Something that might help would be to consider not using "route trainers" at all. Don't include a battle because you feel you have to to fill out a session - try and make every time the player encounters a trainer at least somewhat meaningful. Maybe instead of Youngster Joey battling one of your players because they made eye contact north of Violet City, he battles them because after capturing a Rattata, theirs was of such an unprecedentedly high percentage that he has his compete with it, culminating in a one on one battle determining who's is really the best. If he becomes a rival, it's a much more natural process then the traditional grandchild of a forgetful professor. Edited by Onidrill, Mar 6 2016, 02:57 PM.

Oops, I guess I completely missed the point! Sorry! Adding in unusual tactics or slightly higher-levelled Pokemon that are at least net neutral to the party's attacks, or unique tactics fitting with their personality with the specs to match (the nervous trainer using highly defensive tactics and hiding behind rocks with defensively strong stats, the ninja using guerrilla tactics with speed, etc.) could help make them more interesting. Bringing out a new Pokemon the party hasn't seen yet with an interesting set of moves and abilities can make the whole encounter a bit more memorable. As long as you derive the fighting style from the character concept and give the Pokemon the stats and moves to match, I think it'll turn out fine. |

Idk how you play (play by post, skype, actual tabletop...) but depending on your medium, you could play special battle music for the fights. same with gym leaders n things, to lend them a bit more flavor or something |

I am late to this but here are my opinions. Usually, rivals are rivals because one, they have different philosophies/styles/approaches, and usually opposite of, your PC or two, they share similar philosophy/style/approach of your PC but is stronger. In the case of one, you should buff up the conflicted part and likely weakness to the PC team. For instance, your PC is a defense-oriented trainer then his rival should have a crap ton of ways to break defense and will run Pokemon who can bulldoze a city in one move. In the case of two, the rival's Pokemon level should be higher and the style more efficient than the PC. So, to continue the example, an even more defensive team or maybe a full bruiser team that has efficient defense yet is able to have decent firepower at the same time. You can also not pre-allocate rivals and let the PCs fight enough route NPCs until they eventually find a rival, be it for RP reason or that NPC won three fights in a row against a specific PC. In this case, you have multiple fights in history to analyze and should be able to know how to improve said rival's team to continue his/her winning streak. |
