Pokémon Trainer

As the topic says, I am trying to run a mystery dungeon style campaign and let my players choose pokemon. There is a robust system for trainers but I did not find any info on playing as a pokemon in the core rules. Has anyone tried this before? Any more experienced GMs see a major problem? Let me know. My general idea is to cut all the trainer stuff and find some way to add tutor points upon level up, and maybe add a little more pc customization for pokemon, but not necessarily add full classes. Thank you in advance

If you are looking for mechanics that are for Tutor Moves and TMs then try these... please keep in mind that i an not an experienced GM and there will be better ways to do it. PMD like ideas Tutor Moves Spoiler: click to toggle TMs Spoiler: click to toggle as for the classes i dont know. mabe try addapting them to PMD equivalents, like throwing range of a pokeball would be throwing objects like rocks. if you where thinking that recruting pokemon to join the PCs adventures would be good then the Command Skill could be for that. General Edu could be for knowing what the different orbs and wands are (Provided you add them... And Experiencecould grant the knowledgeof the orb.) Pokemon Edu... **** what could that be? Medicine Edu could be knowledge of different berrys that heal status. again experiencecan teach it. Sorry if this post was usless because i dont understand the question... but it is something to start you off with anyway. Have fun with this |

Having played in a PMD-Style setting before, a couple of pointers that I learned personally from experience: 1. Keep the Trainer stuff. It adds much more versatility to how people play their Pokemon and gives a lot more flavor to the world. Features that target Pokemon you own can (on a case-by-case basis obviously) either target the user or their allies instead, or NPCs they recruit in the world to bring along. As an example, the character I played was a Cincinno Taskmaster, whose Taskmaster Features only worked on himself to make him much more of a threat as he got injured, and to keep fighting through sheer pigheaded determination. He died, but he got better. There's a system floating around that goes much more in-depth into it, but the very simple version of it is: Pokemon cannot earn stats from Trainer Advancement or [Stat] Tags, and level up as a Pokemon with a separate pool for their Trainer Experience, which is earned the same way a Trainer earns experience (Dex EXP in this instance could be fluffed as Recruit EXP, and gained for each new ally they recruit!) 2. Be careful with Pokemon that have alternate sights! Luxray or any Pokemon with Blindsight is a good example of this, as they can disrupt perfectly lain ambushes or other kinds of traps. 3. Tutor Points is already gained on Level Up, unless you intend for your players to begin as a Pokemon that gains experience in the same way as a trainer. In that case, a Tutor Point every 2 levels until Level 10, then a Tutor Point every 5 levels shouldn't pose too much of a problem? Hope this helped! |

AssaultBird2454, thank you for the advice for TMs and tutor moves, I am going to include a town so having a dedicated merchant for the TMs will work. Jarulso your advice about tutor points and when to distribute them will be super helpful. Lord Fhalkyn thank you so much for pointing out the rules in Do Porygon Dream of Mareep?, I would not have though to look there at all. It is a place to start. Hopefully more people will see this thread, but honestly I have gotten more input and advice already than I was expecting, so thank you very much

I'm surprised no one has posted this yet. You may find it useful. I've been running a PMD style game myself (not the one posted above, but something similar). It's been a lot of fun. Good luck! |
