It's a cool, breezy spring day this Thursday morning in Placid Hills. Even though the sun has just risen above the crest of the hilltops surrounding this community of fenced in yards and Homeowner's Associations, there's a certain tired electricity in the air. People are already up and moving about even this early, which comes as no surprise. Children of all ages are already on their way to classes, and even the little ones are toddling their way the few blocks to Placid Hills Elementary School. The mailman is making his routes depositing letters and magazines into mailboxes set before manicured lawns still damp from the morning dew. But not for four teenagers. They won't be heading to school today, or even heading to where their parent may need them at work for the day. Oh no, the mailman payed them a visit a week before with a very special letter from Prof. Willow, asking for their assistance on a special project that he'd discussed with their parents beforehand. The letter by and large asked for them to come to his laboratory this Thursday morning at their earliest convenience, leaving no mystery to what he'd have them do. Pokedexes and Pokemon he'd offer them, in exchange for their nimble and fervent youth free of responsibilities with the drive to explore and discover new Pokemon that an old man can no longer do for himself. A special day indeed, that these four wake to, with infinite possibilities. Where they go from here and how they go about it is in their own two hands, with fate resting squarely on their shoulders. "Let's see... Tool kit, check. Camping stuff's all in there. Did my hair nicely... wait, why again? I'm covering it anyway..." While on any other day Stacy'd be out the door by now, this morning was one of the rare moments to take things slow. After all, it's not often you get invited to start your very own adventure, even though he'd only been hoping to start one since just a few weeks or so. He's not any less prepared; he's been studying Pokémon trainers at the daycare vigorously in preparation (much to their chagrin), and if anything, he's better prepared than for anything he's done before. Heck, even his bags were packed multiple days in advance; he was only checking it now to be absolutely, completely sure. After double-checking for about the fifth time, he left his home and went underway. His parents were already at the daycare, so he already said his goodbyes the evening before. The rest of the night was spent finishing up a second Great Ball. Turns out, Al's advice was pretty much on point: making your own Poké Balls is a lot easier than it seems, not to mention cheap; and if his The letter he left at home. Woops. He panicked only for the smallest of minutes. It's not like he needed to bring that scrap of paper, right? Besides, Amber was invited, too. She can vouch for him. She mentioned that girl from the flower shop was coming too... was there anyone else? "Eh, I'll find out soon enough" he thinks to himself, excitedly walking the last few blocks. Resting in bed, listening to the world keep moving outside. It's surreal. Most mornings, she would get a niggling feeling that says; 'You should be amongst them' - but today, she doesn't belong out there in the crowd. Today, Serenity would be embarking on her own journey of self-discovery. Maybe you'll find a purpose out there in the big wide world... she thinks to herself. How nice would it be to find a a place to fit in and make friends... *THUMP* *THUMP* *THUMP* Serenity's parents, high-on-life as they always were, practically break-down her bedroom door. In the doorway is her cheerful love-bird parents, smiling as always. A cake in her mother's hands which reads; 'HAPPY *****DAY' - the letters which would've spelled 'BIRTH' have been plucked from atop the cake's baby-blue icing. "It's your big day, Honey! You're gonna get yourself a Pokemon!" her dad cheers, finishing with an overdramatic pose and an enthusiastic wink. Like a double act, her mother chimes in; "You'll finally have something to put all your effort into!". For a couple named 'Mr and Mrs Serenity', they are pretty loud people - always with a happy-go-lucky attitude. "Geez, you went the extra mile..." Serenity herself exclaims thankfully as she sits upright before sinking a few inches into a hunch and complaining; "I though we agreed you would stop busting into my room like this!" Normally, she'd pursue an apology but today Serenity has only one thing on her mind. "Mother, where did you put that letter?" "Forget the letter for a second, Cass, eat some cake!" Mrs Serenity hoists a thick slice from the tray and lays it down sideways on a plate in Mr Serenity's hands. "You could do with a little chub on your bones!" That name... 'Cass'... Short for 'Cassandra' always causes a tiny wince in her right eyebrow - but for her parents, she'll endure it. - - - A simple morning passes, and her parents show no grief. Serenity can't help but feel a lack of sincerity at the dining table as BLANKday cake is shared out. Shouldn't they be upset? Their only child leaves home today, possibly never to return, and they're smiling.... She smiles too, just enough to show them she's content. Morning progresses and it's time to leave. Dressed in a simple blue nurse's uniform, thin cardigan and black pumps, carrying a low-hanging messenger bag, Serenity steps out into the well-groomed front-yard. Her parents bunched together in the doorway watching her leave, speechless. It is only now, she realises how close they've been all morning. The two of them haven't stopped holding one-another. You'll regret it if you don't say goodbye properly.... She steps straight back into their arms and gives her parents one final hug before leaving; "It's okay Mom, you don't have to pretend your not upset, you know I don't like it when you pretend." - - - When she finally gets free of her home, Serenity's parents are left blubbering in the doorway, watching as their daughter leaves for her adventure. They know this is the best thing for you. Eyes forward Serenity, don't let the crying distract you... They hid it for your sake... Once beyond the threshold of her front-yard, Serenity doesn't take a second glance behind her; You may delay, Serenity, but time will not... Edited by PAE_The_Boss, Feb 5 2015, 08:09 PM.

