I personally don't think it would. The disregard for life and anything of value is what DND players live for. In games that I play as I'm usually a blood thirsty player so I wanted to try something new with my characters tonight because they have caught enough pokemon that they don't use and they want to find some way of donating them to new players. So I thought hey why not give them a real reason to use them. What I'm doing. Generating a 100x100 map and loading it to roll20 with complete LOS and cave infrastructure. Completely furnished with traps and hazards that they have to avoid and or overcome. Obviously there will be sweet sweet rewards for the players at the end but the price of glory always comes at a cost of defeat. If you are interested in playing tonight for something like this I posted in the Union room with the specifics. http://forums.pokemontabletop.com/topic/10418500/1/#new |

I mean... not that there's anything wrong with playing that way, but my players would totes disagree. My first time GMing PTA, one of the players accidentally roasted some Sunkern to death with their Chatot's Heat Wave. Player and character were both really distraught after that and two of my players have told me that they wouldn't want to play in a villain campaign. They'd fight little kids on various routes, and purposely not use their most effective moves to mitigate the chance of accidentally offing some random kid's best friend. To each their own, different player types and all that jazz. As for the ruining childhood bit, I think only weird conspiracy theories about the older games and/or anime would be able to do that. Or a campaign that follows RBY, GSC or (maybe) RSE version's story but somehow makes it grimdark. I play and think about pokemon tabletop and the video games too much to associate the rest of it with just childhood, I suppose. Edited by Marhatus, Feb 25 2016, 01:32 AM.

As much as I generally enjoy the kind of pain and misery something like a "Hunger Games" scenario could grant, I find I generally don't like it much with Pokemon. That's one the reasons I made the death threshhold pretty hard to reach for PTU. I think 1) Pokemon is too intertwined with themes about friendship and interpersonal relationships influencing personal growth and 2) Pokemon are cute animals and I don't want cute animals to die :(. That said I'd love to run a short Hunger Games-esque campaign in some other system... or heck even PTU as long as the Pokemon weren't fluffed as cutesy monsters. |

Hey Doxy. I'm one of Articuno's players. In regards to your feelings of pokemon I would like to sincerely apologize for some of the things that have happened in our campaign.

Adding more realistic levels of Pokemon mortality can make otherwise basic decisions incredibly challenging, since basic moves can have serious implications. Not everyone can make the kinds of decisions that might result in the deaths of Pokemon with ease. That said, it is also a sobering experience, that can also be a learning experience. One such example, explored in Pokemon: The Origin of Species, think about what happens if a wild Pokemon escapes from battle while afflicted with leech seed. As an ending note though, a Pokemon version of The Most Dangerous Game sounds completely badass. |
