So I'm running a RL game that is being slowly drawn out into a comic. It will get posted as time gos on but for now im looking for feed back, On things I have done. I only have one player, my wife, while other people pop in from time to time, my friends and brother, it tend to just be me and her. As such I would like to bounce a few ideas of people to see what others think. I done a little of this in the chat box but hey, why not here too. Tonight at the cost of 2500 poke what is around $50 if we are using the 1 to 50 rule from the books she purchased for her chikorita A trinket that gave it fire immunity from a stall that an occultist had set up at the side of the road. Except That it was really just a useless bit of coloured glass with an led light. She also "talked" the seller into trading a 10+ damage, that really dosnt do anything for the rest of her money, 1600 poke. Have you done anything like this? Was I beening too mean by tricking her hero? |

I think that depends largely on how you set it up. If this was a shadier seller, ok sure, makes sense, especially if part of the tone of the game is some underhanded business. If this was just a sunlit market in the middle of the road that also sold happy charms, perhaps it seems a little off tone, but if this was a stand at twilight with a shifty dude behind the counter, it could make sense. It could be alright if she failed an occult education check beforehand and couldn't tell that it was just colored glass. If you feel it was off tone, perhaps it really just makes the mon resist fire damage, or offers some sort of damage reduction against fire. It really all depends on how you described the situation. |

Yeah, did you let her make a check of any kind to ascertain the veracity of the seller's claims? Even a Tech Edu check could have worked, to tell the color was just from an LED light. And yes, I do think you're being a bit too mean to her, especially since she's your only player and thus doesn't have co-players who can share their money with her for other necessities. Unless this is setting up a plot point, I really don't see what the point of doing all that to your player is, besides aggravating her. |

It makes the game more interesting by showing that not everyone can be trusted, it adds some depth to NPCs and makes the world feel more alive. I don't find this to be much of a problem unless the player specifically rolled to appraise the item to find no bad effects for the trinket, and then suddenly the DM said that yes there was. It kind of does add a plot if the player chooses to pursue the merchant which opens many doors for the DM. |

Unless you're planning on following it up as part of a plot point, kind of a jerk move. PtU by necessity is a very items-heavy game, and if you're playing solo even more so, so it's important to have confidence that if you buy Poke Balls or Potions then they're going to work. If you don't have any plans to follow it up, as Lockdown said, you're not getting anything out of this besides aggravating her. |

There was a guile and intuition check vs. she didn't beat the con artist but I made it sound as shady as I could. The person spoke with a Romanian accent and a NPC that she was with tried to warn her but her shy nature prevented her for doing little more then mumbling. I'm pushing her to use her nidoran who has a plus 10 attack item so she can see that they are fake before she ends up cooking her starter Next session she may go up against a bug ace in an official battle. However he is cheating and covering the Arena in string shots before the battle starts. he has also covered the gaps in the trees to make it darker so the don't show up in the sunlight . Thanks to the bug ace his bugs won't get stuck thanks to string shot. If he is caught he will be kicked out the league for cheating mind you. |

If it does create a plot or advance one it isn't a jerk move? What if the GM wanted to use this to pursue or create a plot but the player refuses to follow it? Or what if it was supposed to be a random encounter with no intention of future growth, but the player pushes to make it so? I'm sorry but this logic doesn't make sense. In this specific event it was completely the fault of the player. She was tempted with the concept of an incredible item at a low cost, and despite the shady looking character and environment the item was too good to be true and the player fell for it. Nigerian Prince anyone? If the GM had this happen in an official Poke'Mart with the clerk selling her this item, then yes I might agree that he was being a meanie bo beanie.
Yes, but this item isn't a Poke'Ball or Potion, items that are reliable. A trinket that gives complete Fire immunity and a +10 damage item? If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. She lost all her money but I stand firm on my position in saying that it's the characters fault for being naive. |

It seems like, from the explanation of the gym tactics, that you're trying to drive home a theme of 'people are dishonest and will take advantage of you'. If that's what you're going for, fair point. If it's not...well, my character would be miffed and promptly go try and get my money back...loudly and with violence if necessary. If you, as a gm, didn't provide an outlet for that, then I might be miffed as a person. |

If she wants to hunt down the gypsy she will have to find them. As they would of moved on. I would like to think that she will find them and that they will con her again. |
