An alternate team that would be slightly more despicable than Team Rocket would be to have a group of poachers. Rather than having them capturing and selling them for profit, have them go out and hunt them down rare Pokemon for sport. This would put rare Pokemon in a very endangered state as they are not simply being removed from the ecosystem, but actually being killed. They have gotten bored of regular battling and wish to find another means of entertaining themselves. This of course means you would be dealing with people with little to no conscience regarding the morality of the situation, and would likely be very rich for them to get bored of battles. |

Most of the good ideas have been mentioned before. Dolling up wild pokemon to act as trainers themselves, incentivising battling by rewarding her with opportunities for new Pokemon. Drawing the player into conflict with other trainers, whether by force or by competition. Another easy way is to make badges much more valuable to the non-trainer trainer is by offering rewards that they would appreciate, like prize money, special abilities, or a greater selection of balls, or perhaps even the lowest form of that leaders signature pokemon, if sufficiently rare. In general, things that are neat to a trainer character, but deal makers for others. But one important thing to remember, don't force the player into something, or abnormally punish them for playing the game differently. The normal side-effects of not battling, mainly being weaker for potentially life-threatening ordeals, are fine, but do your best to not let this player feel picked on for not playing the game the way you want them to. That will only breed resentment, and potentially loose a player who, from the sound of it, is a player actually interested in building unique characters not out to become a murderhobo like their last six characters. And just imagine when they produce a well RP'd murderhobo! Cherish a good role-player, and they will be your best friend in a game where the story starts sputtering out, or something goes unexpectedly wrong. Help their characters feel relevant, so they are motivated to make the investment in an organic character again. However, you must also do it subtly, as making it obvious that you favor one character over another is a great way to make everyone else hate both that character and you, ruining the game for everyone. In short, make the player feel like they can play the way they want to in a way that doesn't bring them into conflict with the group, while also not making the game feel like it was MADE for that character. |

Ah! Sneaky brings up a good point. Just because they are a Pokémon doesn't mean they can't act as commanders on their own end. In more practical terms, a Mightyenya might issue marching orders to their Poochenya followers and make use of some of the Hunter Class. A Vespiquen can be expected to have a veritable hoard of Combee assisting it. Though, you can also go for more oddball combinations as well. I once had a Swablu that had coerced a local group of Roggenrola to collect fluff for it while it lorded over them like a king. Twas a magnificent bird. |
