Hey I'm looking to run a contest based campaign and was wondering how to do it. This is surprisingly class supported, but i'm looking for flavor ideas.

First off would be how to replicate the need to progress across the towns. I was thinking about of like a you move with the times the contest are going meaning you'd also move back at times.

Secondly what kind of region would support this. Tropical. Heavy urban?

Not really able to help you on the first part, but as for what kind of region? Basically any sort of well-off region that would have the extra resources available to fund flashy performances and light shows. A tropical-resort island chain would be something a little unorthodox and rather interesting. The style of region really depends on you, though, as long as you keep in mind that contests are in the entertainment industry, and usually on the expensive side if they're officially supported.

I was also wondering if there was any sort of idea for how i could create something like gyms.

I already have a recreation of the elite four in the form of a festival with 5 of them making it a 6 person contest, each of them being a style expert.

Maybe have contest halls with celebrities that everyone thinks is the best in town and they act like gym leaders

Well, you could have it be a little like seasons in sports or tv shows. They rarely run year round, instead repeating certain cycles. Perhaps the Contests are not running for a period of 2 months each year due to tropical weather becoming unforgiving? And why the players need to advance from one town to the next, well...this is only level 1 Contests, but the next Island houses Level 2, and since you already beat level 1, there is nothing more for you to get here.

So SinGin tht kind of idea is good, but from my experience as a gamer there is no achievement thing. It seems odd, but badges work because there symbols, and beautifll ones of that of accomplishing something. This can be more complex achievements since the ptu players are more then likely not 10-13, but that sense of acheivement still needs to exist somewhere somehow to give all your random battles meaning, and direction.

Or in this case all your spectacular show stopping performaces.

I like to have mine linked to the Ranger's Union. Sometime it is how the Union support itself in League-Territory.
Mind you, I have the Trainer's Leauges and the Ranger's Union be opposing influences, like competting companies.

They both try to fufill simular basic roles, so it makes sense they would compete. It's not a war by any means, (though it does make that Gen 1 theory more intriging), but they are quietly hostile.
Contest Halls sort of act like Gyms for the inactive/aspiring Rangers (off-duty, retired, rejected, too young etc.)

One thing you could do is give your Campaign a reality TV show feel: To participate in the league, one must complete challenges set out by the Judges, who reside in each region. These challenges aren't just related to competing in Pokemon Contests, but are meant to test the team's skill, grace, and bond with their Pokemon. For example, a Judge who favors Tough or Cool Pokemon may demand that the team successfully scale a mountain while making appeals. Another might award badges based on the team's performance in a film. Only trainers who can successfully complete these challenges to the Judges' satisfaction are awarded Ribbons needed to participate in the Grand Festival. Some of these judges can be talent coordinators in their own right, and part of the challenge might be to outdo them in an appeal.

One note though: Contest rules are one of the things being looked at right now, so they may change in the future.

Some examples, though.

Thespian Ribbon: Coordinators and their Pokemon are tasked with creating a play or movie, and are graded for their performance and ability to remain in character. Successful Appeals can boost the audience's reaction.

Wuxia Ribbon: Coordinators must engage in a high speed Appeal Battle against a skilled opponent. Bonus points for Wire Fu and Calling Your Attacks.

Incognito Ribbon: Coordinators must avoid being recognized while being hunted down by the judge's Ninja Paparazzi. To complicate things, they are also required to complete certain tasks that take place in very public places.

Legend Ribbon: The Coordinators must put on a display in honor of a particular regional festival or Legend. Things can get complicated if that Legend actually decides to respond!
