In one game I'm in I've got a shiny Bibarel who decided he was an Ork. As in WH40K-style WAAAAUGH. Considering he evolved during a fight and was even rather aggressive as a Bidoof, it's not too much of a stretch. But you haven't seen weird until you've seen a Bidoof bouncing up and down on all fours chanting "Ere-we-go!" in poke'speak.

Then there's Roller, my Russian-accented spheal who is more than happy to call people out when he thinks they're being stupid, going so far as to congratulate one of the other players on
foul language
Same game as these, I have a Foonguss named Fern who is addorable curious and enthusiastic about most things. She's still a bit confused about how humans work, exactly.

In another game, I have a Carnivine who is the last survivor of an incident that cost her trainer his two other Pokemon, and she takes a very protective, gentle attitude towards him.

There's a Cottonee that's secretly plotting to be a mad scientist, a Magnezone who wears a fedora and it looks damn good on him, a Victini that trash-talks in Dutch, a Lampent that became a certified public accountant...

...yeah, I've made some very interesting characters over the years.

My campaign is very heavy on Pokemon-human social interactions, and due to the kinds of characters my players made, every Pokemon they pick up comes from an "event" as opposed to just catching them in the wild. (So far.)

Violet has picked up all of her Pokemon from a chain of non-League sanctioned Pokemon Shelters, full of the least adoptable Pokemon. She has...

-A very old Eevee who is very prideful and refuses to be treated like a pet. He was owned by, and subsequently abandoned by, many trainers before her. He is also mute and unable to evolve with evolution stones (according to what one of those trainers told her.)
-An unusually small Metapod that was abandoned by its peers, and is extremely cute and expressive for a Metapod. She routinely stringshots people on Violet's command, just to cause trouble, and is able to use Stringshot to move at high speeds (think Spiderman travel using inertia.)
-A Hoothoot that was severely injured by an abusive trainer, and suffered nutrition deprivation at a young age. Due to this abuse, she has only one leg, a droopy eye, and is *extremely* fluffy, constantly shedding feathers everywhere. Despite this, she loves and trusts people.

Another trainer, Timmy, is a Pokemon Rights Activist who believes keeping Pokemon in pokeballs is slavery. (This has caused some party tension, haha.) He travels with...

-A slowpoke who once saved him from falling down a well. (This came up comically from a "Timmy fell down the well" joke.) Her name is Cletus, because he wasn't that great at telling Pokemon genders. Like most Slowpoke, she is slow on the uptake-- but when Timmy is in danger she can move at astounding speeds! (Though her reaction isn't always as good so sometimes she will run into things.)
-A Rufflet, strangely out of place in the Johto region. Somehow, it is every bit as aggressive as its brethren, but a thousand times more devious. He is quick to analyze situations, and manipulate people. Also extremely passive aggressive, doing things like putting tacks/sharp burrs into people's sleeping bags or shoes when they upset him. Recently, he blackmailed one of the party members into buying him festival food, and when he returned he had a whole trail of items he'd extorted from the villagers. (And a Caterpie.)

Ricky, who traveled from Kanto to prove that there are rare fossils in the Johto region, and is the most typical trainer character-- he's tried to catch things and it's gone interesting places.

-Carl, his Squirtle, is extremely serious and mission oriented. He will take any mission on, any time, and preform his duty fully. Unfortunately, he's very gullible, so anyone can pretty much convince him anything is a mission. This causes complications for obvious reasons.

well, in the campain I am starting, there are plenty of interesting pokemon.

For example, there is a Mewtwo (based on the movie mewtwo) who wanted to become a trainer so much that he aquired an Avatar form. Doing so however at a very early age (was only 10 years old at the time) had him loose acess to his pokemon form (and abilities), and now has to level up as a "telekinetic", till a certain level (set by me), in order to aquire his pokemon powers back (end game sub-plot, with some changes to the "Ussurper").

There is a Gengar that loves to do deadly pranks... it's not that it's evil, it just lacks the rational judjment that his pranks can have bad effects, because, as a ghost, he can usually levitate or phase out of the effects of his pranks (witch makes him not think that others can't do what he does). However he is a genious pokemon, capable of speaking human tong through telepathy, and usually blends into the Shadow of it's trainer (the mewtwo I spoke about), as it doesn't like small places (like poke balls).

There is also a Lucario who is a bit of an otaku. When he goes in a town, he will beg his trainer to buy him manga or action figures, and his biggest dream is to turn into his "super Lucario" form (dragonball referance/a very good plot device to introduce mega evolution).

There is an Espeon who dreams to be a contest champion... however, her trainer is a league battler and has no time for contests. Espeon loves her trainer, but will eventually have to chose between her career or her trainer.

