Tabi Port has obviously modernised recently. Small cottages and equally-small shops are dwarfed by the new constructions; the Tabi Hotel, and the nearby Pokemon Centre.

Occupying what clearly is usually the village green is a large marquee, a large banner attached to the top reading 'Honi's First League Trainers, departing at 10am!' A big, bulky man stands outside the entrance to the marquee, checking IDs and only permitting the prospective trainers in; kids of various ages are emerging from the hotel at irregular intervals and being allowed in, often watched by tearful friends and family.

The mood is overall quite festive, with all manner of souvenirs being hawked by the entrepenurial villagers. It is now 9:50, and the last boat expected to arrive has just pulled into the docks, bringing with it the last few soon-to-be Trainers, who are now disembarking onto dry land.

You are all amongst these Trainers. What do you do now?

As the four of you make your way into the other section of the marquee, you find three tables set out. One table, at the end of the marquee, contains a series of cardboard boxes, while the other two have Pokeballs neatly lined up amongst them. A machine that resembles a Pokemon Centre PC stands in one corner, with two more lab-coat wearers attending to it. The assistant who poked their head out from behind the curtain stands in the approximate centre of the three tables, grinning with apparent glee before apparently remembering himself and trying to school his expression into a more professional one, with limited success. "Okay, you have to admit this is kind of cool!" He spreads his hands and does what is obviously meant to be a dramatic spin, but stumbles slightly and almost knocks one of the Pokeballs off its stand. Gathering himself, he takes a few steps towards the four of you. "I mean, think about it. You guys are going to be the first four International League Trainers to begin your journey! Are you going to race to be the first out?" He looks between the four of you like a child expecting to be told a secret. "Cause I would. I mean, you would be literally the first Trainer. The first international one, anyway...I mean, there are a lot of Trainers in the past who have just gone through the National League before we got accepted into the International League, but you guys know what I mean, right?"

You get the distinct impression that you might be here a while. Fortunately, one of the other lab assistants clears their throat noisily. "Oh! Right! Um, yes, so Professor Willow told me to keep things short, so...boxes!" He spins on his heels again and darts over to the boxes. "In each box is the equipment the League is sponsoring you for. One Pokedex, one manual for said Pokedex, 5 Pokeballs, 2 Potions, 1 bandage kit and a tent. Oh, and a carrier bag, because we need the boxes back." He rummages around in an arbitrary box and pulls out what must be a Pokedex, a small, rectangular object. "Okay, so to turn these on, you need to pull the two sections apart a little way. Officially, you're meant to do so carefully, but personally -" and again he looks like a child ready to tell someone a secret "- I think it's way cooler to flick them open." He demonstrates, holding the base of the Pokedex in one hand and giving it a sharp flick, causing the top half to slide out with an audible click! "Doesn't that just sound so cool?" the young man enthuses. "Anyway, once you've done that, there are three buttons. The centre one is the scanner. Point it at a Pokemon and it'll try to match things with the database. Takes a few seconds, because the Wi-fi around here is awful. If you catch a Pokemon, the scanner will work automatically, and use the Pokeball's data to connect to a different network and access the full information. Basically you get a little bit of information if you just point the Pokedex at something and a lot more if you catch it. The left-hand button brings up the list of Pokemon you have on hand, and the right-hand button brings up your contact list. Oh! That reminds me. Glad I didn't forget. Once you've chosen your box, you guys will need to give me your Pokedexes so I can sync them up with each other. Basically it means that they'll transmit any information one of you recieves to the rest of you, assuming you aren't, like, on the wrong side of the island or something crazy."

He pushes the Pokedex shut and stuffs it back in the box, gesturing to the tables holding the Pokeballs. "So this, obviously, is the main thing: the Pokemon. 24 different species here, and don't worry, you can choose the same one as someone else if you want. So...I think that was about everything the Professor told me to say, so...get choosing! I'm excited and I'm not even going anywhere!"

