And if you are fighting a melee based pokemon ranged isn't huge. And overland can get pretty high. So unless you are starting on opposite sides of a giant arena it's rare that you can't get to melee at start. If you can't get to melee at start then 4 range isn't huge. If you are that far away you wouldn't want small ranged or melee. You'd want a long range. If you often get into 8-12m away combat then long range it and kite melee. But 1-4m isn't kiting range since overland is typically higher. You say "right on the opponent" but really within 6-8m is typically fine. You usually have at least 5overland and running shoes makes it six. You can get 9 with running shoes and master ranks. 6-9 overland helps melee fighters get in range. If the target is "running away" he is probably sprinting and dedicating full movement so your regular shift isn't going to catch up. Not to mention Rogue (the class discussed) has pursuit. "Has anti-melee abilities" would count in the "occasion" category. But at same time that's not super common. Extra damage (even small) is still a "always" bonus. Also melee always has flanking. and the point wasn't that range isn't useful, but that if you are going to be primarily melee anyways (or have no reason not to be) free damage is still free damage. Or do you ONLY use ranged pokemon and ranged weapons always. They have a use. You can argue small ranged is more useful, but it's not "always" useful. If in melee due to attacked by melee or because flanking or because no reason to kite due to smaller movement then I'm sure you'd find free damage still beats out on non-free. Disengage maneuver is at best 2m meaning it's not like you are disengaging out of a scyther's range. If we're praising ranged and "usefulness" it's not small vs short you should argue. Go long-ranged. Kiting and stopping running and "ambushes far away" benefit far more from 12m range than 1-4m. 1-4m you might as well be melee anyways. |