I think the key to making pokemon with their own personality it to either adjust them to people archetypes that suit them, (an alakazam who wants to become an academic, and tries to invent a machine that would grant him a more human form, in order to be taken seriously by his colegues/ a slaking that is your typical playground bully in the pokemon day care center) or give them a personality that is contradictory and a bit shoking for their appearance (A Charizard that grew up as a noble's pokemon, who acts as a gentleman, and has a habbit of getting out of his pokeball at 5 o'clock each day to drink tea/A Machoke that is a real couch potato, and instead of his species muscles he has a round belly and likes beer and pizza more than a Snorlax.) You can also work on virtually imposible dreams and then make them happen somehow (a digglet that wants to become a pilot, someday meets his trainer, a scientist, who makes him a scecially designed device for it to fly). :)

That's an option, but I wouldn't say the key. Otherwise you're better off just making them a human in my opinion.

Campaign never really took off, but I was fond of the endlessly pissed off Sandshrew my pc caught with a pack of smokes and an ambush one game. First time My character had to walk on eggshells with a Pokemon, though she got on well with the surprisingly chill Carvahna I caught later.

Geoff, the Bulbasaur, was one of the players' starter. Geoff was very strong willed and sneaky, while the trainer character was pretty weak and indecisive. So, Geoff refused to be balled, and mostly ignored attack orders. He still helped the party quite a bit, but he did it on his own terms. He also stole a knife from a fallen bad guy early on, and became even more of a little terror.

There was a Piplup with a superiority complex and the Pack Mon capability, who would slap people and Pokemon alike when it felt it wasn't receiving enough respect.

An Eevee with Sleep Talk, who would randomly Headbutt things in its sleep. It's father, a jolteon, would cause lightning storms every time it slept.

Reverse Usurper! That's very similar to the character I'm running now. Previously Giratina, God of Death, he got sealed in human form by higher powers for being a horribly irresponsible and immature deity.

He has a Duskull that is proud to serve the once-and-future dark lord. It has an enhanced Perception and goes around everywhere invisible, observing as his eyes and ears. It is always watching ...

There are two Onix in a game I play in, the first is the baby of the second who just matured but still holds on to his 'hugging' from his baby days. Essentially whenever he wants he will bind someone because that is how he hugs. His mother is a really old Onix who is slowly dying from rust as she sleeps in acave with her mate's, a Steelix, remains that is capable of aura pulse that acts as guardian on the mountain she lives on.

A Rotom eventually named Loki who was a general in Giratina's army that refused to do anything his character, a martial artist, would say until he managed to convince him he could just leave him in his ball for the rest of his natural life but he was trying to be nice despite his crimes. He was caught in its attempts to open up a portal to the Distortion world so Giratina could come to the real world. After his own little quest in which he fought a Skitty, two Unown, and Oidgey as well as meeting up with the other genrals working to release Giratina and deciding his trainer was a good man and that he should fight with him, especially with the threat to the legendaries in the region.

There was also a glitched Slowpoke who owed his allegiance to Missingno and went to join one of his puupets and keeping secrets from the trainer so as to further Missingno's own goals. IN the same campaign there is a Resurrected Growlithe(Ghost type added) that died in a character's backstory who was in contention to become an Outer God and ran from that to join his trainer to try and hide away from the responsibility.

I'm playing Shin for our Sandmen campaign. One of the more... Entertaining bits of chaos was when the party came upon a flock of Chatot. Our resident swearbear, Nicola (under the assumed guise of Alex Carmana) decided to get the birds riled up.

Fowl Mouthed Birds

We would later end up catching one of them later, and then the bird ended up being 'gifted' to Shin. He continues to swear like a sailor, though he's found ways to weedle his way into Shin's heart. I ended up having him named Aniki-Tori, or Brother Bird. Because he's awesome.

Rokku, Shin's Geodude is a little badass. He has a reputation of being absolutely merciless in battle and has scored more unnecessary critical hits and knockout blows than any other character. All while sporting a stoner personality.

There is also a Type-Shifted Mime Jr. named Mene in the party. He is a Fairy-Ghost Type Pokémon, which is a fantastic typing to have. However, on the flipside he's also exceedingly shy and has built up a reputation of being a scaredy cat. It was initially scared of Shin until he recruited a bit of help from another member of the party Phi. It's because of Mene that I'm going to have his character shift from being a mostly a combat oriented character to being a mixed bag with Mentor thrown on top. Connecting with his Pokémon is more important to him than fighting, and therefore connecting with Mene is one of his first priorities.
