One of my players is going for a "child genius" archetype, currently with an emphasis on archaeology. For reference, here is how I am dealing with TMs/HMs in my game: -Pokemon are innately energy beings (they take physical form to interact with the physical world for unknown reasons) and are stored as energy/data inside of a Pokeball -Pokemon are stored in Pokeballs instead of computers to prevent hacking/digitally changing Pokemon data without permission (May in fact be a Pokemon rights violation, unsure) -TMs and HMs are sanctioned by the Pokemon league, the only legal way to alter Pokemon data. TMs can be considered "single installation license" and can be purchased in stores while HMs are "unlimited licenses" and are generally rewards for continuing on your Pokemon Journey and exploring. (Gyms, hidden in special routes, etc.) -TMs and HMs can be "installed" at authorized Pokemon centers, or with expensive portable equipment not available to everyone (this is in contrast to cannon where you can use them at any time/any place.) Due to this player's position as a researcher, I allowed them to have a portable laptop instead of a Pokedex. The laptop connects directly to the Pokemon Professor shared research network, and it is from this network that data is eventually added to the Pokedex software. (Ergo, the player has access to experimental data that has not necessarily gone through the intense peer review process of Pokedex entries.) I also decided that the laptop could be used to apply TMs/HMs in the field. The player was interested in programming TMs/HMs, and I flat out told them that such design was very high level and not to expect to be able to do it for a long time. (Definitely not until this "arc" is almost over, to avoid overpowered TMs from being used early on.) However, I was considering creating some Features that could be used later in the game to create TMs/HMs-- might require that player to get several Move Tutor Features, since this would be a Move Tutor/Researcher combo. So! I wanted to ask, if you all were going to include very high level TM/HM creation how would you do it? Does my plan (to make prerequisites in Researcher and Move Tutor Features) sound alright? Any advice for someone who has not created a homebrew feature before? |
