So I'm looking to run a PTU game where the characters are in a post-apocalyptic world and need to survive on their own. I've seen some ideas like it in the forums and it looks fun. It'll be the vanilla game with all the current playtests, Lv 5 Trainers with Lv 10 Pokemon. Has anyone here run a similar idea in any RPG? Do you have any GM or player tips? Things not to do? Hilarious incidents?

Biggest thing that I've seen in survival games is that they can end up really rules heavy. I haven't played in a survival tabletop (aside from the Robinson Crusoe boardgame, but thats different) but I've thought about running one. Its really easy to add things for the sake of realism/gritty-ness (food spoilage, item degradation...), that mostly just add to the rules clutter. No real advice for how to deal with this, other than pick your battles, and be careful.

You'll probably want to hammer down some things about pokémon ecology if you mean to make them survive against the elements. Such as how nutritious pokémon are. I mean, the games hint at it but shy away from actual depictions of people eating pokémon, but your players are going to jump straight to that as a survival tactic.

I'm anticipating them hunting for food, I'm just trying to nail down a good, simple system for foraging and scavenging. The book has a nice item chart, but it doesn't have anything for finding food in the wild.

Given that this is a post-apocalyptic setting, I've got a general system for scavenging set up you could use if it works for you. I kludged it together for my Fallout Mon game. There's a few other things in here that I put together as well you might be able to use.

That system will actually be really handy, thanks! I've also put together a modified system for when they inevitably hunt.

One PC rolls Survival+Pokemon Education, and multiplies it by the Pokemon's size:
Small: x5
Medium: x10
Large: x20
Huge: x30
Gigantic: x40

The fun part is balancing it with scavenging - the average early Pokemon actually give less food then scavenging, but seeing as they're also giving EXP, it hopefully balances out.
