"Master of Drills?" Izaya asks confused

"Most of us just train by ourselves. Are you saying you do things differently in your time?"

"Indeed," Roth said, folding his arms. "In my time, warriors train as a group, and their training is overseen by a veteran soldier. That veteran is recognized as the Master of Drills. It is the duty of the Master of Drills to instill in their warriors both physical and mental fortitude, and it is done as a group in order to strengthen the bonds of camaraderie that can only be forged by overcoming shared difficulty and challenges," he said. "Your performance on the battlefield is not quite so surprising, considering your lack of training, and the same can be said for the others."

Izaya looked his cousin in the eyes "Train me then"

"I've never had much formal training when it came to fighting. You saw me at the Tea House. That 'grace' you noticed? A lot of my footwork in battle comes from my training as a dancer. The closest to combat training I ever got was from Michi, and that was mostly about harnessing the powers I have, controlling them."

He held out his hands and clenched them into fists "But I need to be stronger, and I need to know that I did everything I could."

Looking at Roth and smiling, Izaya shook his head "I know that you have my back out there. So if we train, maybe I can have yours too"

"Very well, cousin," Roth said. "I will train you, mentally and physically. You may detest my methods, and you may even come to hate me for it, but that is alright. It is the duty of a Master of Drills to ensure that his pupils are prepared for all facets of combat, and to ensure that they survive, and I intend to see that duty done. Meet me in the central courtyard in ten minutes and we will begin," Roth said, heading to his private quarters.

"Alright" Izaya nodded

Ten minutes later, he headed to the meeting place, the coat that Entai had made slung over his shoulder.

Roth was right. He had been too quick to give up during that fight, too scared of causing more harm. He had a chance to end it, and instead did nothing. Where was the fire he had when arguing with Tsuru? His conviction to save as many people as possible? His hesitation might have cost those people their lives. He was as bad as Yami. That would have to change before they next fought the Nobles.

Hanging the coat nearby, he slipped the top half of his kimono down so it hung loose around his waist, his chest bare. Halfway up his arm you could see where his gauntlet had once fit, now fused into his arm, the colours of the metal juxtaposed by the paleness of his skin, he had always been a pale child, though that seems to be his fathers influence.

Checking the straps on the Griseous Gauntlet, Izaya stared at the jewel set into the back of the hand. The golden colour of the gem wasn't so dissimilar to the colouring of his father, fitting since the gauntlet was half of the key to his realm.

With a quick motion, Izaya smacked his knuckles together, a sharp ring sounded out, as though metal had just collided with metal. Shaking his head, he began to stretch much like he did before practicing dancing, starting by loosening the joints in his arms and moving downwards, focusing on each ligament before moving on to the next.

Jabbing a few times into the air, Izaya looked around for Roth

Roth was waiting just outside of the courtyard, hiding amongst the shadows...well, as well as any six-foot monster of a man could hide, that is. But he had the benefit of hindsight on his side, so he knew just how to remain undetected...

He padded forward softly behind Izaya. No clinking or clacking to give him away, Roth was unarmored, wearing only a simple linen shirt and trousers. He was carrying two simple wooden quarterstaves, requisitioned from some nearby weapons rack, or broom closet. As he padded forward, it would be plain for most anyone to see, perhaps even comical the lengths he went to. Roth was not particularly sneaky. He nearly stepped on a fallen branch, pulling his foot away at the last second as time flickered. Hogun looked up from where he was resting in the corner of the yard, seeing Roth, and then lay his head back down.

As Roth finally, carefully, closed in behind Izaya, he took the two staves, reared back with them, and swung for his ankles.

"You dropped your guard," he said in a perfectly normal tone from just behind Izaya as he swung.

As the quarterstaves nearly hit Izaya in the ankle, he spun and took a step back, the sticks hitting right where he had been a second before

"Have I?" Izaya says with a smirk, though internally he was berating himself for not paying closer attention

He lashed out at the staff in Roths dominant hand, attempting to get him to drop it

"Good reflexes," he said as Izaya kept his footing. "And good try," he grinned as Izaya swatted at the staves. They hardly moved in his grip. Roth took a step back and offered one of the staves to Izaya.

"First lesson. Use your senses. I am not an easy man to miss, and yet I was able to sneak up on you. Had I meant you ill will, I could've stabbed you in the back. If I recall, this place has been attacked at least once before, in the night, during a stealth operation. Even it is not impenetrable. Eyes," he said, putting two fingers to his eyes, "ears," he said, putting his free hand to his ear, "and instincts," he said, pounding his fist lightly against his solar plexis.

"Now then. Let's get down to business...to defeat, the Court," he said spinning his staff and planting it into the dirt.

"To be blunt...you wear your heart on your sleeve," he said flatly. "It may be struck easily and repeatedly, and that makes you vulnerable. You must internalize them," he said, pouding his fist lightly onto his heart. "Set them in steel, so that when the enemy calls you half-breed, abomination, and whore's son, it will not harm you," he said, emphasizing each insult with vitriol. "On the battlefield, your heart must stand as a fortress at the heart of the kingdom of your body. If the fortress is lost, then you will fall with it. Only once the battle is over can the gates of the fortress be allowed to open, only then can grief and sorrow be allowed in," he said.

"Now, let us spar. I will try to pierce the fortress of your heart. You must resist it, and overcome me. I believe that should be a fair contest," he said. "Remember. Discipline. We may begin when you are ready, unless you have any questions."

Izaya nodded "Side effect of being raised by a bunch of girls, I'm pretty open with my feelings"

He bounded back before rolling on his heel and swinging the staff at Roth full force, aiming for his abdomen

His grip seemed more sure on the staff than it should have, holding on to the very end of it, he was able to push its reach to the very limits

Roth moves the staff out of the way, leaving himself open to the attack.

"I suppose they taught you how to fight too, eh? You hit like a girl," he said, not flinching as he allowed the blow to strike him. He spun his staff, taking a guarded step closer to Izaya. "Or do they hit harder, I wonder?," he asked with feigned curiosity.
