This is in reference to the pokemon mystery dungeon games. Anyone actually actively run one of these? I'm kind of curious. I ran one of these very long ago when I had very little DMing experience and it was pretty fun.

I played in such a game once, more to play with the format than anything else. What we decided is that determining a "Scene" is probably the greatest challenge, since a character's Scene frequency moves and abilities are much more precious. The Pokemon's six move slots should only count for moves learned in traditional ways (and honestly, consider bumping this up to seven or eight, since the team will have far fewer moves between them), moves gained by classes should be treated as trainer moves. The game really needs classes to work properly. Without them, the game risks becoming boring, since the characters will have far less mechanical application of their traits and quirks. A few classes need tweaking to work properly, like a mentor's skills helping his comrades, or a commander being able to give orders to the other teammates. Some classes focused around pokemon battling just don't work anymore. Consider adding in a few Game of Throhs or Blessed and the Damned classes to replace them, since those tend to work well as character empowering classes. These will also help address the generally lower power of the players. Game of Throhs works particularly well for providing classes and flavor, since PMD worlds tend to have lower tech levels anyways. The other consideration is that a party is much, much weaker, in terms of not having six backups, and not having an instant "get out of jail free" card in the form of recalling an imperiled pokemon, but also in terms of raw action economy. Hit Points also become a serious concern, and recovery items must be readily available. As PMD is indeed a rougelike, inventory management makes complete sense to be a a part of the game. I wanted to run a game like this, but I never got around to it. My main problem with it is that the game isn't meant to be run like this with its current mechanics even if this is listed as an option in one of the books. Unfortunately, leaving this kind of gameplay to the whims of the gm to homebrew the mechanics becomes problematic because far too much needs to be tweaked to make it work properly. I really hope that further updates lead to supporting game mechanics for a PMD-styled game. Until then I probably wouldn't try it out. |
