So I'll be DMing my first game in a few weeks from now, I have my players character sheets, most of the mapping done, and most of the storyline set. However, the only sort of issue I'm having at the moment is one of my PCs wants to "catch em all". At first that sounded great but the more I began thinking about it the more daunting that task looked. My question is how do you DMs make that work? If not, what do you do? I'm trying not to say no to my pcs unless I have to, but this idea of catching every different Pokémon doesn't seem feasible. Any tips, recommendations would be great. Thanks everyone! |

They can try and catch them all, but quite frankly unless you play a campaign for years, it's probably just not going to happen. Even if they collect 4 new pokemon a session by capture or evolution, that still ~180 sessions they would need to complete the dex. And 4 new pokemon a session is a lot. You might have 1 or 2 that live up to that expectation. That being said, why do they want to play that way? Are they interested in exploring the wilderness and seeing what's around the corner? Do they just want to milk the game for all the XP it can give? Do they think pokemon or are just tools/toys who's only purpose is to benefit humans? Knowing what interests them about this pursuit can make things less daunting because you know what they fundamentally want out of that experience so you an incorporate it into the world. That type of trainer is just begging to be given little nuggets about the world and throw themselves into new and interesting situations to get new pokemon. |

Well, with a bit of planning, this can be doable for your player. Let's say you play nearly every week for a year. 50 games. I don't know the pokedex like I used to, but minus the Alola mons, I think there are roughly 750 pokemon. Why, all you have to do is send at least 15 pokemon at them every session! And just at them. Maybe they smell funny to pokemon or something and it causes them to be drawn to them like a beacon. Or like the Brand of Sacrifice from Berserk. |
