Who would’ve thought? A circus, out here, in the middle of the desert. Well, a circus in transit anyway. They were all packed up in a variety of caravans of varying shape and color. The caravans had been drawn up in a circle for the night, a simple protective measure to keep wild pokemon away from the people inside. As far as those people went, well, they came in all shapes, sizes, and colors. The sheer variety of the actors made two otherwise unassuming individuals stand out. They’d both come to the circus by chance, drawn to the loud commotion in the otherwise silent desert, and been welcomed to join their motley crew to stay the night. The two newcomers had become topics of interest around the campfire as night fell and the blistering air took on a deceptive chill. One newcomer, William “Bill” Malachite, was responsible for the fire, using one of his instruments of techno-sorcery to start it with just a flick of his wrist. The other newcomer had proven no less interesting. It turned out that Shane Wilson was mute, but he just so happened to have a talking Houndour to make up for it. Shane “That’s a real impressive Houndour you’ve got,” one of the strong men said to Shane. “Yeah, if you could teach ‘im to talk without moving ‘is lips, you could be the next great ventriloquist,” the other finished. One of the stage hands butted in. “Yeah, but do you make it a show about a talking ‘mon ventriloquist, a ventriloquist that can ‘make his ‘mon talk’, or keep the ‘mon behind the scene and use props?” “Hmm, good point,” the first strong man said, seizing on the idea with an expression of deep thought etched on his chiseled features. Bill “You know, with a little showmanship you could be a great magician,” one of the performers said. “Yeah, ‘The Amazing Rando’ over there could teach you how to grab the crowd, you say a few ‘magic words’ and bam! You’re on your way to Unova,” another said encouraningly. ‘The Amazing Rando’ simply scowled in his top hat, clearly insulted at the idea of training an apprentice. “Mah-jeek is not somezing jou can teach! Jou must ‘ave ze spark!” About this time one of the managers started waving his hands at the group. He’d been listening to the radio play in the background for the better part of the night, but something had caught his attention. “Ssh. SSH, Quiet,” he hissed, turning up the radio. "And Today in the News,”, the anchor began, "Doctors have identified a new disease as the cause of the recent outbreak in the Hoenn region. The origins of the disease are unclear, but doctors are confident that the disease has been contained. Thus far, the symptoms have proven mild and non-fatal. A travel advisory remains in effect." “Well, that cancels the Hoenn tour,” he said to a chorus of ‘Aww’ and ‘Boo’. “Quiet!” "In local news; a high ranking team rocket thug has escaped from prison in the Orange Isles and fled into the deserts of Mandarin Isle. A manhunt is ongoing. Police advise caution, the man is considered armed and extremely dangerous." “Alright fellas, you know what that means. Time to make sure everything’s locked up. Hop to,” the manager said, getting up and ushering the group off with much grumbling, leaving just Bill and Shane around the fire. ((Perception Check to look around.)) Flynn Flynn had retired to his coach and hadn’t heard much. There was the distant hub-bub around the campfire and the mumbles and groans that must only mean ‘work’. Otherwise, the night was very quiet. That is, until something struck the side of his coach loudly, suddenly, and forcefully. The planks shuddered briefly, then everything went quiet again. ((Perception Check)) |

Bill looks up from his notes as some of his companions are talking and laughs somewhat embarrased. It might not have been a smart idea to show of like that, but to be fair, I really wanted to see if Cinderstaff still worked, days after I have charged it. Ah well, bearing the consequences of our actions, I suppose He shakes his head at the notion of him becoming a showman. "Believe me when I say I would not make a good stage magician. I am much more at ease on my own, working on one of my inventions or simply messing with shards than I would be on stage, in front of a large audience." He shudders slightly at the idea. However, he nods knowingly when Rando explains to the others the struggles of the arcane arts, completely missing the fact that he is talking about stage magic rather than actual magic. "Oh, believe me when I say that I know the hardships of magic studies. I have been studying the arcane arts for years now, and yet I cannot even cast the simplest of active cantrips. No, my branch of magic lies in crafting, empowering Shards to give them special abilities, usually to aid the holder of the jewel." As the group around him disperses, he momentarily goes back to his notes, though he quickly lays them aside again, giving up on the search for the dark tower for now. Instead, he looks around for a moment, somewhat nervous due to the broadcasting, and pets Nikola, who had been dozing by the fire, on the head, reassured by his friend's companionship. He looks over to the only other occupant of the fire circle, the other boy that had joined the caravan today. Deciding to actually try and make an effort in being sociable, he asks: "If you don't mind me asking, what brings you two out in the desert?" |

