So I have an idea for a fan made game, but it will use all previous towns, routes, and cities already posted in just about every main series pokemon game launched. but Im having a bit of an issue...

I have downloaded pokemon essentials v16.1 and rpgmaker xp, I would like to try and recreate each region (updated if possible) to the original designs layout. but either im finding it difficult to find good reference material or it far to time consuming to physically create each on from scratch.

The included regions I plan to add:
Kanto
Johto
Hoenn
Sinnoh
Unova
Kalos (a 2D version as i dont think pushing a 3d version is possible in rpgmaker)
Orre
and a personally made region I will design myself (not worried about this one)

So in other words making every town from Pallet to Opelucid, route 1 to 201, and everything in between.
If anyone has any ideas on how to either quickly create them in rpg maker (or even the dimensions/ tile counts for everything), convert them into a format that it can read or just plain pull it from any other project you have seen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and credited when the game is published online.

If anyone is curious about the plot, the main things I can say without giving out too much information:

For reference to the games I suggest Bulbagarden. It's world section has pictures and map data for all the main series games.

I'm also using rpg maker XP to create maps. DMing my first PTU campaign and my players wanted to be in Hoenn.

To be honest, it's much easier to approximate than it is to be true to the source material.

My process involves getting the general shape of the route or town in question, then jotting down any important landmarks or buildings. I'd rather it look pleasing than be 100% the same. Then I export an image of the map and upload that to roll20. Finally I lay down the npcs/pokemon.

For example I've attached the ones I worked on today :

I think you might be a little overambitious, especially for your first game. In my experience, it's a herculean effort for a party of Trainers to visit all the cities in one region, let alone several.

That said, I applaud your gumption! And if you're really interested in rebuilding the regions, I think I can give you a head-start: my sprite collection includes 100% complete maps for Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh, pulled directly from the games. And, y'know, hundreds of sprites you might otherwise find useful.

EDIT: Oh, this is in RPG Maker, not PTU. (I think you might have the wrong forum; this should probably be in Pokemon General.) Still, I think you're being very ambitious - I'd suggest focusing on a small Pokemon experience, a microcosm or vertical slice - like a single town, gym, and cave, with a full length of less than 10 hours to get through. You're much more likely to complete the project that way, and to learn lessons that'll translate to bigger and better projects.

I'd recommend setting realistic goals if you ever want to complete such a gigantic project. For example, get the first few routes and cities of Kanto into the game, change what you want for your overarching fangame, then work on the next few cities until you have Kanto complete. Then release the early version for testing and feedback, and continue to add routes, cities, and regions in future updates. Breaking it into smaller chunks will give you a significantly higher chance to see it through to completion, and make the massive mountain of work the project requires much less daunting. Early version releases can also help you gauge feedback and make modifications before completion, fix bugs, and garner interest along with support. There is no quick and easy way to make a game, especially a large project like this, so it is important to manage your time and motivation in order to see it through.

Also, ask for permission before using assets from other people's projects! Once you have permission, make sure to give all proper credit.

I know of exactly one fangame that is finished that has a comparable number of regions (I think it just has Kanto through Unova). It also had one fanmade region. It's called Pokemon Raptor and I didn't even bother to get to the second town because it was so unpolished.

With a small team, there are basically two ways to make a game. Small-scale but detailed, or large-scale but bare-bones. Bethesda-scaled games require a Bethesda-sized team, plus tons of work put into communciation, quality control, etc. I'm not saying don't do it, I'm just saying do some research first (maybe give Raptor a try) and start with something smaller as the others have said, so that you know what kind of time commitment you're really signing up for here.

EDIT: removed since it's answered in the spoiler
