I'm in the process of working on a campaign I half-jokingly am referring to as "Dungeons and Dragonites." I'm taking the races from DnD and converting them into a PTU format. I am basing the general idea off a post I saw in a thread around here somewhere, but these are from scratch since I don't remember what thread it was in or who made it to begin with. Spoiler: click to toggle Just an idea I've been rolling around in my head for a while. |

I would strongly caution against giving trainers weaknesses. |

Any particular reason? I mean I figure it balances that if they have resistances they'd have some kind of weakness as well. And in the case of humans I just wasn't sure what kind of resistances to throw in there. I'm not 100% set on the current form of the idea though. I'm looking for ways to individualize them a bit more. Maybe things that push them into playing certain classes more often than not? |

I've toyed with something similar, and I think I may be able to offer up a few ideas. The way I had mine was that the skills weren't prerequisites for the race, but modified by the race you chose. Elves, for example, would start out with a bonus in Perception and Pokemon Education with drawbacks in Athletics and Command, for example. This would be separate from Background skills, of course. I also envisioned that depending on the race you took you would gain racial Edges, Abilities, or other boons depending on what you managed to choose. I never got this far, but going with Elves again you might start with Green Thumb regardless of prerequisites, Naturewalk (Forest), and an ability like Keen Eye or something. You also might want to outfit them with moves that make sense if you wished (like "Follow Me" for the Halfling or Flamethrower, Icy Wind, or Acid for a Dragonborn's breath weapon). I also thought of homebrewing some stuff in there as well, such as adapting material from other books to fit PTU. But that's just my idea. I find the concept rather interesting. Never thought of adjusting stats, though. |

Death happens often enough with Pokemon thanks to weaknesses. At the very least, one big attack that targets a weak point is almost certainly going to knock a player out. |

The big thing is I don't know if they should be features or edges. I think an edge that gives bonus edges or abilities(like your example with elves) should probably have a requirement to it. The way you put it, they could take Elf and get the bonus to a couple skills, then get even more via their Background and start with several skills at novice level. Then they'd get the bonus Green Thumb/Naturewalk(Forest) and such. Perhaps something like this: Spoiler: click to toggle I could see it looking like that maybe? With the negs to a skill and to the two combat stats, I'd feel better about not having skill requirements. |

I believe you aren't the first to have worked on the idea of races, and you probably won't be the last. Here are links to two people who have done some work on them, found in the Ideadrome. By DrStraightLord By The Black Glove Edited by Pandora, Dec 7 2014, 12:19 AM.

I've got to agree with what was said earlier: Trainers with Resistances at such early levels can be kinda crazy (it can be crazy at later levels too, but at least sometimes it feels justified, with Trainers having to work for it instead of getting it easily as it just being part of their core being). That said if you're not looking for this to be 100% perfectly balanced (which, not gonna lie, any game with as many options as a Pokemon game is just not going to consistently be), then this is pretty fair. Another idea over granting Resistances of a certain type might be granting them one of the Elemental Connection Edges (Maybe Dwarves would get Steel, Rock, or Ground Elemental Connection by default, Elves getting Fairy, Grass, or Bug, so on and so forth), or a free Weapon of Choice Edge of a certain variety that's laid out here. The former option still gives them the feeling of an affinity to a certain Type, and means that most members of said Race would more easily be able to go into classes involving said Element/Type (Stone Warrior, Earth Shaker, or Steelheart for Dwarves, or the respective Type Aces, as an example), but they're not shoehorned into them. Dear Arceus I hope what I'm typing out right now is coherent, it's not even 6AM and I'm already awake. Also, a prerequisite for being a Dwarf should be: Glorious Beard. Just saying. |

(gosh darn it can someone delete this second one? My net's been acting really stupid and sometimes it sends out 2+ messages instead of the one I intend)

I'm going to admit that in the version I was working on beforehand I didn't include adding type resistance or weakness. I was actually going race-by-race in the 4E player's book and transferring the racial bonuses they got there into something that made sense in PTU. For instance, this is what it had for Dwarves:
So for the ability scores I added +2 to Def & Sp.Def for Constitution and Wisdom, they got boosts in Focus and Survival for Dungeoneering and Endurance, Overland set to 5 by default, I gave them the Survivalist Terrain Features Sure-Footed (for Stand Your Ground) and Cave Dweller (for Low-Light vision), they could overcome the effects of Poison by rolling an unmodified d20 with a DC of 16 (for Cast Iron Stomach, but you could try something else, though), Encumbered Speed gave them the Power Boost Edge (might also want to add to Athletics), Weapon of Choice for using hammers, and Disciple's Deep Breaths for Dwarven Resilience. |