Shane smiles tolerantly at the muscle-bound man's observations and the discussions that follow. Really, it hadn't been him who had taught Mystery to speak. He was more of an observer and student to the process than an actual teacher. He patted the Pokemon on the head, half-waking him from a pleasant doze, and watched the world spin around him. More specifically, he watched the people around him, studying how they moved, interacted, and lived with each other. He let out a contented sigh, one of the few sounds he was still capable of making. Then, the manager calls for action and the circus troupe heads off about its appointed task. The fire is nice and warm. Shane begins to doze off, leaning back against Mystery's side for support. Then, the person who had so kindly lit the fire in the first place says something. Shane sits up, blinking, and nudges Mystery awake. The Houndour clears his throat. "Not much, ya see. Wand'ring round and lookin' fer trouble. Lookin' at the Gym Challenge too, though I'd be doin' all the work there!" He chortles and leans into Shane's hand as he scratches him behind the ears. "Ooh, that's the spot!" |

Flynn jolts awake and upright at the sound of the impact, as does Kurt, causing them to accidentally hit their heads together with an audible KLONK. After shaking it off, they start getting up slowly. Then a groan from the impacted planks spooks Flynn and he instinctively leaps onto a large suitcase nearby, landing in a low crouch. With a *Fwt* sound, Kurt teleports onto his back, ready to mentally blast anything that attacks. |

"Oh, yeah, the Orange League. I am technically competing in that as well, I suppose, though that's not the reason I am out here in the desert," William holds up his notes, writing facing towards Shane, though he would have trouble reading it from that distance, "this is why I am here. A dark tower, filled with unknown knowledge, is rumoured to stand somewhere in this desert, and I got it in my stupid mind to go and try and find it, with nothing but a few rumours and vague hints to guide my path. There is little chance of me actually finding it, unless I trip over it on our way. Though, I suppose that I might as well take advantage of our current situation and gather up some Shards. Deserts are exceptionally good spot to find them, for one reason or another..." he trails off, aware that he is talking too much about some rather dull occult stuff. Instead, he starts rummaging through his backpack, carefully getting out two longish thin metal rods that infold on themself, like the antenna on a radio. A dowsing rod, usually a solid metal or wooden rod imbued with magic to make it resonance with the special Shards Bill uses to craft, he had instead opted to actually take two radio antennas and imbue the magic into this, for ease of travelling. Though he unfolds them and starts testing them, he does not yet go out and dowse, worried something might be hidden in the shadows. While he is waiting for ... something to happen, he starts talking to Shane again. "I have been meaning to ask, how did you learn your Houndour, Mystery was it, to talk? It is not common to see a talking Pokémon around these parts ... or any parts for that matter. That is, if you do not mind telling me." |

Shane & Bill Bill prattles on about his inventions and studies, fiddling with his dowsing rods, completely oblivious to the goings on around him, Shane's keen senses notice something in the dim firelight. A shifting in the sand, like it's flowing with a mind of its own, the noise barely audible over the crackling of the fire. As Shane looks off into the distance, following the shifting line, he notices it appears quite long and points towards one of the caravans that no one is standing near. Flynn For a long while the room is quiet, only the occasional shout from outside breaking the silence. Then you hear the sound of sand shifting. You can't be sure where it seems to originate from, but it's definitely outside the caravan. |

At the mention of the magic words 'dark tower', 'rumors', and 'unknown knowledge', Shane gets a very interested look on his face. He leans forward eagerly and tries to read what's on the page. Mystery grins at Bill. "Well don't that sound fun? If'n ya find it, be sure to bring us along fer the ride! We're paranormal investigat'rs, see, though not too many take that stuff ser'ously so we mostly stopped talking about it when we meet new people. Ya see..." Shane's eyes wander for a little bit and he starts when he notices something strange in the sand. He whips out his Dex and types something onto the screen. Interrupting Mystery, he holds it up for Bill to read. 'Something wrong with one of the wagons. Check it out?' |

Keeping crouched, Flynn hops off the suitcase and scurries over the caravan's door, Kurt staying on his back all the way. "Can you sense anything, Kurt?" He asks as he looks out of the door, then out and around the caravan, trying to find what was making the noise. |

Flynn Kurt shakes his head slowly. Without any idea what to look for, or where, it's impossible to pin anything down. As you open the door the sound of shifting sand intensifies. It sounds like it's coming from underneath your coach. Shane You see the door of the caravan open and someone poke his head out to look around, but it's hard to make out any features from this distance. |

Bill is somewhat suprised to learn that he is in fact travelling with someone interested in the occult, as that was not something that happened often. As reads the text, his hand goes to the device attached to his belt. It looks the most like a simple small taser, imbedded with yellow gems, but it was in afct one of his more succesful bouts of technomancy, an originally rather rundown taser that had broken down some time ago, repaired for parts, with the accu replaced with some Yellow Shards, which were treated so they would store and increase electrical energy, as long as the device was powered daily by an electrical source like Nikola. He nods at the question and carefully gets up, detaching the device from his belt and taking it in his right hand. He quickly rummages through his backpack and gets out another short wand akin to his Cinderstaff, though this one is a bit longer and thicker, and inlaid with an orange gem instead of a red one. "In case we need some extra light." Armed with the Spark Booster in one and the Starshine in the other hand, he waits for Shane (or Mystery) to explain what he saw. |
