Flynn finally hops down from the caravan and starts retreating slowly from the sinkhole, managing to keep remarkably steady on the shifting ground. "I know," he says to Kurt, now standing on his shoulder, clinging to it, "don't worry, whatever this is, I'll protect you." As he reaches the main group, he turns to look to the sinkhole and braces himself for whatever's about to happen. |

"Got a bad feelin' about this," Mystery mutters to Shane, "I'd say let's take 'bout...oh, twenty steps back. Or more, ya know. More is good." Shane knits his eyebrows together in a frown, but follows his friend's advice. They back off a very good distance away from the sinkhole, almost to the other edge of the wagons. |

As the trio begin to realize the situation they've found themselves in the world around them becomes very, very quiet. The sounds of chirping insects and the predators of the night have completely ceased. The other members of the circus troupe have noticed this and become subconscious participants as they look around curiously, either out beyond their ring of coaches, or at the illuminated sinkhole without making a sound. Even the wind seems to have died down, though that must surely be coincidence. Only the campfire crackles on unimpeded. It's as if the world is a hushed crowd, waiting for the curtain to rise on some grand performance with baited breath. The suspense in the air is palpable, and though the silence persists for a fleetingly short while, it feels like an eternity. If the world above is the audience, then the world below is the cast and crew, and the disaster must go in. In an instant the silence is shattered. The noise is deafening, the loud rumbling, punctuated by terrible sounds from the fissure in your midst and the cracks and splintering sounds as caravans come free. You can feel the deep and terrible rumbling in your bones, you can hear it in your bones. It's incredibly difficult to stay on your feet, much less try to focus on something, but something in the distance is abundantly clear. Wind-blown dunes and hills of sand are collapsing, like little clumps that sink away when a prospector pans for something precious. Just as you feel like it could never end, the shaking begins to abate. The world begins to settle down and calm. The circus manager picks himself up from where he fell on his rump. "Glad that's ov-" The world erupts into noise and shaking once again, though this time much worse. To your heightened and panicked senses, the situation feels like it plays out in slow motion. A loud noise issues from the fissure, almost like the sound of bone snapped clean in half. Then the land beneath you is jerked, suddenly and forcefully, away as the fissure widens like a gaping maw. Bill and Shane, standing closesr to the fire, are on the west side of the fissure, while Flynn is situated just on the east side, where his caravan exited. The two sides of the fissure are thrust apart even as the ground slides along the length of the fissure. The links between the caravan are snapped like matchsticks with a hardly audible pop. Many topple in the shaking, the sounds of breaking glass accompanying their falls, and one-The Amazing Rando's Carriage-catches fire, but the shaking carries on unimpeded. The ground where the fissure was seems to have fallen away into a dark abyss, and the sand around them flows like water over the edge and into this terrible void. ((Athletics or Acrobatics checks to keep your feet throughout this disaster.)) |

William grows exceptionally nervous as the surroundings suddenly falls quiet, and he quickly mutters: "Sweet Uxie, guard us." Then the quake starts, and Bill manages to stand upright for just about 3.1 seconds before falling down, an inarticulate cry escaping his lips. Just as he thinks the tremors are over, the director has to go and tempt fate. The second, heavier quake hits him and starts tearing open the ground before him, the mere moments somehow seeming to last for ages. "Sweet mother Mew, stand by us and grant us strength. Great shaker Groudon, show us mercy. Mighty Victini, keep our fate." He quickly pumps out as many prayers to as many deities he can think of, hoping one of them is willing to lend a helping hand (or at least, it makes him feel somewhat better). |

Mystery yelps in surprise and fear as the quakes begin. Shane immediately falls over flat. It's not even worth getting up. The ground is going wild, Mystery is running around wide-eyed like a maniac, and Shane's sense of balance was never great anyway. So instead of even trying to rise, he lays on the ground and clutches at it futilely, hoping beyond hope that he backed away far enough before the ground started shaking. |

Flynn rides the first quake, having been prepared for something to happen, but let his guard down afterwards, just in time for the second quake to knock him and Kurt down. |

The first tremor sent Bill falling flat on his bum, though Shane performed a much less graceful face-plant. The second served to send Flynn, Kurt, and the vast majority of the circus troupe sprawling. Only Mystery remained afoot as the ground eroded into flowing rivers of sand. Fortunately for most, the rocks that had been used as impromptu seats around the campfire provided some stability, and Flynn found himself in a similarly stable situation. Not so for Shane, whose dive had left him in what was quickly becoming a raging torrent of sand. He would have been swept away if not for his canine companions courage. Mystery leapt forward, perching on a rock and managing to get his teeth around Shane's collar, barely holding him up against the force of the flows. As the ground continued to shake and shudder, three pillars of pale blue light pierced the darkness, each enveloping a different individual and their pokemon; Shane & Mystery, Flynn & Kurt, and Bill & Nikola. The light is intense, casting everything in a blue-tinged hue, and within the light little arcs of lightning play painlessly across the illuminated. You begin to hear a thrumming noise. Low at first, but building with intensity in time with the light. Eventually the noise drowns out even the earthquake until the only things you can perceive are intense blue light and the thrumming noise. Then, suddenly, you lose consciousness. ((This concludes the prologue! Chapter I will begin shortly, and with it, I need a perception and survival check.)) |
