Hey everyone, just new to the PTU system and playing in my first game. I wanted to know what everyone thought of my build. I'm creating this build keeping in mind that I have another character in a PTA campaign that is ridiculously overpowered due to a combination of PTA AceTrainer and homebrew. My pokemon in that campaign are 10 level above everyone else's, have higher evasion, and deal more damage. Plus, I have the fastest sweeper on the team. Anyways, I wanted to pick an all around Trainer who could deal damage in Trainer Combat, help their pokemon deal damage in pokemon battles, and use support moves from the sidelines. The four classes I picked are Ace Trainer, Chronicler, Warper, and Tumbler. I chose Tumbler for its fun use of Acrobatics, as well for the avoiding of Attacks of Opportunity and the Dodge and Burst of Speed features. It seems to be a decently powerful trainer combat class, and my character is going to use steel toed boots along with it for a little bit of extra damage on a mastered Acrobatics to make it At Will. I chose Warper primarily for Probability Control and the fun Reality Bending. Im excited to alter dice rolls. This entire build has a leaning towards dodging enemy attacks and landing accurate attacks myself. To that end, I have teleport and ally switch from this class. I also though Trick and Gravity will be fun, and that Warped Transmission would help my Tumbler do damage in close quarters. I chose Chronicler for the move tutoring capabilities, as the passive evasion bonus to moves in my archive. Plus, gaining Keen Eye, boosting accuracy, and finally being able to give allys priority and use moves not on my pokemon's current move list seems very good for varied situations. Finally, I chose Ace Trainer both for my penchant for the term, and because I wanted a general pokemon battling class to fit any style as I wasn't planning on having more than one pokemon battling class (nor is anyone else in my campaign). Signature move sounds fun, and I was going to use it to add a physical Sheer Force boosted Water Pulse onto my Feraligatr for a reliable ranged attack. Two trainings and two trained stats also seems to be a powerful buff I can easily accommodate any pokemon with. Critical Movement also seems good for a momentary accuracy and evasion buff and Top Percentage seems to be an all around decent feature. The debate I was having with this class was if it might be better in the long run to go for a more specialized battling class like Duelist, or possibly Stat Ace. For roleplay's sake, my character is a photographer from a small farming village with a legendary history of Warping. He took pictures in the woods climbing from tree to tree, and now is off on an adventure to find inspiration. Anyways, what does anyone think of the build? Any comments or criticisms well appreciated. |

I like it mechanically, everything seems nice and slippery to me. However, I am a little curious as to how he got his Warping powers. Is the ability passed down through bloodlines or is it something that's taught in the village? Do they teach it to just anyone, or are outsiders not allowed? Also, just as a side note, the Chronicler does not necessarily has to revolve around taking pictures, wouldn't it work just as well if he had a photographic memory or something? That would make him less artsy as a result, but he'd come off as more intelligent and analytical (and personally I think it'd go well with the Warper aspect). Or if you want to play up the artist angle, what if he painted what he saw while adventuring? Or if he was a writer? I'm just spitballing for fun, you should totally stick with the Pokemon Snap angle if that's what you want. |

That's interesting. I was thinking of combining the photos with writing to make him a HONY type character. His backstory also revolves around the fact that he managed to leave the farm after selling his photos got enough money to make the farm profitable. The story of the warping powers is that a long time ago, a flood threatened his village. It was gonna wipe away everything, when a man with an Alakazam and Gardevoir showed up and teleported the entire town away. As the generations went on, more and more people in the town got warping powers, but eventually the trait dispersed and it no longer showed up. By random chance, my character manages to have the right combination of traits to activate the power of warping the town was once known for. Thus, he's the only one in the village with this power anymore. However, he discovered it quite recently, so no one in the town knows of it yet. |

That's even more interesting. So he tends to write about what he photographs? Does he sell the writings, too, or are they an artistic tool he uses to contextualize the pieces for himself? Is he freelance or does he have a number of reliable clients he sells to? Is there a J.J. Jameson to his Peter Parker? I assume your campaign hasn't started yet - is he starting off with his Warper powers or is he going to slowly develop them within a few levels? You said he has the "right combination of traits" - what are those, exactly? Does he tend to be more... loose in how he thinks and acts? Does he have psychic pokemon? This part seems very interesting to me - I actually considered barring the Elementalist classes in my campaign until a certain event happened to the party to justify why humans can randomly control shadows and stuff. Powers showing up out of nowhere are best reserved for puberty-type coming of age stories, or something like X-Men. What pokemon did you want to use to compliment your character, anyway? Jeez, this post almost sounds like I'm interrogating you or something... |

He's recently established some set clients, but he's also about to go on a journey so communication with specific individuals might be difficult so he may return to freelance for a while (I also didn't want to establish a dedicated client that might lead to too much money earning early on dependent on what the GM wants). And yeah he tends to include comments about what he sees after he takes the photo. I was thinking at night as an extended action he would take notes and include the photos in a journal before eventually creating copies and selling. My character is going to start with Warper powers. On the way from his village to the starting town he learns probability control, Teleport and Ally switch, though he's more confused by the powers and doesn't use them in public. It will be interesting once he returns to the village and talks to the trusted people about the powers he's developed. For the right combination of traits, I was thinking more genetic, but he does have the traits of an inspired traveler, so it'd likely also be a nurture component. Basically, he thinks of life and his surroundings as more fluid, which is why he takes photos to capture still images of beauty. This same perception of fluidity is a projection of his ability to warp reality. He doesn't actually have psychic pokemon in the beginning. His starter is a Totodile he took a photo of in the woods. The Totodile was seperated from its family, and decided to follow my character. I did hope my character could catch a Natu later on, as it has probability control and teleport, and is available around the town. Interestingly enough, my character has a broad range of associated types, but is not solely dedicated to any one. His name is Kaze, or wind, and is inspired by his love for climbing through trees and the Tumbler's flying type moves. He has an elemental connection to the psychic type, as that is the type of pokemon the town is surrounded by, but Kaze himself started with a Water type. It would be interesting for me to go into more detail as to why he specifically awoke the power and what this might mean, but I meant to write it as a story the GM could investigate if he wanted to, or as a form of low key powers. Warper doesn't grant him anything earth shattering, but is a buff to his existing physical capabilities. If there is any further backstory into his powers, it will likely be low key. |

That's all pretty great stuff, I'd like to have a character like that in my party. Did you have any plans for the Totodile since it's your starter? Edited by l33tmaan, Jan 2 2017, 05:09 PM.