Upon further inspection, it seems that each Pokeball has a little nametag besides it to let you know what Pokemon is contained within.

"Oh man," Jeremy thought, looking at the other members of his trainer group; all younger and female. "Oh man, I'm gonna have to be the Team Dad, aren't I?" He began to worry. "Aww hell, at least in Team Rocket the girls had their own dorms where they went to handle their girl things and let me be. Now...Now am I gonna have to be involved? Am I gonna have to know about...things???" Jeremy was many levels deep into this worry spiral when the assistant started talking and snapped him out of it.

Being the 'first' sounded like something he wanted. Yeah, it was a bit lame considering it didn't really mean anything, but he'd come here to achieve something and that sounded like a decent start. Still, he didn't want to seem too keen about something so ridiculous in front of his new group so he kept mum, secretly admiring the assistant for his ability to be unabashedly enthusiastic about dumb things.

He listened keenly to the rest of the speech until finally it was time to choose his Pokémon. He half-focused on the name tags, really just scanning for a name he recognised so he could grab it and get out the door first. Finally his eyes rested on a familiar species name: Houndour. He was all too familiar with these mutts, having ran from his fair share of Law Enforcement and Security. Something about having one of his own resonated with him as fitting. It meant that he truly had left that life behind, because now he was running with the enemy.

Jeremy picked up the Pokéball and held it up at the Assistant. "Do I just take this, or...?"

After a quick look-around, Sibyl notices that there’s only one boy in the group. To her amusement, it appeared this point hadn’t gone unnoticed by said boy: she saw the worry in his face. She smirks to herself then turns to pay attention to the assistant talking. She was even further amused that the girl that caused the earlier fuss was with them.

She is then immediately taken aback by the exuberance of the assistant, moving slightly in reflex after the "spin", anticipating the Pokeball falling over.

As the assistant comes to talking about being the literal ‘first’ out the door, she raises her eyebrows in bemusement. It WAS a kinda silly thing to ‘achieve’ (if you could use that word), but she was feeling excited anyway, making it seem slightly less so. She keeps up the causal demeanor, however. Best not to look stupid.

She nods along as the assistant continues talking. After he finishes, she goes over to the table with the Pokeballs, reading the names. Ralts, Hoothoot, Houndour (just as the boy takes it), nothing catching her attention until she settles on one marked ‘Misdreavus’. Ghost type, mischievous... it seemed an appropriate choice. She has her hand over it when the boy asks the assistant his question. She looks up, waiting for the answer.

Isabella tries not to grin too widely at the exuberant aide, but it's kind of a losing proposition. Truth be told, he's really just acting like she feels anyway - she's so close now. The idea of racing to be the first out never occurred to her, but as soon as he mentions it she decides it's definitely something she wants to do.

She's not paying attention to the worry on the only boy's face. That's the sort of thing she can think about later. Frankly, she's already scanning the tables with half an eye even as the assistant explains the Pokédex, trying to decide what to start out with. She's already promised herself she won't just start out with a Natu again - though she wouldn't mind if she runs into one along the way. But she still wants a bird Pokémon; she's gotten too used to the advantages, and if nothing else it's an easy avenue for her preferred way to read the future.

Ah, there's a Hoothoot. That seems like a good choice. Nice set-up for her usual leanings contest-wise, too, if she remembers right. Just about as soon as the assistant's done talking she goes right for the ball labeled as Hoothoot, her fingers closing around it confidently. Then she heads over to pick out a box; she's darn near halfway there when the boy - she guesses he must be Jeremy - brings up a question she really should have thought of, and she hesitates long enough to hear the answer.

Abbey's eyes scan the other faces of the trainers coming forward, her own face mirroring the worry on Jeremy's. A boy? And we're going to be traveling together? ...Sleeping together!? Her face flushes a bright red as she hides behind her sketch book again. Her parents have always hired female staff; though whether this is due to concerns for Abbey or just coincidence is unclear. However, it meant the only contact she's had with members of the opposite sex up until now has been the rare visits from her father. Even more than people in general, boys were something of a mystery: both cause for concern and investigation. In that light, maybe this isn't such a bad thing after all.

