post apocalyptic; Looking fir ideas for my world

Im working on a post apocalyptic campaign for my game group the game will start 20 years after the apocalyptic as my group travel to this dimension from a link cable. the Idea for the Apocalyptic is much like the show Zoo where the animals all at once start attacking and killing humans. I am using a virus in the pokemon storage system that will spread in to wild pokemon as how it happen. But i would also like to pull from other post apocalyptic show like have crazy tribes in the desert like mad max. or survivor communities like the walking dead. do you all have any ideas that could help improve my world.

As noted, Fallout is a great universe to read up on, especially the pre-fallout 3 stuff. Fallout New Vegas is also a decent place to look for more specific examples. As fun as the Elder Scrolls with guns is, Bethesda hasn't really been good to the lore.
Planet of the Apes could be a starting point on Pokemon running the world now, though obviously (maybe?) with lower intelligence. Maybe an Alakazam could organize some pokemon into a coherent society?
I am Legend (Either the new one or the Original) could give you a feel of how urban areas work, and how to feel about a roving band of Darmantian that tear through the ruins of an urban center. Also, it can give insight on the plights of being the only humans in a wide area. Also, a time to ask, "How many humans survived?" Are there lots of them in camps, maybe only the fittest survived? Or is this a potential extinction-level event?
Reign of Fire could give insight into how the pockets of remaining humans are forced to react when something like a fully grown Garchomp shows up looking for dinner. Humans are forced into hiding like rats, yet must fight with every drop of power and intellect they have, since a hungry Garchomp won't just leave. No amount of sheer power is going to let humans that are barely holding on to beat a ten-foot land shark that hits upward of 2-3 hundred mph, either. This is also a good time to talk about the new ecosystem. Humans do not have an insignificant impact on the pokemon world, remember! Humans are the Apex Predator, and defenders of the status quo. When something like a Garchomp or a Tyranitar decides it wants some new territory, the first thing that might raise an objection with that is humanity, who sends in a strong trainer with pokemon tooled to the job to remove it. How might a Tyranitar descending from MT. Silver into what used to be Viridian city, and setting up shop there do to the local pokemon populations? What would be able to take advantage of the situation? Would the swarms of Beedrill in Viridian forest be enough to prevent the Tyranitar from migrating north, or would the entire area from Pallet to Pewter become Tyranitar country?

As far as Pokemon examples, the Orre region of Pokemon Colloseum and XD can be a loose example of how pokemon society springs up from nothing, though adding more ruins of civilization would be good. However, it also emphasizes the "desert" aspect to post-apocolypto, which may or may not be what you are after.

In general, Post-Apocolypse games can be tooled very easily to feel like a western. The cowboy days were already about taming a wild, uncivilized world (that was the theory anyways), and was already full of the saltiest, grittiest badasses you ever did see. Just adding actual monsters to the mix is easy! (Professor Eastwood would be a natural fit here, kid.)

Another place to look, is pokemon's past. Or more specifically, the SMT series. Shin Megami Tensei contains numerous examples of how society functions when murderous 'mons creep around outside, and some people command them for good, or for evil, or that one guy who has a much larger plan then everyone else.

One important thing to determine, is the eventual goal of this campaign to survive, or to reclaim humanities' seat of power? Another way to determine this, what will the world look like in another 100 years? How about 200?
If the answer is a world very similar to the world they left, then what events could lead to that result, and how can your players interact with that? What steps were crucial in humans reclaiming the throne?
If the answer is a world very similar to the world they are playing in, why is this stalemate against the world reached? Is the world filled with small villages that speak of the "ancient civilization", and raid the ruins for magical artifacts?
If the answer is a world without humans, what finished them off? The aforementioned newly expanded threat of hyper-predators like Garchomp and Tyranitar? Or maybe infighting, or the last gasp of the horrors of the old world? Heck, maybe your virus wasn't a spontaneous mutation, but a deliberate act by someone crazy enough to do it.

Hopefully this gave you some thought points and good ideas for references.

I would also like to slip in a note to Dmitry Glukhovsky's Metro 2033.

Like Fallout it is set in a nuclear apocalypse, but it has a slightly grittier tone. The residents of Moscow are forced down into the underground subway tunnels to shield them from the radiation. The plot of the story happens fairly shortly after the bombs dropped, only 20 years, so the radioactive fallout on the surface is still a very dangerous threat.

Settlements are located at the train stations and the tunnels between are usually are unsecured and filled with dangers, either being of a mutant or supernatural nature. On top of that, several subway lines are controlled by the remnants of old world powers, such as the Soviet Union and Nazi regime.

Just I thought I mention it since it may not be that well known.
