I came up with a 5-member team to take on Hoenn in Omega Ruby (a team I will probably copy for Alpha Sapphire), and decided to name them in the order they were captured, and follow a certain pattern with them: Obliterator the Combusken Mangler the Poochyena Engulfer the Wingull Glitter the Ralts All I need is a Stunfisk, who I'll probably name... Amplifier or something like that. Gotta follow the pattern, after all... Can you figure it out? ;P |

I usually put entirely too much thought into nicknames that aren't, like, SUPER great. There are a few I like, though. For instance: There's Trap, the male glaceon. He's pretty and kinda girly. Also, he is a he. That is all. I also have Yggdrasil, the venasaur. Named after the World-Tree in norse mythology. Also, Yggie Jr., Yggdrasil's successor, bred and trained for the metagame. Then there's my Raichu, Sparky. I like this name because it seems so tame, but he's actually named for a very dirty joke I heard once as a kid, that I believe is usually told with a dog, with a rat with huge metal balls and no hind legs. That's pretty much it. Yep. I am not a creative man. |

I have what I've started to refer to as "Legacy Names", that I carry across various Pokémon that have remained on my teams over the years. I like to think that those Pokémon have reincarnated throughout my various play throughs and tabletops. Some examples are Aiden the Charizard Hayasa the Lucario Aegis the Gardevoir Kraid the Nidoking |

The two I'm most proud of are both for crawdaunts. CitizenSnips is my competitively bred one, and Ebirah is the one I caught as a Corphish and played through Omega Ruby with. |

My proudest name was the one that I named my Piplup. Because seeing the phrase, "You're in charge Napolean!" never ceased to make my day. |

DEREK I've played through Pokemon Yellow eight times. And every time, Pikachu would receive the name 'DEREK'. It was so ironically anticlimactic in the final battle against Asshat Oak (another traditional name) that I couldn't help but go with it. I was like 3 when that game came out. "Foe's Flareon is weak, get 'em, DEREK!" |

I figure I ought to add in my Alpha Sapphire -mons as well. Marche the Swampert: He thinks he's the leader of the team, but only cause he's Kayleigh's starter -mon. Named after the protagonist of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, cause those Mudkip cheeks look like his blush. Mable the Mightyena: Kayleigh's first catch, and a constant companion up until she actually took on the Elite 4. Spends time at home now, as Kayleigh's mom's partner Pokemon. Rhymes with Sable, a synonym for black, an animal, and a fur color/pattern in dogs. Tristan the Gardevoir: Caught as a Ralts, he and Rocket have been Kayleigh's Signature Pokemon the whole game. Team Leader and the first of her "Beautiful Bastards" sub-team. Went for a knightly sounding name, originally picking Wesley... thankfully, right before I hit OK, I realized that Sir Wesley was the dead husband of one of the ally characters in Dragon Age 2. Jackson the Pelipper: Taking the place of a useless Tailow, Jackson played the roll of secondary tank and staller for most of the game. Solo'd most of the Flying and Water Gyms just to show he could. Nicknamed after "Stonewall" Jackson. Harvey the Metagross: Not an official nickname, seeing as how he's the special shiny one you get from Steven. I headcanon that Kayleigh actually got it from her dad (who got it from Steven). He was the de-facto Pokemon used to catch others, seeing as he arrived on the team with Hold Back. Named for Harvey Birdman, Attorney At Law ("I'll take the case!"). Rocket the Plusle: Acting as the disabler, primary tank, and second member of the B-B sub team, Rocket wrecked basically everything in the game because nothing short of an Earthquake could drop him before he Confused, Paralyzed and Echo Voiced it down. Earned his name for never letting any Sharpedo use a single move during the entire game ("It's a torpedo? Well, you're a rocket! Blow it out of the WATER!"). Lucia the Ninetails: Joined the team right before the Elite 4, taking Mable's place. Hatched and quickly proceeded to burn everything everywhere, ever. Earned her name for solo'ing Sidney's team, sans the Sharpedo ("He thinks he knows darkness?? You're the Queen of Hellfire, Lucia! Scourge them for daring to challenge you!"). Lucia = Lucy/Lucifer. Shirley the Beedrill: Hatched her after reaching the Battle Resort. Named not for anything special ingame, but for a conversation I had with a friend when I mentioned I was breeding Weedles.
Casey the Loppuny: Hatched to join the B-B sub team. I actually had a Buneary already picked and set aside when I ended up trading one of my rejects for another Buneary, but a female in a Love Ball. Obviously, I had to re-breed to get a new one in such a ball! He's gorgeous and doesn't afraid of anything. And jegus christo, Mega Lopunny hits like a fluffy truck hauling cinderblocks. Kohaku the Delphox: 4th member of sub team B-B, and the only legacy name I reuse across games and versions. Would of stayed a Braixen if he wouldn't of lost out on better stats and the new Type.... sigh. |

I usually put too much thought and brain power into naming my pokemon. It usually also depends on what type of story I build inside my head. For instance, in one of my playthroughs in X&Y, I gave all of my pokemon names derived from Cooking Spices such as oregano, parsley, cinnamon, and so forth. I was building a character that wanted to be Chef so that's why xD |
