Hi everyone, So I am about to start DMing a campaign for a few of my friends who are new to Pokemon tabletop in general, and I got to thinking about which starter Pokemon I would have my NPC rivals choose based on what players chose for their starter pokemon. Challenge: Complete the list of starter pokemon an NPC Rival character would have for each corresponding pokemon the player(s) might choose. Parameters: 1) All starter pokemon for both the players and their NPC rivals have to be pokemon from a 3 stage evolutionary family (i.e. no Pinsirs, Kangaskhan, Magikarp, Eevee). 2) All starter pokemon for both the players and NPC rivals have to start out in their basic form. (i.e. can't start off with a Charizard) 3) No legendary or mythical pokemon can be starters. 4) A rival's pokemon cannot have a weakness to a player's pokemon in both the basic stage or final evolution. You lose points if the rival's pokemon final evolution ends up with a weakness to the player's pokemon final evolution. 5) No repeating evolutionary families. (i.e. a Charmander can only be the rival pokemon to either a Bulbasaur, Chikorita, Treeko, Turtwig, Snivy, or Chespin not all.) (i.e. if your player chooses a Wrumple for their starter pokemon and you make the rival choose a Pidgey, then a Pidgeot would be the rival pokemon to both Dustox and Beautifly.) Player's Pokemon Wurmple Caterpie Weedle Scatterbug Venipede Sewaddle Axew Gible Bagon Goomy Dratini Deino Mareep Shinx Magnemite Tynamo Pichu Elekid Cleffa Igglybuff Flabebe Togepi Machop Timburr Torchic Charmander Cyndaquil Chimchar Tepig Fennekin Magby Pidove Starly Fletchling Pidgey Litwick Gastly Duskull Hoppip Bulbasaur Chikorita Turtwig Chespin Treecko Snivy Bellsprout Seedot Budew Oddish Sandile Trapinch Rhyhorn Spheal Vanillite Swinub Lillipup Slakoth Whismur Happiny Porygon Nidoran Female Nidoran Male Zubat Gothita Solosis Ralts Abra Larvitar Geodude Roggenrola Aron Beldum Klink Honedge Azuril Totodile Squirtle Piplup Froakie Mudkip Oshawatt Tympole Horsea Lotad Poliwag Bonus Points: 1) If a rival's pokemon in their final evolved form has 2 advantages over 1 or 2 types for the player's final evolved pokemon. 2) If a player chooses a pokemon with a branched evolution (i.e. Wrumple or Poliwag) you get extra points if the rival's pokemon has a type advantage over the player's starting pokemon final evolution whichever they end up with. (i.e. Rival's Jumpluff has a type advantage over player's Poliwrath or Politoed) 3) Double Bonus points if the rival's final pokemon ends up with total stats roughly the same as the player's final starter pokemon. Disclaimer: I know some pokemon will not have good rival pokemon and that's ok (it's part of what makes this challenge challenging) not every pokemon is going to have the perfect rival pokemon because there's a limited number of pokemon fitting the criteria with distribution highly skewed. All I'm asking is that you try your best and see what you came up with. Is Charmander really the best rival pokemon to a player's Bulbasaur? Below is my answers to the challenge.
