Katei Town; The Forest Gateway

Katei Town, while every bit as modern as Tabi Port, doesn't look quite so incongruous in its design and seems to have been designed to be as well-occupied as it is; the centre of the town is occupied by an odd-looking building that looks a little like a doughnut, which is obviously the main attraction of the town as almost everything else seems to have been built up around it. A Pokemon Centre stands just by the entrance to the forest, which cuts off in a neat line as if someone's come along and measured it with a ruler.

When you arrive, it seems the rain has driven most people indoors, although there are a couple of young children and a Squirtle playing in one of the larger puddles.

As the maps upload themselves to your respective Pokedexes, Bernard laughs slightly at Oscar's question. "Do I have Pokemon? Gosh, no. That's why I study them."

"Anyway, you guys were asking about the routes?"
As Bernard talks, he pulls out his own Pokedex - an older model than the version the four of you own - and briefly sketches something out on it, before connecting it to a socket on the wall, which causes a pair of maps to be projected on the wall. The maps look identical to the ones you've just downloaded, except each one has a path around the island highlighted. "Well, the old route was designed so people would visit pretty much everything. Tabi Port and this place didn't exist at the time, not as a tourist attraction, at least. Cain - er, the Chusu City Gym leader - always used to make up silly little jobs for travelling Trainers to do to make sure Sawa Town got as much tourism as anything else. It meant people would be coming back through places they'd already been once, but that was cool. It gave them a chance to catch up and stuff without taking time out of their journeys."

"But when we joined the International League, apparently efficiency was the name of the game, because we had to cut down the whole 'retracing your steps' thing. Starting you guys off in Tabi Port came second, to be honest. Originally the plan was to bring you guys from the port over to Shirogane. So...yeah."
Bernard offers a slight shrug. "If you think Verdance is upset with you guys, just wait until you go to Yosei Hills or Sawa Town. Not that you actually need to go there, of course."

Isabella tilts her head as she examines the maps, laying the chip back on the table absently. "Huh, so the old route had things a lot more interconnected... I think I see what you mean with the towns that got cut off. It's not a problem we have so much in Kalos, because the main routes basically make these two big loops and the only things that get cut off are a couple of little towns to the south." She draws a sideways figure-eight in the air to demonstrate the shape. Geography might not be Isabella's strong suit but she's at least aware of the way her home region's laid out. "And some of them still have other things drawing people in. Like Ambrette's fossils."

She grimaces a little as she glances at Bernard. "I don't know what's up with the efficiency thing, though... I guess a lot of people aren't too happy about the LIP - uh, the International League, I mean - taking things over. Maybe we'll have to stop by Sawa Town anyway."

Sibyl understands how this would ruffle feathers: anyone would be put out with a large international organisation meddling, seemingly without any input from the locals. She follows from Isabellas observations: "Yeah, wow, look at Yosei - they'd have been so heavily trafficked before, now they're down to random wanderers at best." She frowns in anticipation of meeting angry residents in their future. "Can't say Johto's in such a bind either. I think there's about one backtrack, and its not too drastic. Honi's in a tight spot."

She's still dismissive of the misdirection of anger though, making it clear, later saying sarcastically, "Well, I sure hope letting out their anger on us makes them feel better. I'm sure making visitors feel unwelcome will help tourism immensely."

She puts back the chip after the download finishes, saying a quick "Thanks" to Bernard.

Oscar looks down in slight disappointment. He's curious as to how this energetic fellow would comport himself in a battle. Then again, he thinks, that same nature might be precisely why he doesn't battle. And there's something to respect in that.

He smiles when the informations finishes downloading, disconnecting and looking up.

"Indeed, thank you very much, Mr Bernard. Both for the download and the information. I think we may, if everyone's agreeable, want to stop by these apparently-unnecessary. After all, one never knows what one might find in such places. To quote a classic work: a straight line may be the shortest distance between two points, but it is by no means the most interesting. Or the most advantageous."

He looks to the door. "But on a more immediate note, I don't suppose you know when this rain will stop? This practice tournament you mentioned sounds intriguing."

