Hi there, so I recently discovered PTU after talking with a friend and we decided to get a group together to start playing. The actual campaign won't start for at least a few weeks, but my friend and I wanted to demo several aspects just to make sure we understand everything before starting officially. What do you recommend we try? I was thinking of giving starter pokemon, going through a route, fighting some trainers, catching some pokemon, and maybe ending it with a big fun gym battle. Any thoughts, tips, or suggestions? Thanks!

I'd take a look at this blog post: GM Advice: Your First PTU Session for lots of good ideas from the devs.

I recommend taking a hard look at pokemon typically considered 'weak'. The tabletop conversion has been very kind to lots of different pokemon, like Abra and Rattata to name a few. Also, instead of having a battle for the capture opportunities, maybe some other fun event like hide and seek.

That being said, what type of experience is your group looking for? Are they looking to have the games simulated in tabletop format? What type of setting are you going for?

I made the region kind of a mix between Kanto and Hoenn, and I think I'm leaning towards making the structure like the anime with its episodic nature, and the games' battle mechanics.

The anime is a good source for lots of interesting encounters. Think about how interesting the episode where metapod gets taken away, or the Orange Island gym challenges. That's all stuff that translates really well into a good table top experience. Keep in mind most encounters should focus on including the entire group instead of the typical 1v1 style shown in most league battles in both mediums.

Also a thing to remember is that it can help player enjoyment and immersion to have an overarching plot beyond just the badge circuit to latch onto. Something that all of their characters would potentially have a stake in.