Up at the crack of dawn, as usual, Amber is in her best outfit with her bags already packed. Of course, today she got up early for a reason, not to be the first one there or to water the garden, but to write dozens of happy little reminders on post it notes all through the house. 'Daddy don't forget to water the flowers' 'Daddy here's your lunch for today. Don't forget to eat every day! :)' Humming along, skipping, she goes through and puts notes like this everywhere. *cuckoo* *cuckoo* Dr Pine's alarm clock goes off and Amber runs up the stairs and tackles daddy as he sits up in bed. "Daddy I'll miss you so much!" "I'll miss you too hun." "Now Daddy, don't forget to water the flowers" "Yes Amber" "Also don't forget to eat every day" "Yes Amber" "And make sure to put on cl..." "Amber, you are going to be late. Get going, I'll be fine. Today's your big day! Go, go!" Amber hugs Dr Pine one last time. "I love you daddy." And before you know it, Amber is out of the front door, her bag in her hand trailing behind her. Amber going shouting, "Weeeeee! I'm so excited, I'm going on an adventure!" as she runs down the streets towards Dr. Willow's lab. Edited by Web_Metz, Mar 24 2015, 04:12 PM.

The light of the day begins to brighten as the town of Placid Hills springs to life, the shopkeepers turning their signs to OPEN in preparation for the trickling in of customers before the lunch rush, the sight of bookbags becoming all the more common as the local children march their way to class. Placid Hills was always such a dreamy town, ignorant of the rest of the world and the passing of time. Days seemed to drag by and pass in the blink of an eye, months could take forever until you looked back and suddenly they were gone. Professor Willow's lab stood hidden in the shade of cherryblossom trees but shouted out at the same time, a dashing of white and pink hiding the vast scientific wonders behind a lazy wave of petals ebbing and flowing like a stream with each gentle breeze. One could tell at a glance that they weren't natural to the otherwise green town because there was nothing quite like them, and even the cheery cherryblossoms contrasted themselves from the rest of the Prof.'s estate. Aside from the boxy squares of fertile soil that housed the remarkable trees the earth was sandy and barren, dusting the base of the Professor Willow's laboratory. A sly glint from windows floor to ceiling called to those passing by, but the shadowy protections of the trees in the dawn hid the inner mechanisms from anyone beyond the sanded sidewalk. It was strangely utilitarian, yet a little flashy, as if to tell all who gazed upon the lab "Turn back, ye of closed minds. Here be discovery!" And while the rest of Placid Hills hustled about their average day, greatness lay within this monolith's grand doors. And yet one couldn't tell from the great, speckled beast of tan slumbering in the fenced-in enclosure. |

Today would be the day. As Nina sat at the breakfast table, she watched her parents. It seemed like they could barely keep their excitement in. Her two younger brothers on the other hand seemed to be pretty down. Nina had heard them arguing earlier, that it was unfair, that she was allowed to go on an adventure and they had to go to school. "Now, Sweetie", her Mother broke the silence, "Remember to take good care of you. And of your Pokémon. Remember to eat good and sleep dry. I don't want to hear that you caught a cold after just one week." "And don't run of with the first cute boy you meet", her father chimed in. Nina rolled her eyes, as her mother gave him a playful jab on the shoulder. "Don't tease your daughter. Besides, isn't that how we first met?" "That's exactly how we first met and that's exactly why I'm concerned." Nina gulped down the last bite of her breakfast and stood up. "Don't worry", she just said, as she took her plate to the kitchen sink. "But we do, Sweetie, that's our job." A slight smile made its way unto Nina's face. She took the big backpack, her parents had helped her pack it the day before, and turned to her family. "I'll miss you", she said, as she hugged her parents. Then she turned to her two little brothers. "Well, I won't miss your constant screaming. And pranks. And bursting into my room." For a moment they looked even more down than before, but then Nina smiled and tousled their hair with her hands. "Okay, maybe a little." That seemed to cheer them up. Again Nina smiled. Sometimes they were really troublesome, but in the end she loved them. "Goodybe everyone!" With these last words she turned and left her house. The day was looking good and even though she did not seem half as excited as her parents, inside of her she was. As she stood on the streets, she took her headphones out, plugged them in and started the music. Now to get to Prof. Willow's Lab. |

