The only idea I could come up with is inspired by a NPC from Black/White 2 in Virbank City. He said that the Roxxy claims the best way to fight a Gym leader is to only use Pokemon that are the same type of that gym. |

Type is just a way to make a Gym more memorable, honestly. Remember Blue in Gold/Silver/Crystal? There was no type theme there. Forcing a particular playstyle can be just as effective as using a specific type. Some other ideas could come from the Orange Island series of the Anime. There was a bobsledding tournament there. Gyms are much more memorable when they do something unusual anyways. Change the very theme of the battle! Make it a day-long wargame where you issue commands to your pokemon via walkie-talkie. Make the entire Gym a Legend of Zelda style dungeon with puzzles! Get the Trainer involved to make those Martial Artists feel involved! Make it a fishing contest ,that only pokemon can participate in! Make a Gym into a contest! The sky is the limit! |

I like making gyms based on capabilities. An amorphous gym with barred walls, allowing some pokemon much more mobility than others. A Threaded gym in a hedge maze where pokemon use Threaded shifts to divide and conquer the PC's. You get the idea. Besides that, though, I'm surprised no one mentioned Inverse Battles. |

Thank you all for the ideas and tips, not only for gyms but also for opponents the players will go against in tournaments(I need a ton of them). I think I will be going for a mix of battle, mini game, teamwork-oriented and some weird things like draft a team or so and make gym badges more like scout badges(achievement) for trainers to collect. |

Ah! Speaking of Scout Badges! Terrain! Take a look at Survivalist. Grassland, Forest, Wetlands, Ocean, Tundra, Mountain, Cave, Urban, Desert. Come to think of it, one could build an entire team just based on these locations alone. Seems like a good fit if your Gym Leader is more of an actual ranger than anything else. |

And depending on how evil you are, SURPRISE Inverse Battles. Build up the gym beforehand as being of a certain type, and then invert everything when the PCs actually start fighting. |

How about a Gym based on your ability to improvise? Like POkemon BAttle Revolution, from a pool of random pokemon (Provided by the gym) you choose 6 random pokemon (You know which pokemon you choose, but what you don't know is that it's going to be randomized) and the leader chooses another 6 and then from a roulette you spin it and take the pokeball that landed on your space, do this 6 times and then abttle it out with your new improvised team! Sounds really scary but quite the experience! |
