So, this came up recently in one of my games. Why is Musician set up so that you can't get any trainer combat abilities at level 3 unless you spent all of your starting features on it? Is it really that strong a class? An easy way to change this would be to cut out the rank 1 of the Musical Training feature, which makes sense, considering you already got your first rank from the class feature. Also, a player commented on the difference between the PTA and PTU channeler, where the PTU one doesn't have the ability to use a channeled pokémon's move. Is there any reason why this was removed? It seems to me that was the main draw to the class before. Edited by CruxAdder, Dec 18 2014, 02:32 AM.

Channeler: Type coverage was the big one. Giving a trainer the ability to grab moves from all over gave lots of type coverage. That is why most classes typically only give one or two types. |

Couldn't it have been turned into a master skill-level feature, though? The class seems rather empty without anything to work towards. Channeler's Reach is only slightly better than Focused Command, a general feature, and costs much more, because rather than skill edges it asks you to already have 4 channeler features. It just doesn't seem like the class can compete with the command-based support classes, and it doesn't exactly bring anything new to the table beyond the shared senses once you have the base class feature.

You'll get more utility as a Musician out of your AoE buffs than attacking directly, in my experience. It is never not useful to open a combat with Bardic Flair while everyone's grouped up, and War Song is a nice damage boost for quite some time. If you just want to use moves, though, Mt. Moon Blues gives you Sing and Supersonic the instant you take the class. They're not damage-dealing moves, but they're both very handy for wild battles. |

Well, the point is that generally core classes seem to all get their damaging moves once you have an adept level skill. It seems strange to me that musician asks for such a big investment. |

Core COMBAT classes get moves then. Musician isn't really a heavy combat class. Its more a bard than a fighter/warrior type. I'll point out example of Dancer who gets buffs and various others. Typically people aren't taking Musician to be a damaging class. Rogue also has a lot of requirements for moves. It needs Rogue, one of the move granting edges, versatility, and then it can take rogue's arsenal. Sure, you can get it early, but you've still spent three feats and some edges to do so. As for Channeler just pumping moves up until level 12 doesn't actually fix the issue. Having unlimited type coverage isn't changed just because you end up getting it later. And Channeler's Reach doesn't have the damage penalty and is cheaper to use. Plus typically you're going to be picking up features along the way in classes you nab so its more just a pick-up along the way. Four features seems like much, but you got a guaranteed 1 from the class, so you just need +3 features. Obviously if you just wanted +2 command actions and nothing else the general feature is better, but if you like channeler things then its a nice bonus. Channeling also gives you a lot of information that GM's aren't required to give you (though a lot do). It allows you to know moves, abilities, capabilities, etc. It can also target wild mon so its a decent way to know anything you want almost before you catch. Add to that the ability to communicate with Pokemon and its decent for an opening feat. Shared Senses is great for scouting. Nab a ghost mon to hit things like invisibility, phasing, stealth, etc and you can have a pokemon scout anywhere. Sure, anyone with a ghost can scout, but you can communicate with the mon and see things yourself. The ability to channel any pokemon means the one hour memory thing can also be great. Use it on Team Evil's mons and you can figure out a vague idea of what they were doing an hour ago. Channel Vision is heavily dependent on how many players you have in the party (or combo'd with the extra command action) and can really let you set up accurate attacks. Start with one doing auto-hit, others doing accurate moves, end with a nice big move that has subpar accuracy normally. Channel Strength is a great way to pass around buffs to the party. Someone tosses up a swords dance, now you just doubled the buffed mons. Shared Fate is a way to help deal with type weaknesses. Say you have a Scizor or something, being able to resist fire an extra step is nice. Or turning x2 hits into simple neutrals. Edited by Major, Dec 18 2014, 03:34 AM.

And yet Musician has three pokeballs to "Trainer Combat" where Athlete, which only has two, gets Strength and Block for much cheaper. The point isn't really damaging moves at this point, it's the fact that rank 3 musician talents can't be achieved at level three unless the class is invested on exclusively. And back to channeler, Channeler's Reach IS THE CAPSTONE. It's not supposed to be "something you pick up along the way". |

Borrow was way too powerful and versitile, even as a capstone. We decided we wanted to make channeler more poke support than combat as well. As for musician, what do you mean having to spend 4 features to get any combat stuff? You mean to say "Get a damaging Move?" Musician isn't going to be the big nuke class you are looking for, it is more support as others suggested. Also sing is an awesome early pickup, along with metal sound and screech Edited by zoofman, Dec 18 2014, 09:34 AM.

I feel I should point out that if you're not making all of your classes ones that boost your stats, your Trainer will not have stats as good as a Pokemon, which will hinder your use of damaging moves. It will not, however, hinder your use of status moves, so if you want to be a partial combatant then it's better to have moves like Sing and Screech, which will always be useful, than focusing on trying to do damage. |

Not really trying to plug my own stuff here, but if you're looking for a musician class meant for direct combat, I made a homebrew class called the Barbershop Quartet that might be more akin to what you're looking for. Yes, it is made for a group of four to take, but you could modify it for one person. |