That thought somewhat mollifying her embarrassment, she manages to peak at the last trainer in their group. Isn't that the girl that was picking a fight earlier? Another mixed bag, then. The girl's first impression hadn't been all that good and it causes Abbey to worry that she might cause in-fighting in their group. But if she was strong enough to challenge that other trainer, perhaps she could shore up Abbey's own shortcomings and lack of experience in that area.

Thankfully, the antics of the aide on the other side of the curtain is enough to dispel her worries, causing her to giggle helplessly at his overflowing enthusiasm. She listens attentively, with a smile on her face, as the aide explains their accommodations. Oh. They supplied us some Poké Balls. Maybe I should've spent my savings on more healing items instead... she muses to herself. It probably wouldn't matter too much. She's planning to catch as many Pokémon as she can, so the excess Poké Balls can only be helpful.

Then, finally, it's time to pick a Pokémon. She hasn't really put much thought into a Pokémon she would want, figuring that once she got this far, something would jump out at her. Sure enough, as her eyes scan the various Poké Balls, they settle on the one marked "Ralts". She only knew a little bit about this Pokémon; it was somewhat rare in her region (though the concept of "rare" is kind of silly, considering she's seen a legendary Pokémon with her own eyes) and she never saw one on her parents' land. But what she's read about it, from demeanor to abilities, seems like it would be a perfect fit for her. Reaching towards it, she picks it up and holds it to her chest with a happy smile. However, it falters a bit when the boy asks his question; she too looking over at the assistant, her grip tightening on the Poké Ball as if she doesn't want to let it go now that she finally has it.

"Oh, right!" the assistant exclaims, pulling out what appears to be a Pokedex of his own. "Yes, I need to scan my Pokedex over the Pokeballs, and then you need to do the same. Basically it's a trade. Oh, remember to put your Trainer ID card into your Pokedex first othewise basically nothing will work and that would be really awkward."

As he speaks, and beckons the four of you over to the exit to the marquee, a couple of the other lab assistants start tapping in commands to the PC machine, causing four further Pokeballs to materialise, presumably the replacements for the four Pokeballs you have just picked up.

"Oh, BTW," the assistant adds, as obviously an afterthought, "all the Pokedexes are different colours but they're all the same beyond that. But please don't take too much time picking one because otherwise I'll get in trouble with Professor Willow cause I'm meant to be keeping things moving quickly."

Jeremy gives a quick glance at the Pokédexes, looking for his favourite colour. He learned just recently that the colour red stimulates the brain, invigorating passion and drive. He sees a cerise Pokédex, decides that it's close enough, and picks it up. He sticks his Trainer ID into the slot and switches it on, then holds out his pokéball for the assistant to take.

Abbey nods in understanding, gathering up the offered supplies and a Pokédex. Normally she would just go for the standard red, but with Jeremy having already picked one of a similar shade, she goes for purple just so they won't accidentally mix them up later. Afterwards she follows the rest of the aide's instructions, offering the Poké Ball containing her new Pokémon so they can finalize the process.

Sibyl picks up the Pokeball she had her hand over, before similarly going over to take the supplies, and arbitrarily picks a Pokedex. She takes a blue coloured one, putting her ID in it to start it up, and takes some time seeing how to use it as she waits for the assistant to scan her shiny new Pokeball.

Isabella picks out a bright pink Pokédex, seeing as Abbey beat her to her other favorite color. Again, best not to get them mixed up - that would be pretty embarrassing if she ever traded a Pokémon and wound up giving it to Abbey by mistake.

She slots her ID into the Pokédex and joins the line to get her Pokémon transferred to her. She's practically bouncing on the balls of her feet, even more impatient now to be on her way.
