In the Gen 4 and 5 Pokemon games (not sure about 6), it will let you start a new save file, but if you don't erase your old one (via the Up Select B process), you cannot save your game. However, after you beat the Champion and enter the Hall of Fame, it forcibly saves your game. So what would happen if you started a new save file and got that far without saving? I consulted the Internet but no one seemed to know. One Saturday later, I did it for myself. Now I know: It will display you as entering the Hall of Fame; however, it will not save your game. There isn't an error message of any kind - it will proceed right to the credits. It will reload the title screen as normal, and your old save file will still be there, with no trace of your previous game. Essentially, it's as if nothing had happened. I know this is a bit of a "that's kinda obvious" moment, but I like to try things for myself. And there's probably at least 1 other person out there who's curious. (Actually, I KNOW there is. Were it not for that one friend of mine, I probably would not have done this.) ~~~ This test was conducted with Pokemon Pearl. It hasn't been tested on any of the other games, but it can be presumed the exact same thing will happen. (Of course, if someone here wants to test that on BW2, be my guest. However, I recommend you lean more towards defensive Pokemon, unless you really want to level-grind.) In order to make this happen, I had to play the entire game in one sitting. When I beat Cynthia, the game clocked me in at 15 hours, 14 minutes. Ending team data: ~Kaioken (Infernape) lv. 46 ~Bloodrose (Roserade) lv. 45 ~Woolsey (Kadabra) lv. 44 ~Beanie (Floatzel) lv. 46 ~Holly Ivy (Abomasnow) lv. 47 ~PALKIA (Palkia) lv. 48 (just a smidge off 49) On top of setting a few records for posterity (beating Pearl in 1 sitting, really?), it's also the lowest-leveled team I've used to beat a Pokemon game with, so there's that. For those of you who are just curious as to how my speed-run of Pearl went, click below! Spoiler: click to toggle

This kinda describes my life. Oh, and I forgot to mention - every time Infernape attacked, yelling "Kaio-KEN!!" was mandatory. |

"Kaio-Ken... Times twenty!!!" But seriously, I enjoyed the read and I have now learned something about the Pokemon games. I wonder how that QA test went? I'm betting a developer decided that a player might want to play a new Pokemon journey without wiping their old team, and decided to have it work this way to enable that. (Because otherwise, the save at the end of the game should wipe the old one - so they specifically disallow it if, I presume, the Trainer ID or Secret ID are different.) |

That might be part of it, though I know that DP and up have two save slots instead of one (Gen 3 might be the same, I'm not sure) in case of data failure, so it has a backup. That may be another part of the failsafe. I could totally see why someone would want to go on a Pokemon journey without erasing the old one, and accidentally forgetting (and rewriting) their old save file, though for some reason I doubt they'd want to play through the whole game in this way. But I guess that's what speedrunning is for, so maybe it's an incentive? Either way, this game was tiring, but fun. Performing this test on BW2 would all but confirm it does this for all the games, but I am totally not in the mood to do that any time soon (or ever, actually)

One could likely perform this test on an emulator using save states as that doesn't effect the game's .sav file. So I might do a playthrough of Emerald then report back on Gen 3 - one day. |

That's possible, yeah. However, I think the Hall of Fame save would overwrite the previous save file, because the "you can't save unless you erase the old file" mechanism wasn't introduced until Diamond & Pearl. It'd be probably more meaningful to test it on emulators of the other Gen 4 and 5 games, but if you want to try it in Emerald too, be my guest! |

I'm lazy so I might just use advance map and some script edits to give me unlimited rare candies and a warp to the elite 4, just to speed up the experiment. |
