Class and Type Swap; Alternative Energy and Move Sync Help

So I was talking with my friend about giving a Special Attacking Pokemon Power-Up Punch and making it its signature technique so it's a special move. With this, I said it would probably raise it's Special Attack instead of it's Physical Attack. He said that it only changes the class of the move and wouldn't change the effect. I said that makes no sense, especially since there is a part of the book that deals with Move Sync and says something like how a fire-synced electric move should burn and not paralyze. I also gave the example of Psyshock, a Special Psychic move that deals Physical damage. If made into a Physical Psychic move, it would only make sense for it to do Special damage.

Please tell me I'm not the only person who thinks it doesn't make sense for the effect of a move not to change with Move Sync and Alternative Energy?

Personally I agree with you, strictly speaking Alternative Energy isn't Move Sync and the text does not mention any additional changes to effect, so if he wants to play very strictly by the book I can see his point, but Signature Move actually costs more Tutor Points than Move Sync (although I am not sure it is supposed to? It only seems to refund half of its cost if removed, which is strange) does so I think it would be strange to treat them too differently.
I don't think it would break the game or anything, not really any reason to not let you do this, but at the end of the day it is sort of the GM's prerogative.

Well it's not the GM, I still need to talk with him, but I brought the idea up to a friend when we were talking about pokemon, and knowing my gm it doesn't seem like he'll be that strict, considering some of the things that have happened.

Ah, in that case I'd say it's a perfectly reasonable suggestion.

I agree with changing the move to fit its new category. While technically the book doesn't say change that, mechanically it makes perfect sense to change it.

RAW, he's right, special Power Up Punch would still raise Attack on hit. Obviously, that's pretty silly, so it'd be reasonable to rule that it swaps which stat it raises (just as it'd be reasonable to say that special Metal Claw raises SpAtk, or physical Charge Beam raises Attack, etc). Talk to your GM ahead of time, of course.

RAW only Move Sync can actually change the effect, however in practice Signature Move effect updates are much more reasonable and balanced IMHO compared to some Move Sync requests.

Ice Type Zap Cannon w/ auto-freeze, I'm looking at you.