Serenity hangs back at the front gate of the estate, and watches as the cute girl approaches the estate's front door. She leans against gate itself. Dressed in blue and pink, it's hard to miss her. |

The doorbell makes a strange little chime, unlike most doorbells. This doorbell sounds off in a series of beeps that continues for quite some time, nearly a quarter of a minute, until a voice in familiar baritone sounds out desperately. "It'll be just a minute!" The sound of clomping footsteps can be heard stomping their way to the tall brass door, turning the knob and pulling it open all at once. In front of Amber is a man she recognizes all too well as Professor Willow, the man who works with her father from time to time. "Ah! Little Miss Pine, I was sure that your father would approve! How is he lately?" he booms, assuming everyone is filled in as he always does. Professor Willow is a quite remarkable man at quite a stature... a short one. He's barely half a head taller than Amber is, enough to see eye to eye, and it's unclear whether or not his wild, frazzled hair that stands on end with just a wizened touch of grey makes him look shorter or taller. His voice is deep with a rumbling quality, but doesn't intimidate when combined with his round, friendly face behind half-moon spectacles and thick, well-groomed beard as dark as pitch. While short, he's rather stocky and well-built but with a noticeable gut. He manages to pull off the look with a periwinkle checkered formal short tucked into grey slacks with scuffed wingtips, displayed behind an open labcoat with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows. Many people are familiar with Professor Willow and his work advancing knowledge of Pokémon anatomy and physiology, and even those that don't understand on a scientific level know that his name brings a certain level of fame and pride to the town of Placid Hills. Amber of course recognizes him as the kind older gent that works closely with her father, stopping over for dinner nearly once a week to talk shop as their respective lines of work often intersect. Serenity would recognize him as one of her more frequent guest teachers, as he is the resident expert over medical treatment and recovery procedures, especially the sympathetic nervous system, bone fractures, and ligament tearing, although his lectures normally go far above everyone's head. Stacy would remember him visiting the day care infrequently, oftentimes to drop off an egg for his pet project of the month, and especially around 6 months ago when he was studying the maturation process of a Scatterbug to a Vivillon and the impact of different controlled factors on their wing patterns. Sometimes he has odd jobs for Stacy, but those are few and far between. Nina knows Professor Willow the least closely, as she's had the least interaction with him. Her involvement with him has normally been a passing 'hello' in which he'll try, often unsuccessfully, to strike up a casual conversation as he does with everyone. All would recognize him as a man fully committed to furthering scientific thought, one who likes to ramble over the subject any chance he gets and jumps to the conclusion that everyone else must understand what he's talking about even as his topics get more complex. He's known for being kind, welcoming, warm, and talkative, with a penchant for jumping straight to conclusions... but no one questions him because he tends to be correct 99% of the time. "Cassandra!" the scientific fellow calls out from his doorstep with a wave, "You won't make any new friends by hanging around by yourself! Come in! Come in!" Professor Willow ushers the two inside, not so much worrying about the children who had yet to arrive. He had an open door policy and assumed that those who knew him were aware. The interior of Prof. Willow's lab is spotless but has a worn out feeling. The tiled floor is faded just like the countertops, and some of the glass from his vials and beakers is scorched or chipped or otherwise marked, not to mention that the chrome from his instruments have lost their sheen, but it all has a homely feel. The structure consists of a few different rooms for various tasks: surgery, pharmacology, a more experimental-type room with more tools than normal, a data lab, and in the very back is well-furnished office with varnished cedar, comfy leather chairs, papers and carpet. The whole place feels like a cross between a hospital and a high-school science lab. Absentmindedly, Prof. Willow retreats to his office and shuts the door, again assuming that everyone was as filled-in on what he was thinking as he was. Two Pokémon are present throughout the lab, a dark black little clawed thing that's been following the old professor around cautiously and a multi-colored bird fluttering about imitating the sound of clinking metal on glass. The bird remains to watch, spontaneously crowing and mimicking the sound of Prof. Willow's footsteps flawlessly. |

As Nina came around the corner the Lab of Prof. Willow came in her sight, as did two other teenagers just entering the compound. Was she too late? Well, there was no use in starting to hurry now, so Nina kept her pace and arrived shortly after at the cherryblossom trees. She had no real knowledge of the professor. She knew what he looked like, basically. She knew that he was researching pokémon and was therefore an important person in town, but apart from that - nothing. Her parents knew the professor, that she was sure of, but she never paid much attention. Not wanting to just burst into something she rang the bell and waited. |
