So one of my players took the Breeder edge, and this brought up the discussion of selling Pokemon they don't want/need. Of course, this brings up the question of how much different Pokemon would be worth. In the games, trading Pokemon has always been a one-to-one ratio - no matter how rare one Pokemon is compared to the other, nothing is added onto either side. Of course, in real life, a player wouldn't give up their rare Absol for a dime-a-dozen Pokemon like Pidgey. However, this brings up supply and demand. A Pidgey may be worthless to an NPC in a forest surrounded by them, but people living on a group of islands with no large bird Pokemon would pay a lot more for a Pokemon that could one day carry them from island to island. But PTU has enough rules to keep track of as is, and I don't want an entire rulebook dedicated to the economics of the Pokemon society. TL;DR: Should players be allowed to sell Pokemon, or would this break the game by allowing them too much easy money? Is there a baseline amount for how much they would be worth and how much this would fluctuate by region/habitat/need? |

I'd say you'd have to wing it honestly. You're right that as far as making hard rules for it, that's a pain and a half, and depending on the setting and locale a pokemon that would be worthless in one situation would be worth its weight in platinum in another. |

Buried way in the middle of the GM chapter of the core book, in the section on shops, is a suggestion on pricing for breeders. Of course, the price guide assumes NPC breeders but it's probably a reasonable guess as a starting point for pricing. It's page 464, same place as tutors and chefs. It suggests about 1000 for common, low-powered Pokémon, 5000 for slightly rarer/more powerful ones, 10,000 for something on par with a starter in rarity and 15,000 for even rarer or stronger types. Of course, this is rather subjective (and also depends on how skilled your breeder is), but it gives a rough idea of "tiers" for pricing. In your example, in most places a Pidgey egg would probably be in the lowest tier, but in the Birdless Isles it might jump up a tier or even two, especially from a skilled breeder who can more or less make the Pokémon to order. As far as whether giving players these prices would throw the balance out of whack, that probably depends on how much your party relies on items and/or crafting features, and what they might have access to with their money (if nobody's selling TMs you don't need to worry as much about your players getting access to moves you aren't prepared for, for instance). |

Well, in order to sell, your players have to find people who want specific mon, that they can't get easily, at process they're willing to pay. Maybe have a guild of hunters they can join that broker deals at reduced rates, plus a few local job postings for specific mon, let them post rounds for sale in newspapers, etc. I don't see a problem as long as you leave the agency in your hands. Don't do the tier system for pricing, which lets your player game the system, but rather have random npcs with specific needs if selling mon fits into your campaign. |

Personally, I would imagine/come up with Pokemon supply and demand in the setting and then try to figure out a proper price for the Pokemon. It is up to you as a GM to control on the amount of money for sales and so if selling Pokemon are straightout illegal. Personally, if your player is very interested in doing this kind of thing, I would not say no and I would try to make it reasonable so he cannot earn an insane amount of money yet he will be able to sell them once in a while. In my setting, I rules Pokemon selling as illegal or an underground, criminal activity because the league association and the government doesn't want criminal to have access to all sort of destructive bio-weapons. Pet Pokemon is allowed but they are in careful control and monitoring so trainers selling Pokemon to everyone is a no-no. |

The GM for the game I played in did this, actually. My character was a breeder, too. You could sell Pokemon and Pokemon Eggs at any Pokemon Center. We never ran into anyone asking for a specific Pokemon or Egg, but we totally could've. It used a pretty complicated formula, but basically, every Pokemon species had a Rarity value and a Demand value, on a scale of 1 to 4. The higher that number, the more valuable a Pokemon would be - meaning a very rare, and very in-demand Pokemon, would be worth a lot of money. While the formula was a little complicated, the result was actually kind of elegant. It takes into account just how rare, special, or desired the Pokemon is. I imagine it could be tweaked a little bit for any campaign world. The Formula We Used

Well, I'm running an "80% of humanity is dead" survival game, so really the prices are going to be all over the place. Since money is more limited, there will also probably be a lot more bartering for items rather then straight cash. Supply and demand will also be all over the place. A settlement near a city of potentially hostile Squirtle and Totodile probably won't want to buy any very much (despite them being 'rare' starters); they'd want grass and electric-types to defend themselves. |

Gym leaders! (This may not work in your 80% dead thing) Due to having to battle trainers all the time their pokemon level up. So they need a supply of low level pokemon to keep their teams at the right level depending on the badges. I also had Gym leaders refuse to battle trainers because their pokemon where too strong vs the trainers badge level. However they didnt pay much, they where given a bag of balls and where paid between 20pk-500pk depending on the pokemon caught. I would say to pay a breeder trying to offload a bunch of pokemon 500pk + the price of the ball for most good pokemon. 10-15pk +ball price for "shit tier" pokemon. With things like shineys or rare skills adding an extra 100-300pk Edited by Gamesdisk, Jan 29 2017, 02:13 AM.
