The multicolored bird is having a grand old time mimicking everyone's voice, and has been making quite a racket in the background with its imitation of voices and sounds. Unfortunately for Amber, the loud little bird is perched high upon a supply cupboard and out of hugging range. The other Pokemon at the entrance has mysteriously vanished, not that Amber could remember seeing it in the first place, leaving the currently present Pokemon sadly uncuddled.

"FILLIBUSTER!" a deep, baritone voice booms from the now open door of Prof. Willow's office. "Quiet down! Such a loud avian!" After his initial outburst, the Professor softened up again with a twinkling smile.
"Oh good! Hypatia told me everyone was here! How are you children this shining morning? It's a great day for research! Don't mind 'lil Buster over there, the genus Sermius Exulolus Rostrum occupies itself by imitating what it hears as both a method of aligning itself with its flock and natural vocal camouflage. A Braviary won't dare try to pluck a Hydreigon roosting in the treetops, after all! So curious how it does it, Sermius Exulolus like most other avians has interconnected air sacs instead of our much more human respiratory system, but the interesting thing is that this Pokemon has conscious control over its vocal folds in both control and shape! Yes, by directing blood to the vocal folds..." Professor Willow continues his lecture as he walks into the room about the finer points of vocal chords and why the bird is so special, becoming more complicated as he explains.

Slung underneath the man's arm was a thick, padded black case that looked quite heavy, like you could hit it with a wrecking ball and it wouldn't even dent. He hefts it up with one arm, slamming it powerfully on one of his tidy countertops with a bang like a gunshot, hardly even grunting as he furthers his lecture, know into the finer points of vocal variation induced by bunching the vocal reeds to attain different frequencies of vibration. His darker, clawed Pokemon that followed in behind him had climbed up onto the counter tops and was following his lead in undoing the clamps holding the case, staying close to the Professor and leering warily at everyone... save for Serenity. The little menacing Pokemon approached her and began to sniff her from an adjacent countertop, its claws extending and scraping threateningly into the slate repeatedly, putting deep gash marks into the stone.
...Although the Professor didn't seem to notice as he talked about bird calls.

"...and that's how we have the design of the musical note, but that's a lesson for another day, children!" Professor Willow proclaimed as he wrapped up his unnecessarily informative lecture about his specific species of bird. "But today, I have something to present to you! Behold!" Throwing the top of the case across the room haphazardly, Professor Willow proudly displays what he asked the children to come to his lab for. Within the case, protected carefully by black foam and smelling like new car, sat four electronic devices looking vaguely like cellphones and four Pokeballs.
"These beauties are the newest model in Modular PokeGear, the PDX6 Luna! They're water proof, fireproof, non-conductive and shock resistant, nearly indestructible!" He pulls one of the devices free like a giddy child on Christmas morning, tearing the foam in the case a little. As he boasts about the new brand of Pokedex, opening it up to show off the interface, he takes what looks like a SIM card and one of four charging batteries off the shelf and begins to fit it into the device.
"Designed with the modern Pokemon Trainer in mind, they have access to a fully networked database synced up to a regional provider, or my lab as I'll have you all know, giving you up-to-date information about Pokemon as I write my notes and apply Regional Dex changes! They're solar and kinetically powered, ensuring that you have battery even when without an electrical source, and they can be outfitted with the latest technology uploaded from The Dex's website! ...but those are a little expensive for my grant money, so I just got the standard package. When I finish loading your puppies up, you can scan Pokemon, keep up with the date and time to the nearest microsecond, use'em as point-to-point radios, and upload and manipulate data with the absolutely free starter's set of DataSoft Office! They can take maps and GPS and can even work as cellphones and MP3 players, but that costs money so you children'll have to buy that on your own, okay?"

Prof. Willow begins to scoop up all the techie devices and fit them with batteries and cards, speaking to the children as he does so.
"Now for the real treat! Inside each of those Pokeballs are your very own Pokemon caught from all over Soma! Had to call in a few favors and make a few promises, but I'm sure it'll all be worth it! Crack'em open and say good morning! I'll just be... over here... workin' on these... blasted things. Fillibuster! Fillibuster, fetch me the cordless drill!"
"*brrrrrrBrrrrrrrBRRRRRRRRRR!*"
"No no, you cheeky bird! An actual cordless drill!"
While the Professor argues back and forth with a bird possessed by a power tool, the Pokeballs call out to the children. On each different Premier Ball there is a name: Cassandra, Nina, Amber, and Stacy, written in permanent marker across the top of the white surface.

