The branded mechanic is, for the most part, your typical "Deal with the Devil." There are countless examples of these online; just look at TV Tropes. Here's an in-game example... Jeff runs a game where death is a real possibility for Pokémon and Trainers alike. One of his players, Alex, end up getting her beloved Wartortle killed. Based on how her character has developed, this loss drives Alex to try and bring Wartortle back to life. Since Jeff's setting allows it, Alex ends up meeting Giratina. A deal is struck, and Giratina brings Wartortle back. However, due to the contract, Alex must now perform a significant favor to Giratina, such as starting a war between two countries. Until she meets her end of the bargin, Alex's body will slowly decay, eventually turning her into a zombie. Custom brands can certainly work, but it's best to make sure that the Branded Player knows what they're getting into. |

Here are my own two examples of a Branded deal: A girl nearly dies in an unexpected catastrophic disaster, unforeseen even by the master of death himself. In a show of benevolence, he prevents her death (mechanically by giving her the ability Defy Death); however, he is bound by his own rules of a contract, so he takes her as one of his hands in the mortal realm, and the girl becomes a wandering mercenary. Should their contract ever be terminated somehow, she would instantly take on the wounds she would have died from. This is more an example of using Branded as an alternate version of Touched. I gave this character a Mark of the Damned to make it known that her patron was Giratina. A naive channeler crosses paths deep underground with a Zygarde searching for legendary prey. Naturally, he tries to channel the Zygarde, which backfires horribly as the Zygarde overpowers him and decides to issue an ultimatum: either aid him in finding legendaries or die then and there. Accepting the offer, the channeler gets the Total Solitude brand so he can mentally communicate with only pokemon that he channels and "gains" having Zygarde permanently channeled to him, regardless of the normal restrictions. This also serves as a way Zygarde can continually keep tabs on him and remind him of his deal. Also slowly drive him insane, though that's mostly a side effect. This may seem like a terrible deal, and it kinda is supposed to be, but the channeler does get benefits from channeling Zygarde through his channeler features. Well, one of my PC's once made a deal with Giratina (who played more of a Fate role while Darkrai played the Devil) for more power in order to overcome the BBEG. Giratina agreed because the BBEG had found a way to escape dying and Giratina needed a hitman. Basically, he gained the Fate aura as a once-daily power (without the stat boosts, though) and, whenever Giratina/I wanted, Giratina/I could make him go crazy and try to kill the nearest thing to him (most often his own Pokemon). Cue Lavender Town theme music. So the upside was he got some cool powers. Downside was that he had to obey Giratina's orders (which cause difficulties sometimes) or he will go insane and start killing EVERYTHING. |

For a campaign I am about to do I made a character that comes from a long line of darkrai worshippers and every few generations (i.e. whenever Darkrai needs a sitcom to watch) darkrai brands someone from the generation so he has something to do. The Gm thinks this is a wonderful idea.

Please don't necro threads, especially if you're going to post a one line response without much detail or insight (your response also doesn't really answer the OP's question about what sorts of gifts to write). You can click the profile of the topic poster and see they haven't been on the forum for over two months. I'll just be locking this thread. |