"Er...yeah, hang on a minute." Bernard starts typing into his own Pokedex again. "Weather forecasting is pretty difficult here, but the Professor was working on a program to do it. Before she got distracted with the whole 'International League' thing, anyway. It never got finished, so...take it with a pinch of salt, but apparently the rain should stop tomorrow. Oh, in a few days, by the way, there's meant to be a really heavy storm blowing through. So you may want to watch out for that, or something."

"If you're interested in the tournament, by the way, it's run by the Pokemon Centre, so you'll want to ask there about it."

"Coming from a place as bustling as Goldenrod, I can't even imagine getting annoyed because loads of people aren't passing through your town. But I guess it makes sense. I've never been to Ecruteak but I hear the hotels and whatnot make a killing off it bein' where it is."

Jeremy nods as Oscar proposes the detours, but has to resist the urge to roll his eyes at the pomp he uses to do it. "I'm down. I'm all about seeing as much of the world as I can, so exploring sounds good to me."

He does a small, waist-level victory fist pump when Bernard says the rain is due to stop tomorrow. Salt or no salt, Jeremy remains hopeful...until Bernard drops the bombshell about the storm. "Can you be more specific? I definitely don't feel like getting caught up that particular creek with no paddle."

"Ask the Center about the tournament, check." Like the others, Isabella is pleased by the news that the rain's due to stop tomorrow. The threat of the big storm makes her grimace a little. "Great. Well, maybe we'll be lucky and be far enough away to be out of its path by then. Guess we can check the weather as we travel. Do you get big storms often around here?"

She shakes her head and runs a hand through her slowly-drying hair. "Anyway, yeah. Let's explore all we can! I mean, who knows what we'll find that everybody else would miss? We've run into some pretty strange stuff already." Granted, Isabella's curiosity far outstrips her ability to avoid getting lost while exploring.

Sibyl smiles as the thought of a less wet day, which disappears after hearing about the incoming heavy storm. When Jeremy mentions Ecruteak, she answers near automatically, "Oh yeah, can confirm: people love looking at old things. Starts getting less interesting if you're living there though, have to say," nodding in agreement. She continues on, referring to the so-called 'redundant' stops, "Sure, we can go visit. Couldn't hurt could it?"

She also nods in response to Isabella mentioning asking the Pokemon Centre. Time to put the new additions to the test.

The rest of the day goes by uneventfully (if somewhat damply, because the rain doesn't let up). The only notable event is when one of the other League groups catches up, though they promptly occupy most of the ground floor of the Pokemon Centre with various pieces of wood and fabric that, over the course of the evening, they assemble into a rudimentary if functional wagon.

As promised the next day, the rain has departed leaving the sun shining on a reasonably warm morning. The resident Nurse Joy has already attached a sign-up sheet for what is termed a 'casual tournament' to the main desk by the time any of you are awake. The first matches begin at 11am, leaving you plenty of time to prepare.

Isabella was simultaneously impressed with the second group's resourcefulness in bringing a wagon and tempted to offer unhelpful questions like "why didn't you put it together back in Tabi Port?" She manages to restrain herself, mostly because she's gotten the group into one set of rivals already. In any case, she's out bright and early the next morning, scribbling her name on the sign-up sheet for the 'casual tournament' - Isabella's practiced an impressive, loopy, stylized signature that is unfortunately also close to illegible, which is why she prints her name next to it even if it isn't required. Considering how long "Isabella Celandine" is, this gets a little cramped.

Then she sets out into the new, sunny day to train her Pokémon and especially give the birds some free flying time, after the rain had them cooped up yesterday. She doesn't want to work them too hard and tire them out before the tournament; she's still finding a balance between exercising hard enough to push her Pokémon's boundaries and going too hard and leaving them spent for the rest of the day. "Nice loop, Hirondel! Now dive! Let's see if you can tag Prickles before he can dodge!" Something catches her eye as she watches her Pokémon fly, and she scoops it up curiously.

Once the others are up, she lets them in on a discovery. "Remember the nutty day we had, second day out? I picked up this TM before you-know-who showed up. Totally forgot about it until I found it in my bag this morning. It's Payback; none of my Pokémon can learn it. Anybody want to try?"

Meanwhile, Prickles snuffles about in the bushes near the Pokémon Center building, looking for anything that seems interesting.