Stacy listens to the lecture attentively. He hasn't properly introduced himself yet, but interrupting a bona fide Pokemon Professor during his talk isn't that high on his to-do list. He's just very much distracted. It's not as if the trivia isn't interesting. After all, he's never even seen a Hydreigon before; this is knowledge the pokefan's got to keep up with.

But that case. As soon as it opened, his gaze started switching back and forth between trying to stay interested in the Professor's speech and trying to almost stare the Pokemon out of the ball with his name on it. It's such a good-looking model, too - even though the black permanent ink ruins the smooth white surface a bit.

It was no surprise that Stacy is the first to step forward when the Professor gave them the chance to. The Luna'd have to wait. He grabs his Pokeball, takes two steps to one side, and presses the button on the front. "Let's get this pyjama party started!"

Amber pays attention to the lecture, and at the same time was trying to maneuver to hugging position for the clawed thing. However, once the pokeballs appeared her attention darted from it to them.

"Ooh." Amber is right behind Stacey in grabbing her ball.
"Lets see our new friends." She nose presses the pokeball button.

When the Professor showed up Nina was relieved, but when he nonchalantly started to go into full lecture mode she was a bit irritated. Not that the information wasn't interesting in it's own way, but that wasn't why she had come here. After a few moments she started to space out on the lecture and instead watched the others. After all she was supposed to spend quite some time with them in the future. She knew Amber, she remembered Stacy and she couldn't quite put Pumpkin. The first two were nice, but also irritating in their drive for activity, especially Amber. Pumpkin also seemed nice and at least a bit more quiet, than the other two.
Nina was pulled out of her thoughts as the Professor began explaining the Pokédex to them. But involuntarily her eyes always wandered towards the four white balls inside the case. Especially towards the one with her name written on it. This, this was why she was here. She could feel herself getting nervous. Her parents had told her about their own adventures, how they had gotten their first Pokémon and became friends with them. What if her Pokémon couldn't stand her? What if it was as hyperactive as Amber? What if...

She was taken out of these thoughts as Stacy took the initiative and grabbed his Pokéball, Amber following right away. No use in getting anxious. She wouldn't find out anything without giving it a try. Slowly Nina walked up to the case and took the white ball with her name on it.
"Okay", she said, took one deep breath and released the Pokémon.

Serenity's loatheful glare sets the Weavile on edge, and it lowers its plumage and narrows its eyes, flattening its body in a threatening display of its own as the nurse towers over the clawed creature. It backs away and shrieks a cry of warning, giving off a sharp hiss and running its claws over each other. The sound of the shrill warning shout silences the Professor and his argumentative Chatot, and as the Dark Pokemon retreats it goes to kick the empty case of the table as everyone stares on.
"Hup!" grunts Professor Willow as his pudgy form moves at surprising speed to catch the case under one arm and prevent it from clattering to the floor. He also narrows his gaze at the Weavile.
"CURIE! COME HERE!" he booms in anger. The clawed Pokemon immediately stops what its doing, staring at the Professor like a Deerling in the headlights before scampering behind him in two powerful bounds. It stands flanking him in a pouncing stance, mewling dangerously in Serenity's direction.
"Now now, Cassandra, you shouldn't give this Pokemon an excuse to attack you. Weavile are quite feral even when trained, and those calcium composite claws are sharp enough to cut stone. It's less of a question of if she can write her initials in your rib cage, it's how quickly," he lectures cautiously. True to form, Professor Willow can't quite help himself and continues on to the finer points of what makes a Weavile so dangerous as the rest of the children excitedly crack open their Pokeballs for the first time.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Stacy's Pokeball bursts forth with what he recognizes to be a Wurmple, the Worm Pokemon. The spiky red Bug Pokemon is overjoyed to have been let out of its ball and becomes occupied with inspecting its immediate space in the form of crawling over every surface it can stick. Fillibuster begins to make interested sounds, eyeing the Bug Type carefully and flapping a little closer. The Wurmple, obviously notified of this, becomes frightened and seeks protection from the tallest living non-hostile thing in the room... which just so happens to be Stacy. By attempting to climb its way up the cuff of his pants.

