So I am just starting out PTU and I have read quite a bit of the forums. I have heard that not all Pokemon are created equal and have seen why some are bad. But I want to know as a whole what Pokemon are people really enjoying or having success with? I am not worried about min-maxing I just want to have a good time. |

From my experience(which is not a lot, mind you), Pokemon who are strong in the game are generally safe pick, like...a Dragonite is a Dragonite, the goodness is there, especially so because you can have minimum of 6 moves on your Pokemon in PTU. With that said, Pokemon with bigger move pool are solid picks as well. The gap between Pokemon in this game is much closer than the game actually, so even if your favorite is an average Pokemon, you can still play it and have success in this game. At most, they are just more limited in role and less versatile. The "bad" one can be okay but you probably have to be more creative to discover their awesomeness. |

True, while there is less of a difference between a good and bad pokemon, you'll find some do struggle more at the early stages due to poor move pools and you'll have to talk with your GM about TM and Tutor access to help them along which is not an issue to be faced with in the game. Pokemon like Ralts and Gastly spring to mind due to not picking up a second damage attack to around Lv 20, Status attacks can only carry you so far (especially when you stuck with Lick on a low attack pokemon). They'll probably not be the only ones but their prime examples for what to keep in mind. |

As a DM for the past 5 months I have tinkered with a lot of Pokemon for my players to battle against. There are some severely underrated pokemon out there these are in my opinion decent pokemon to grab a hold of early if you can. Get- Geodude - Magnitude is freaking busted with a powerful defense it's just amazing. It's learned super early, and if your group is running with multiple ones of them it creates for some easy knockout synergy since not a lot of early game pokemon have the ability levitate. Oddish - Holy crap this dudes amazing especially when it evolves. Semi-decent stats for early game, acid being focused on one target if your team decides to run multiples is Tier 1. Gloom gets a unique ability that gets to apply a status effect when it's hit with a melee attack (I think). Jigglypuff/Cleffairy - Sing is busteddddddddd... nuff said. Mankey - With a modest attack stat and low kick you can probably keep this dude around in your party as the pokemon you fight are going to get larger and larger. Meowth - HOOOLLLYYY CRAP can you just make horde encounters so meaningless with a decent scratch attack with it. Larvesta: YES YES YES! such an awesome little dude he puts it in wherever he goes with his ability to raise flamecharges DB. It pack's a really nasty punch but It's stats constitute that it can be acquired at a lower level. Chances are you might not see it or volcarona til much later in your campaign. Honedge: Probably not underrated but this dude's a freaking beast. Steel typing and ghost. Get one ASAPPPP. Probably won't see one til much later in the campaign. Unless you can sneak it by your dm to let you pick one up. Natu: It's like a bargain abra that isn't useless til it evolves. Definitely worth your time to pick up one. Good evasion and powerful attacks. Pineco: Only for the sheer wtf factor that it learns self-destruct at level 5. Magenemite: Typing is beautiful for early game. Modest stats and moves to go with it as well and knows levitate! Sandshrew: Rollout+Defense curl turns you into a mini-boss and its... its just so much ridiculous damage... Avoid - Diglett - Useless it's stats are nowhere near powerful enough to constitute it from staying alive for longer than 2 rounds. 7 times out of ten it's going to get 1 shotted. Nidoran family - Just don't their move sets are pretty awful for their typing. Hopip - This dude just screams kill me. Move sets trash, stats are trash just don't. Kabuto and Omanyte Family - If for some reason you get one of these two as a fossil and revive it early. Just... they are pretty awful stat wise and typing wise. If I missed anything it's more than likely that they are just known decent/bad/amazing for obvious reasons in relation to their virtual counterparts. I can definitely answer more questions about pokemon specifics if you would like. |

Probably the biggest offenders in terms of being "unusable" in my mind are melee-oriented fish and pokémon with low HP. For the fish, if the fight isn't occurring primarily in the water, the opponent can easily get out of range, with nothing you can reasonably do to stop them, because your Overland is abysmal. Ranged fish don't have it as bad because of their range. For things with low HP, outside of a 1v1 where you can out-speed and oneshot the opponent, you absolutely need HP to survive, whether you're a tank or a sweeper. Most battles won't be 1v1, so that makes HP a very important stat for any pokémon, but if HP is the pokémon's lowest (or second lowest) stat, you usually won't be able to invest an adequate amount of points into it to compete, and you'll either end up underpowered for spreading yourself too thin, or overly frail for ignoring HP. Just about anything else is usable, although bad move pools can be problematic on occasion. Edited by Kairose, Mar 3 2016, 11:44 AM.

I dunno Dark Shadow. It depends. A Dark/Ghost Shedinja with Safety Goggles would be pretty deadly. |

I've had this discussion before. From experience, it's boring. See this thread for more reasoning, so as to not derail this one. |

Butterfree quickly becomes an absolute beast. Mr. Mime has very few weaknesses on top of amazing defenses and gets great abilities. If you can pick up a mime jr. early on, you won't regret it. Probably not a surprise, but Arcanine. Mountable, good overland, can be a mixed sweeper, and it can get some pretty good coverage moves. Just some of the favorites my players have had. |
