Tabi Port; The beginning of a grand adventure...

Tabi Port has obviously modernised recently. Small cottages and equally-small shops are dwarfed by the new constructions; the Tabi Hotel, and the nearby Pokemon Centre.

Occupying what clearly is usually the village green is a large marquee, a large banner attached to the top reading 'Honi's First League Trainers, departing at 10am!' A big, bulky man stands outside the entrance to the marquee, checking IDs and only permitting the prospective trainers in; kids of various ages are emerging from the hotel at irregular intervals and being allowed in, often watched by tearful friends and family.

The mood is overall quite festive, with all manner of souvenirs being hawked by the entrepenurial villagers. It is now 9:50, and the last boat expected to arrive has just pulled into the docks, bringing with it the last few soon-to-be Trainers, who are now disembarking onto dry land.

You are all amongst these Trainers. What do you do now?

The boastful boy pauses as Isaballa's comments filter through to him, and does indeed pay attention to her, stepping between the crowd to look down at her with something of a sneer. "I'm going to assume you don't know who I am, do you?" he asks with a smirk. "Tell you what. Once we get through all these irrelevant speeches and dramatism, and we have our Pokemon, I'll show you exactly what I've learnt. You and whichever poor saps you get lumped with."

Whatever he's about to say next is interrupted as a woman steps up to the lectern and taps the microphone a couple of times. She's dressed in reasonably smart clothes of her own, though the effect is spoiled somewhat by a lab coat worn over the top. "Good morning, everyone. If you would please take your seats, we can begin the presentation. Don't worry, it'll only take a few minutes." She gives a slight smile at this latter comment, apparently expecting the prevalent dislike of speeches amongst the crowd.

"To be continued," the boastful boy smirks to Isabella, ambling off to one side of the set of seats, his miniature entourage following him.

Jeremy hadn't had a chance to interject into the loudmouth's conversation before the red-haired girl did the honour. He hadn't heard what she'd said but he guessed it wasn't too kind, judging by the boy's reaction. "Seems like the showdowns are gonna start sooner than I thought," he mused. For now though he was intent on learning as much as he could about this journey, so he put the drama to the back of his mind and sat down for the speech.

Abbey's eyebrows spring up in concern at the inflammatory words bandying between the two trainers, but she quickly turns away as if to say "don't get me involved in that." She was here to make friends, not enemies.

Some of her apprehension dissolves as the woman takes the podium, releasing a breath she didn't know she was holding, and she smiles as she focuses her attention on the presentation.

Sibyl raises her eyebrows, amused with the fuss between those two. Looks like something worth seeing.

As the woman approaches the lectern, Sibyl turns away from the pompous boy's group and finds a seat for the speech, sitting down with her head propped up by her hand.

"You're on," Isabella mouths back under the noise as she finds a seat for herself. Like she's going to take that mess lying down. She isn't even considering whether whoever she gets grouped up with might have any objection to her finding herself a rival before they even get started. She halfway forgot they're even getting sent out in groups at all.

She plops down into her seat with a heavy sigh and directs her gaze to the podium. She hopes it's not going to be a very long speech.

"My name is Lauren Willow," the woman introduces herself, as everyone settles into their seats. "As you might have guessed, some people call me the Pokemon Professor. As promised, I will be brief, if somewhat blunt. You may be wondering why we have called 24 of you at once, when most established League officials only accept three to five Trainers at a time. The reason is simple. Statistics." She clicks a button on her lectern and six graphs pop up onto the screen behind her, each one (for the mathematicians amongst you) looking like an exponential decay.

"These graphs show, for each of the six international Regions, how the number of Trainers accepted each year correlates with the number of challengers at each Gym - not those that win, but the challengers themselves. As you may note, there is a substantial drop between the number of Trainers who embark on this journey and the number that get...well, anywhere." Willow shrugs. "That is why there are so many of you here. The League believes a significant number of you will withdraw from this challenge before really getting started. I apologise if my bluntness offends anyone, but I believe in straightforward honesty."

