Have any of you guys ever had your players fight each other? Whether it's a friendly training bout or a serious bloodbath, I'd love to hear about it. How can I get my players to actually fight not only each other, but other trainers? They never get in league battles unless I have someone ask them to, and then they have the nerve to tell me after the game that they want more league battles! I HAVE POKEMON TEAMS FOR EVERYONE YOU'VE ENCOUNTERED, WHAT ARE YOU DOING? YOU CAN FIGHT LITERALLY ANYONE |

My usual roleplaying group has kind of formed our own version of the "You all meet in an inn..." cliche. In our case it is usually a cold opening to the finals of a small Pokemon tournament with our Trainers being the contestants. The exact format varies depending on how big the party is, but it is a quick and easy way for players to 1. Get into character quickly and test out how their character plays 2. Introduce to the party's characters to each other in a fun way 3. Set the stage for when they eventually face off in a similar format towards the end of the campaign at the Pokemon League |

If you know they want more league battles OOCly and they are fine with you playing NPCs that actively seek battle, then just continue with what you are doing. As long as they get into fights like you wanted, who being the initiator is not an issue. Or you can just tell them the bolded part OOCly and hope they change their way ICly or at least be more active. You can also remind and encourage them to take fights if they wanted to and tell them there you should no need to ask them on literally everyone they encountered. In my experience, there are more PC vs NPC battles than PvP. |

If your players aren't challenging others to league fights despite wanting more battles, maybe they are having some difficulty identifying who they can challenge? Not everyone is a pokemon trainer, and they might not want to commit a faux pas by challenging a 'civilian'. Or they might not want to challenge people in the middle of the street, thinking it'll get the police involved. One possible solution would be to signal more clearly when it's ok to challenge people. Make more of a point of stressing if someone has a belt with several pokeballs or the like, or have them walk by a park where a couple other trainers are already fighting with a group of onlookers who are all clearly trainers waiting for a turn. That way you can hint that that's an appropriate place to challenge someone and that they're all legal targets. If they're especially thick, you could tell them trainers in your region have a custom of wearing an armband, scarf, hat or some such to signal "I'm a pokemon trainer open to challenges", and then make sure to mention it when describing people they meet. Finally, if they're still not biting but continue to complain, try stronger incentives. Institute a 1 trainer xp reward to whoever initiates a challenge (possibly with a limit per level/session/day if progress grinds to a halt or they level up too much). That should have them actively try to challenge everything they come across. Edited by Kian, Feb 2 2017, 10:21 AM.

A couple of my PCs wanted to challange each other. They ran into the problem of knowing each others strategies and tricks. For example one PC has a Ghost/Normal typed Snorelax. The Other had his primeape use assurance, then a ten minute "argument" followed on whether or not the PC knew the typing of his pokemon. I normally discourage PVP if it is not the goal of the campaign. |

I assume they fight side-by-side all the time, why would they be surprised that they know the other's strategy and special pokemon? |

Explaining to your players that yes, you have Pokemon Teams for literally everyone they encounter, would be a good start. You can also take the initiative as a GM and sic trainers on them more often (maybe they've become well-known enough that other trainers want to try their luck?). As a general rule, I also don't encourage PvP. Ignoring the fact that a party is supposed to work together, it also means that they spent the session either spending time fighting each other instead of going out and exploring the world you worked so hard to make, and it can also brew contempt in a particularly competitive group. |

I don't encourage PvP, but I typically accept it, if there's a reason for it to be happening. Very early on in my current campaign, one of my players' characters got upset at another PC for all sorts of reasons - mocking the character for being short af, being a dick, not sharing the same opinions - and challenged him to a duel(to the death). Said character got her ass kicked by the mocking douchebag(who didn't kill her, obviously, and it was in a controlled environment anyway), which upset her even more, so she stormed off. The characters later reconciled, and the bout has been brought up throughout the game, but a main point here is that the -characters- were in contention with one another. The players weren't. That's when I think PvP combat is warranted; there's an in-story reason for it, all involved parties are okay with it, and it progresses the game or provides character development. Or, they might want to do a spar against someone who knows all their tricks, so they can be prepared when a real enemy does. That I don't allow too often, and I don't give much experience for it, but it's worth mentioning. I don't think I'd allow my players to just sit back and battle each other over and over, because that isn't very...exciting. Not only are the stakes low or nonexistent, but it doesn't progress the game at all, unless they're trying to grind up to fight a meat wall, in which case the GM is probably doing something wrongly. I'd just tell them that, look, almost everyone's a potential Trainer willin' to SQUAD UP and take you on if you ask, and that fighting amongst themselves isn't very thrilling. You could also up the stakes, throw villains at them, force battles, things like that, or continue as you are and have NPCs challenge them. |

I was in a game where the GM was trying to force me to PvP against someone, I had to explain to the GM that I, as a player, was not fond of PvP. They said they wanted to know how the player characters measured up to each other. I still adamantly refused, GM got upset with me, later realized they were wrong for trying to force it and re-did how they were going to go about it and let us work together in tag match against two other trainers (who almost destroyed us, order focused trainers are scary x.x) |
