I'm a new DM, both in PTU and in general, and I've started running my very first campaign a few weeks ago. So far we've only had one intro session (getting starters, getting used to characters, etc), and then one actual session. I had some issues when it came to NPCs, because the premise of my start is that all of age trainers are taken to the capital city of the region and given their first starters and such in this huge regional festival, and I realized I needed a LOT of 16 year old trainers. So now I have/am building NPC charts with lots of information to just roll random NPCs. I also have item charts (roll a d100 for a random pokeball type in a lotto in the main city, roll 1d20 to determine what a searching trainer finds in the quarry (dropped pokeballs, fossils, etc) Basically, I've just developing a huge folder full of nothing but themed excel charts to automate as much as I possibly can, as well as various cheat sheets for when to call skill checks, etc. And, obviously, PP's pokemon generator is a godsent. That being said, I'm a new GM, and this is just how I've sort of wiggled into figuring things out. I'm really curious how other DMs handle situations like new NPCs and such. Do you just wing it? What sort of charts and tools do you usually use in your sessions? Do you have any tips just in the sense of coming up with random things on the spot? |

I'm at lunch, so I can't give too detailed a response, but check out the Excel spreadsheet linked in my signature. It has a random Trainer generator that follows character creation rules and assigns them random personality and physical description tidbits. It should be able to handle making a ton of low-level Trainers for you. :3 |

Apologies, I somehow missed that this had gotten a response! The excel sheet you linked is fascinating! I'm definitely going to use it just for the sake of that metronome generator, haha. One of my characters managed a togepi starter, and it seems like I roll for that more often than just about anything else. x3 Thank you very much! |

I'm preparing for a campaign myself, and I've been using these to generate NPC appearances/personalities: http://www.seventhsanctum.com/generate.php?Genname=generalperson (Using the Anime appearances) http://misc.iwakuroleplay.com/generators/character_traits_and_quirks_generator.php (Generating a random character quirk to make them seem less... generated.) I'm going to check out the generator in your signature, too, Elemental Knight.