"Now, onto more undoubtedly interesting matters - your journey. You have been randomly assigned to groups of 4. By League rules, you must endeavour to stay in these groups while on the road, at least until you possess three badges or ribbons - more on those in a few moments. Settlements are safe, of course, but rather by intention there are wild Pokemon on the routes between these settlements, and naturally they pose a threat to the unprepared. The risk is minimal, but nonetheless we would prefer you remained in these groups."

"In a few moments, I will call each group up in turn to recieve their first Pokemon and equipment. Rest assured that there are enough Pokemon for all of you, and those that go first will not 'take the best ones.'"
She sketches air-quotes at this last remark. "Once you have recieved your Pokemon, you are free to do whatever you want. I suspect that a significant number of you intend on taking the League Challenge or the Grand Contest Circuit. The League Challenge is reasonably straightforwards, at least in theory. Collect all 8 Gym Badges, and attend Port Hasha for passage to the Elite 4. The Contest Circuit has a slight nuance, in that there are more than 8 Ribbons available to you; each Contest Hall has 6 Ribbons on offer - one for each type of Contest and a 'house special.'" Again with the air-quotes. "However, I will inform you in advance that you must collect Ribbons from 6 of the 8 different Contest Halls to qualify for the Grand Circuit."

She checks a piece of paper on her lectern and nods. "That is all I have to say, I believe." One of the lab-coat-wearers approaches her with a box, which she rummages inside and pulls out a piece of paper, which she unfolds and glances at momentarily. "Could the following four Trainers please make your way to my assistant behind the curtain to recieve your Pokemon and begin your journey: Abigail Padma, Isabella Celandine, Jeremy Hardcastle, and Sibyl Aldaine."

There is a bit of murmuring amongst the crowd, as people look back and forth for the four of you, as the curtain is moved aside by one of the bulky men and another lab-coat-wearing person pokes their head out from behind it, beckoning at...well, the crowd in general, but presumably intendedly the four of you.

Jeremy stands rather sheepishly, not fond of having all eyes on him. He nods politely (if not slightly awkwardly) at the Professor as he catches her eye while he makes his way towards the curtain.

Abbey listens intently, eyes widening at the statistics given by Professor Willow. People will... drop out? Why would anyone just give up on an opportunity like this? She does think she's being a bit harsh, though. While Abbey herself thinks challenging the League is a matter of course for this sort of journey, it's far from her primary goal and more a neccessary step in furthering her knowledge. She even planned to take in some contests while travelling (though she feels far from adequate enough to actively participate herself, for various reasons). So her expected pace isn't that high speed, comparatively, to people like the two heated trainers moments ago. It's kind of unfair to count people like that out, isn't it?

Regardless, that could all change depending on the nature of her groupmates. She is excited to meet all of them, especially since putting them into a group will force her to get over her anxieties and interact with them. But even more than that is the promise of the first Pokemon. Her own Pokemon. At the mention of them she issues a sharp intake of breath, waiting for her turn to be called.

But she isn't left waiting long and actually quails a bit when hers is the first name to be called, shrinking into herself a bit at all the eyes on her when she stands. At least she wasn't the only one, and seeing the similar reaction from one of her prospective groupmates puts her a bit more at ease as she follows after him toward the curtain.

Sibyl suddenly jolts back to sitting upright upon hearing her name. She stands up, looking around to see the others who had their name called, and approaches the curtain.

Isabella does her best not to show her surprise when she's called up so early, especially when it's clearly not alphabetical. Her eyes roam over the crowd as she stands up, picking out the others who are coming up to the stage - a tall guy, a girl with glasses, and another girl about her own age.

She tries not to just run up, despite her impatience. It's not like she doesn't have experience training, even if it's just at the amateur level. This isn't even really her first Pokémon, even if the little Natu she used at home technically belonged to her parents. Better if she just stays cool and confident... even though plenty of people probably noticed her sniping at the rich kid earlier.