When Amber presses her nose to her own Pokeball, something slightly unexpected happens. A flower materializes in her hair, green with a curling stem. At first that seems like all that will happen, as if someone played a practical joke on the poor girl and replaced her Pokeball with some strange flower-summoning device when an almost imperceptible, quiet whistle can be heard. Easy to miss, a Flabebe hangs off the stamen of the green plant and whistles once more, looking sleepy and a little lost as to what all is going on.

As Nina nervously opened her own Pokeball to discover what was inside, she would recognize a Pokemon that held a few of her favorite types within: the Ice and Water type, Spheal. A blue and tawny ball of fluff and fuzz materializes in front of Nina, blinking just a few times. It turns its round body slightly to get an eyeful of the room and everything that was going on. Seeing as the answer was "a lot", this pleased it, and the Clap Pokemon stayed true to its name and began to slap its fins together and bark happily. Of course, it followed this with rolling around in circles and banging into the counter more than once. It seems that Nina's prayers were not answered. Her Pokemon was nearly as hyperactive as Amber was.

"O-okay! Calm down!" Stacy was taken aback by the Wurmple's curiosity for a moment, but as the little silkworm starts frantically crawling up his leg, he quickly knows what to do. He bends down, grabbing the Pokemon with two hands (paying heed not to touch its spikes) and putting it safely on his left shoulder. "There. That a bit more comfortable for you? Less scared now? I ain't letting letting that bird touch you, don't worry."

While thinking of a name for the creature, Stacy catches a glimpse of Fillibuster approaching from the side. He quickly turns and points a finger, saying "Yeah, you heard me! Don't even think about it."

"Oh. Hello there little one." Amber smiles, remarkably calm1, holds one hand under the flower and gently pets the Flabebe with a finger. "You have such a pretty flower there." Amber thinks of names for this cute little one.

1 Despite every fiber of her being wanting to give it a hug

Nina watched half amused, half worried as the cute little ball of fur rolled around the lab. She knew that the soft fur and the the blubber made it unlikely the Spheal was hurting itself, but it did nonetheless looked like it hurt. Kind of cute, though. Nina squatted down and watched the pokémon, her pokémon, roll around some more. It certainly seemed lively. She would have to think of a name for the little guy. Preferably one that would still fit it after it evolved. But more importantly, she knew that Spheals were rare and that she would need a license to own one.
"Uh, Professor", she said hesitantly and turned to where the Professor was, "Do you... I mean... Do I need to get a license?"

Amber's Flabebe lets out another soft whistle at her gentle touch, its eyes narrowing as the calming sensation seems to be putting it to sleep, completely oblivious to loud conversations and Pokemon cries that are making the laboratory sound more like a zoo.

Reflexively, the panicked Wurmple wraps its spiny body around the backside of Stacy's neck like some kind of pointy ascot, sticking its spines outwards. It leaves a sticky, crawly sensation on his skin from its bristled and stringy feet. Fillibuster flaps a little closer, but outside of smacking range in case the Worm Pokemon's protector decided that he himself was tasty.
"Calm down! Don't worry, don't even think about it," it mocked in the boy's own voice, seemingly broadcasting a message of just let this happen.
"...and the hook shape is most efficient for tearing at another creature's jugular artery, cinching down to cut it like fishing line. Not to mention that those curved claws are ideal for pouncing and staying attached to much larger prey than itself, but I bet you already kne- Oh hush up, you!" Professor Willow outrages as he finishes his lecture, returning the noisy and troublesome bird to a lavender-colored Pokeball.
"And you too! Play nice!" The Professor digs his stubby fingers powerfully into the back of the Weavile's headdress, pushing down on the scalp behind its feathers. Shockingly, instead of clawing his eyes out and turning Professor Willow into chuck steak, the clawed Pokemon swipes uselessly at his arm above and behind it before her head is driven carefully down into the countertop, pacifying her as she lays flat and silent. The Professor sighs, adjusts his spectacles, and returns to his exuberant self once again.

