? EDIT: Well, sorry, my bad, I didn't know that going off the rails was considered a bad thing here. I was definitely surprised by what happened. Edited by l33tmaan, Apr 2 2017, 09:30 AM.

Okay to start, "vanilla pokemon" and "Realism" are mutually exclusive. So you're already setting yourself up for this kind of stuff. Second, you made it sound like you had no idea how to handle your players doing what they did and that you were looking for help. And now you're bragging about the scene and the fallout. So forgive me for getting a bit of whiplash here. |

It's most certainly not a bad thing. It's just the way you phased your original post made it sound like you were asking for assistance in figuring out to do, and then you got all snippy when people offered advice. We always enjoy good stories around here, but if it seems to be in a form of asking for advice, that's what you're going to get. If that gets completely snubbed, then, yes, people will get a little annoyed. Edited by Dark Shadow, Apr 2 2017, 09:34 AM.

If it makes you feel better, I got a lot of whiplash during the scene when the Hex Maniac decided to use Hex on a KO'd dude outside of a Pokemon Center in broad daylight, and things just kind of broke down from there. I actually had Nurse Joy come out at this point and go "WTF I'M CALLING THE POLICE" after dragging the dudes into the Pokemon Center.... except then the Hex Maniac confused her and put her to sleep, he had Lampent phase into the Center and finish the dude off, and THEN he got the bright idea to go call the cops himself and try to tell them that someone else did it. AND THEN HE STUCK AROUND WHILE THE COP ASKED NURSE JOY WHAT HAPPENED. I was totally losing my shit at the end there. I fully expected him to kill someone... way later down the line. And kill, you know, the members of the apocalyptic cult who want to destroy the world. Not some punk musician who talked shit and beat them in a pokemon battle. That's really extreme and not at all what I had planned. EDIT: No, really, I still don't know what to do about the Pokemon Center issue. Should they have wanted posters in every Center now? Are they never going to be able to heal easily again? Edited by l33tmaan, Apr 3 2017, 09:07 AM.

Thats the choise they made. So no, no easy healing. Even things like shops are going to be a pain to get to if the are that wanted. -- or maybe: head into the center "Ok we will heal your monsters, why not get a bite to eat while they are resting" then the nurse gos to call the cops while they are unarmed > -- Maybe they can join up with some other bad-guys and use their healing |

Maybe it's just the group I play with, but this doesn't surprise me in the slightest. For all it's light-hearted talk, Pokemon is extremely violent. Almost every episode of the anime has at least one battle; same story with the manga, with chapters named "VS. [Pokemon]" strongly implying a battle will take place. Add on to this plate that almost every mechanic in PTU is dedicated to violence, and you have a melting pot for rampant murder. IRL, violence is discouraged because the consequences are so sever and there are no do overs, not because people are intrinsically disinclined to violence. As for how to deal with this situation, bring the hammer down hard. Wanted posters in Pokemon Centers, PokeMarts, and Gyms would be just the start of it. Their photo's and names in the papers and TV wouldn't be unreasonable either meaning there is a high likelyhood that any given person would recognize them. They would likely lose access to their PC boxes for the period of the investigation as well. Depending on how frequently violent crimes are committed in the region, it might actually be cause for a full court press by Police and League Officials which could mean very powerful Trainers are actively hunting them with teams calibrated just to hard counter them. And they would have very good knowledge of the parties capabilities because much of that is tracked by a Pokedex or the PC system, both of which said officials would have easy access to while they are looking for the criminals. Every capture would basically be a ping as to their current location making tracking them much easier. Long story short, they are criminals of the highest degree and the authorities WILL track them down unless extreme measures are taken by the party to subvert those efforts. |

There needs to be a way back, though, so that this story isn't a lost cause now. Maybe a fine, like pretty much all of their money, or even higher so that they're forced to sell some of their stuff to even afford it. Also some kind of community service sentence. The next story plot point can come out of their court-ordered sentence in some way. But whatever happens, they need a way to redeem themselves if they want to. |

Jesus, that's even more brutal than I had expected. For the sake of internal consistency, though - you're absolutely right. There are few crimes worse than murder, and it would be remiss of me to not exploit that to the fullest. It's interesting that, the way you put it, the usual "safety nets" of the Pokemon world (PC boxes, Pokemon Centers, pokeballs in general) are actually FANTASTIC methods of surveillance and tracking. I wonder how on earth the party is going to retrieve the pokemon that are in their PCs? This is an extreme response... appropriate for such an extreme measure. However, for the sake of internal consistency, I also have to reward the player... his entire concept was rooted in giving Giratina his memories in exchange for magical powers. Honestly, this is the logical conclusion for following a god of death. I can't think of any reason why the deity wouldn't be pleased at a prospective follower doing what would be asked of him... before he's even a follower! My plans were to tempt the guy into doing evil shit for pure magical might, and there's no reason to alter the plan. Tonight, he will meet Giratina in his dreams. Giratina will make a straightforward exchange - he collects souls for Giratina, and he will be rewarded with arcane knowledge. Extended service and loyalty will be further rewarded. The deal will be at-will, and the player can back out at any time... but I don't think he will. He legitimately thinks that his character is going to go to jail, but I'm going to throw him a bone - Giratina will teach both the PC and his starter some horrible, horrible magic. The PC will learn Soul Reaper and his Lampent will learn Malignant Power - both tweaked versions of an existing ability and move. MOVE: Malignant Power Type: Ghost Frequency: EOT AC: 2 Damage Base 2: 1d6+3 Class: Special Range: 1, 1 Target Effect: For every Soul the user has above 0, add +2 to Malignant Power’s Damage Base, up to a maximum of +20, and +1 Range, up to a maximum of +10. If the user has more than 5 Souls, the Frequency becomes Scene x2. The user permanently gains +1 Soul whenever recovering full Hit Points through the Soulstealer ability. This move can be augmented by permanently expending Souls, with GM approval. ABILITY: Soul Reaper Scene - Free Action Trigger: This ability can be activated with 1 of 2 conditions: - The user’s attack with the Grim Sickle causes the foe to Faint - The user has carved a Sigil of Giratina into a target’s flesh and the target is within 10 meters Effect: If one condition is met, then the user removes one Injury from themselves and recovers 25% of their Maximum Hit Points. If the triggering attack killed its target, the user instead removes all Injuries and recovers all Hit Points. If the Grim Sickle’s blade comes into contact with someone inflicted with a Sigil of Giratina, then both conditions are satisfied and the target is instantly killed, plus the user removes all Injuries and recovers all Hit Points. Carving a Sigil of Giratina into someone is an Extended Action that requires the target to be Vulnerable, KO’d, or otherwise helpless and must be done with an instrument other than the Grim Sickle. These are pretty much guaranteed to get him started on a slippery slope, right? |

Honestly, I wouldn't have Giratina offer rewards yet. The PC just screwed up royally by having their identity be so public. It's going to be very difficult to reap any more souls with such a high profile. And even worse is it's going to harder for other reapers to operate in such a hostile environment. I can't imagine a powerful God not acknowledging this reality when they introduce themselves. That could lead to interesting stories about how the group somehow manages to get off the radar long enough to fade into legend. Maybe give them a sample of the power they could have if they were successful. The Blessed and the Damned splat has some stuff for trainers to take as well if you haven't given it a look. |
