See, this is why I like PTU so much. There are so many more dimensions to building a Pokemon partner than just maxing its two best stats. I'd actually thought of that SpAtk Mankey, but I felt my post was already too long. Seems like a fun alternative, problem is we're too early in the game to give them any high-powered TMs out of the box. A Modest nature is doable, as well as Egg Moves, but it will have to compete with the Modest Riolu we already have. I'm sure I can handle it. Dat ThunderMankey, though... if only our Martial Artist wasn't already planning an Electric/Fighting Pikachu/Raichu. Hmmm... It'll be easy enough to give the green Mankey some goodies because they'll absolutely catch it... I'm going to try giving the shiny one the less straightforward set, since it'll be less of a loss to them to miss the more "Imma Mankey Imma punch stuff" one. The joys of having a Mentor. Yeah, maybe make Greenie Modest and give Meditate and Counter/Foresight, and give... I'm feelin' Beat Up and either Revenge or Reversal... to one of the "regular" Mankey and have him have a strong personality. Like he's the leader or something. Make him endearing to them because he's spunky. My guys have been responding pretty well to personable Pokemon encounters, and I'm rather good at them, if I do say so myself. Axew was infatuated with our MA's Scraggy (Scott is one hot piece of Dragon Egg group, and a bad boy to boot!), Sableye and Mawile were a Bonnie and Clyde situation, I'm plotting a lazy-ass Mudkip that knows Slack Off and will be a willful trouble child for our Mentor, and in that same swampy area I've got a Croagunk that's going to harass them and provoke wild Pokemon to attacking them by firing Poison Stings and ducking. I almost feel like I have too much fun making these guys d: EDIT: Ooh! Not sure if Overkill, but I could give each of the four Mankey something different, and then the two players have a range to pick from. Make, say, Grappler Mankey, Mischief Mankey, Brutal Leader Mankey I mentioned, and Green Wise Mankey I mentioned. Each one has a different fighting style in their little gang. Hopefully the encounter doesn't breeze by before that can be showcased... Just need to make sure Brutal Leader does his thing, at least. Edited by Zweilous, Dec 4 2014, 11:01 AM.

If you have a group with a personality, you may want to go ahead and say that those Mankey are under the effects of an Order - say, Brutal Training? - at least for the duration of the encounter. This makes them more dangerous than the typical Mankey and share some similar play style. If you ever intend to run something like the Squirtle Squad, putting them all under Orders (as if a Trainer had Trained them that day with those Orders) would be pretty fun. Don't know that you need it for this, but hey, it's an option. EDIT: Just remember that that bonus lasts until you catch them. And no, even if you catch the leader he can't put your dudes under Brutal Training again (unless a Brutal Training-having Trainer picks him up and just fluffs his own orders like that). Actually, before you wrote that, I was considering having them used to be escaped from some travelling show. That's why they have such specific egg moves, and it gives me an excuse to give them color-coded anklets to further indicate that they're each unique. They've passed by that spot before and wisely chosen to come back prepared, so it'll be easy as banana cream pie to have a grumpy, well-dressed-yet-frumpled NPC come through town asking people to help him find his escaped stars. "And as a reward... well, honestly, I'm of a mind ta let ya keep 'em. More trouble than they're worth, I just don't want the Jennies on me for havin' 'em run loose." That way they have a chance to observe them in action, plus the difficulty of having to capture all four, but as a reward they get to see for sure what each one has after the encounter. Makes the whole thing more memorable, and it's a good opportunity to give out some coveted Trainer exp for completing a sidequest. |

I'm glad you're getting inspired! And yeah, Pokemon Tabletop is awesome for being able to play Pokemon in just a totally different way, with a totally different goal - you don't need to go for maximum power, but even if you do, that means something different than it does in the games. As for Mareep... That's a little harder to do totally different builds with, just at a glance.
...just off the top of my head. |

One thing to keep in mind is to not get too fixated on making specifically built mon; your players could have something in mind that they want to try that requires a vanilla mon. Give them access to vitamins and TMs as necessary not just for shopping expeditions but as rewards. |

Fair point. I got carried away with thinking of things! But Lockdown's right, it's a good idea to not get carried away with it... ...But it's still fun to do sometimes. >.> |

Right, I'm more looking for ideas that I can suggest to them, because none of them have experience with the system and I'm certain most people wouldn't like to use the exact same Pokemon as someone else. Sometimes a special, obvious variant is called for (rolled up my first legit PTU-style shiny, a Water/Steel Shellder with a chrome shell- your Type-Shift Movelist Helper was most helpful), and other times they just need a nudge to get their gears turning. Maybe whoever gets the Green Mankey won't want a mixed attacker, but the equal attack stats from Modest create a picture that could spark some imagination, and Meditate and Foresight are handy for any Mankey build. |

As a former player in one of Elemental Knight's games, feel free as the DM to throw in a pokemon that you give a personality to that may not be on their wishlist. EK managed to get me in love with so many pokemon I normally do not like that I couldn't have them all on my team. That included a Trubbish that stumbled cutely. |

One of my players got a solo session, where she was kidnapped by a Drowzee. The Drowzee knows Teleport, and my player got really excited about it. Drowzee was not on her wish list, but Blinky has proven to be a good addition to her team. |

I was always annoyed while playing the games by how the nature name often bears little to no relation to the stats it impacts. However, having those names around is awesome, because it instantly gives a hook to start playing any arbitrary pokémon. Think about a Sassy Onix, or a Skittish Eevee. I find this a great tool as a player, but if you want to use it as a DM I could see it making battles more interesting. |