"Well I think that's it!" he proclaims with fervor, "The batteries are all charged and hooked up, and your new PDX6 units have been initialized! As long as you expose them to sunlight every now and again and get some regular exercise with them on your person, you shouldn't have to charge them. But if you do, they take any USB or USB-Micro connector! Go ahead, give'em a try! ...Er, I'd hand them out to you youngsters, but I've sort of got my hands full here." The Professor, one hand on his Weavile and the other on a Pokeball carrying his talkative bird, waits for the group of new Pokemon Trainers to test out their devices as he continues on about them.
"Now that little machine works essentially as a form of government-sanctioned ID. I, as a government sponsored Pokemon Professor, can designate new Trainers and issue out Trainer Cards with specific levels and qualifications as I see fit... which have already been uploaded to your PDX's. You can get the carbon copy at any government validated establishment such as a police station, courthouse, DMV, and certain Pokemon Gyms for a $20 fee... but those cost more money that the electronic copy doesn't, and that's an extra hundred dollars that I can spend on skeletal models that... keep going missing for some reason. So to answer your question, Miss Faulkner! Yes, you already have a license as part of your Pokemon Trainer Card, although the police and Pokemon Gym Leaders may ask to see it from time to time and you will have to have it re-registered every three years," he explains informatively. During his speech, Stacy's Wurmple had decided to calm down seeing as the predator had gone and Nina's Spheal had taken to licking her hand more than what would be considered unreasonable, threatening to prune her pale skin on its rough tongue.

"Well I think that covers it!" he announces happily, taking his hand off of the Weavile, sufficiently calmed and back down to a generally non-combative state. "What you do from here is up to you children! Go experience the world, find yourselves, have fun! I remember way back when I was a Pokemon Trainer, I tell you those were the best years of my life, just me and my dear Hypatia on the open road going where the rivers twist and the wind blows! Ha ha ha ho ho!" the older gentleman laughs, wiping a subtle tear from his eye. He takes a moment to compose himself before speaking a little more.
"You're free to do as you choose, but most new Trainers tend to hunt for badges and new Pokemon. Down Splash Road a few miles is Lake Hydrus and on it the aquatic floating Hydrus City, where you can find the Hydrus City Gym. A good friend of mine, Dr. Reeder, is the Gym Leader over down that way as well as a fellow scientist. Should take you until sunset without a bike if you start walking now. As for interesting Pokemon? Now I wouldn't give this idea to just anyone, but you children seem more than capable, so I'll tell you. The old and abandoned Medical Foundry south of Placid Hills, around 45 minutes walk on through Chemical Road, has had some interesting Pokemon pop up within the past few months that I haven't gotten around to study just yet, could be worth your time. It's chained off by a combination lock, but the combo is 'pi', should get you in just fine."

Professor Willow straightens up and smiles a beaming smile.
"Well I think I've kept you children long enough! Go on, get on with you! Go on an adventure! Make sure you visit Hypatia at t- oh, where is my mind today? Make sure you visit Ms. Nightingale at Placid Hills High before you leave, she should have a nice treat for your special day." Each of you recognize Ms. Nightingale, she was very hard to miss. Miss Nightingale is the school counselor and psychologist, and more than a little strange. She's obviously foreign with her turquoise chadri and she speaks as if she's in the middle of learning the language. It's easy to see that she's smart but extremely quirky and strongly opinionated when it comes to the treatment of Pokemon. Even her body type is strange, being top heavy with the build of a stick... as far as anyone can tell from her all-concealing garments. It's rumored that she's a mystic, which is almost universally accepted as true.
"And one last thing, children..." Prof. Willow's voice gets particularly low and serious just then, suddenly becoming dour,
"Make sure that when night comes, you're indoors or well hidden. If you see any strange lights at night or any odd Pokemon at night, run. Fight if you have to, but get away anyway you can because they come in large numbers. Should you run into what I'm speaking about, and you'll know, you should contact me at the first safe opportunity."

"Hmm..." Amber processes all this information as she grabs a pokedex, and finishes thinking about the name for the Flabebe.
She nods, listening to every word, but not looking away from the Flabebe.

When Professor Willow stops talking. She places the Flabebe on her shoulder and runs up and hugs Professor Willow.
"Thank you! I won't forget to call." She also opens her arms to hug the Weaville.

Pokéball created by Sarah & Delirium of the ZNR
