Because humans are the ones that call pokemon types by names, I think they filed pokemon like Sableye in the same as Gastly, because of its weaknesses or resistances (mostly resistances). But ghosts like Yamask or Shuppet are specifically ghosts, as expressed in the Pokedex. Just my thoughts. |

Old thread, sorry to necro, but this is just my thought. I'm of the opinion that Ghost types are just that. A type. They are a human categorization based on what we can observe. So we say something is a Fire type because it has flame like characteristics and can typically learn/use fire like moves more easily/quickly. Same with Bug, Dark, Steel, Rock, etc. Including Ghost. They seem to have more ghostly qualities and can easily and more quickly learn and use moves and abilities that we associate with ghosts. As for the Pokedex entries that seem to specifically state certain pokemon are literally dead people, I ask you this. Why are there so many pokemon researchers? Because even though we have come up with a fairly accurate system of categorization, a culture that revolves completely around these magical creatures, we don't really know all that much about them. Every single researcher can tell you one or two tidbits of info about something but when pressed their response in the end is generally "We don't really know, there is still so much about Pokemon we have yet to learn." So, I posit that, the pokedex is wrong. That the entries that indicate specific pokemon are literal deceased humans are actually misunderstandings by flawed humans. |

I mean, the source says that they're dead things that came back to life. Pretty obvious what they are, m'dude. |

Sources have been proven wrong before. Lots of things in the Pokédex have been found to be inaccurate and sometimes flat-out impossible. I am also firmly in the camp of "Ghost-types are not literal ghosts". Your type doesn't literally define you. Water-types are not literally water. I think these things emulate spirits to varying extents depending on the species but a Phantump is no more a ghost than a Dhelmise is. I agree that the only real ghost ever encountered was the restless Marowak, and it was a being apart from all classification. |

Ghost-types are whatever your setting needs them to be. In my old campaign, Fairy-types were literally aliens from other planets. Do what you want. |
